Artillery is a Killstreak featured in Call of Duty: World at War and a Scorestreak in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty: World at War[]

In World at War, for five kills in a row, the artillery consists of roughly eight to ten artillery shells fired continuously on a section of the map.

Artillery is called in via radio, and is placed very accurately on a portion of the map. One of its major downsides is the time taken for the strike to enter the map and begin affecting players. However, the artillery is very powerful, and a large section of the map is rendered difficult to play in if artillery is called on it.

Artillery strikes are well known for their capabilities while being used in the Ground War game mode. When the type of game is War, using the artillery strike on the current flag location effectively prevents the enemy team from reaching the flag, allowing the user's team a quick and successful capture, as well as killing those who try to capture the flag. This however, is not as effective on maps such as Castle, Seelow, and Downfall, as some of the capture points have rooftops over the flags, and will not be as effective.

In Hardcore, Artillery also kills friendlies, but contrary to most other methods of Team Killing, it does not result in the player being kicked from the match if several friendlies are killed.

In any game mode, it is useful for stopping the enemy from reaching a certain area by creating a wall of explosions. The smoke and dust from the explosions is also quite difficult to see through.

The Tier 3 perk, Reconnaissance, allows the player to see the area the Artillery strike affects. This can be helpful in matches where there is an objective to get to, so you know to wait before attempting to go to it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War[]

The Artillery returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as a Scorestreak. It works identical to Lightning Strike in previous Black Ops games: players need to select 3 locations, then these locations will be shelled.

Artillery also appears as a Support item in Zombies, where it functions a bit differently. Instead of striking at 3 different locations as in Multiplayer, Artillery now will launch 3 strikes consecutively at the same location painted by the user.


Call of Duty: World at War[]

  • It is possible to see the shells trails from their launch site, if looking far outside the map. This is easier on darker maps such as Makin.
