The 509th Fighter Squadron (later renamed as 509th Tactical Fighter Squadron) was established as a dive-bomber squadron in early 1943, trained under Third Air Force with A-24 Banshees. They converted to a P-39 Airacobra squadron in August and finally into a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter squadron in late 1943. The squadron was inactivated in 1992 as a result of the end of the Cold War and general reduction of USAFE forces afterward.
In Call of Duty: WWII, the player take control of 2nd Lt. Matthew Weber. Under Rover Joe's command, the squadron's orders are to protect a bomber squadron to assist the 1st Infantry Division in the level "Battle of the Bulge".
