"3 round burst pistol. High rate of fire with moderate recoil."
— Description.

The B23R (also referred to as Beretta 23R) is a three-round burst handgun featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Strike Team.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

Campaign[]

The B23R (referred to as B2023R and the Beretta 93R in the game files) can be selected in the customized loadout, and is also a part of the recommended loadout in "Achilles' Veil". It does not have any delay between bursts, unlike its multiplayer counterpart.

In the mission "Karma", if the player kills the guard who opens the weapons locker after searching for Chloe, he may drop a B23R with a semi-automatic firing function. This variant also has a different firing sound, which is noticeably lower than the sound of other firearms in the game.

Multiplayer[]

The B23R is the third pistol to be unlocked at level 19.

The B23R is a low-damage, moderate-range handgun, and it is arguably the weakest aspect of the weapon. At any range short of 11.25 meters, the B23R will deal 45 damage per bullet, needing three shots to kill. At any range between 11.25 meters and 22.5 meters, the B23R will deal 33 damage per bullet, needing four shots to kill. At any range between 22.5 meters and thirty meters, the B23R will deal 24 damage per bullet, needing five shots to kill. The B23R does nineteen damage per bullet at any range past thirty meters, needing six shots to kill. The B23R in Hardcore is a one shot kill up to 22.5 meters. Headshots do not deal any extra damage than shots to the body. The B23R's damage is poor for a handgun, as it can never get a two shot kill. However, the B23R's range is superior to that of the KAP-40, its main competition in the handgun category. The B23R has low penetration power.

The B23R's fire rate is excellent. It may fire in three round bursts, but the B23R's fire rate is fast within. The B23R fires the first two bullets within the burst at 1250 RPM, and the last bullet in the burst comes out at 937 RPM. The average fire rate within the burst is 1145 RPM. Thankfully, the burst delay on the B23R is not very large, and it allows for an overall rate of fire of 703 RPM. This output can be bested by the Five-Seven, but only if the user has an extremely proficient trigger finger with the Five-Seven. The B23R delivers its first three bullets extremely quickly, and any necessary follow-up bursts can be quickly delivered. Despite the B23R's lacking damage, the extreme in-burst fire rate allows the B23R to kill extremely quickly in CQC.

The B23R's accuracy is unremarkable. The iron sights are extremely clear and easy to use, although like other handguns, the slide will physically move while the player shoots, making tracking of aim somewhat more difficult. The B23R's recoil is tame for a handgun. The B23R kicks with recoil values of 35 to the left, 35 to the right, 55 upwards, and 10 downwards. This recoil per shot is average among handguns. The B23R has a poor centerspeed value of 1100. Although this is normal for a handgun, it is still poor overall. Combined with the B23R's high in-burst fire rate, recoil will accumulate somewhat, and the burst delay being shorter means the B23R has less time to settle between bursts.

The B23R's handling characteristics are good, as are to be expected for a handgun. The B23R allows users to move at 100% of the base movement speed, and strafe at 80% of the base movement speed. The B23R allows users to aim down the sight in a swift 125 milliseconds, and the B23R's hip-fire accuracy is average for a handgun, and good overall. The B23R's reload speeds are fast. The B23R's reload animation is 1.63 seconds long, or 1.8 seconds long if the magazine is empty. The user can Reload Cancel after 0.95 seconds. This reload speed is fantastic, and is only a hair slower than the Five-Seven for the fastest reload speed in the handgun category. The reload speed makes reloads painless, even if they are common.

The B23R's magazine capacity is tied for the second best among handguns, holding fifteen rounds per magazine, allowing for five bursts per magazine. The B23R can burn through its fifteen rounds surprisingly quickly, but such a magazine should be sufficient for one to two enemies at a time. The B23R's starting ammo loadout is fair, at sixty rounds. Although not sufficient for players looking to use the B23R for prolonged periods of time, it is enough when using the B23R in a strictly secondary weapon role.

The B23R has the standard assortment of attachments available for a handgun. The Reflex Sight is extremely unnecessary, seeing how the B23R's iron sights are clean as can be.

Extended Clip increases the B23R's magazine capacity to 21 rounds, allowing for an additional two bursts to be fired before needing to reload. The B23R's starting ammo loadout is also increased to 84 rounds. This attachment does make the B23R's reloads ten percent slower, but the B23R reloads so quickly that the difference is minimal. This attachment highly improves the B23R's sustained combat capability and is among the best attachments on offer. Conversely, Fast Mag is a poor attachment choice, as the reload speed is already a great strength of the B23R.

The Laser Sight makes the B23R's hip-fire spread 37.5% smaller, making hip-fire far more precise. This makes the B23R extremely accurate from the hip out to even close-medium ranges. The extreme precision will make the B23R harder to use in point-blank ranges, however, where such levels of precision are rarely needed.

The Long Barrel increases the B23R's range benchmarks by sixteen percent, increasing the likelihood of three, four, and five shot kills. The attachment is without penalty and provides a nice benefit, so the user can never go wrong with picking this. The Suppressor reduces muzzle flash, makes the B23R quieter when firing, and it prevents the B23R from revealing the user's position on radar when firing the B23R, at the expense of the B23R's range benchmarks being made ten percent shorter. The range penalty is minimal on a weapon that is not very reliant on range to begin with. The Suppressor will also reduce the B23R's centerspeed to 1078, but this change is minimal.

FMJ increases the B23R's penetration power and damage dealt to scorestreaks. The attachment doesn't hurt to use, but the B23R isn't particularly well suited to shooting through walls or being used to destroy scorestreaks, so the attachment is situational at best and it is often best to ignore it.

The Tactical Knife highly improves the user's recovery speed from initiating a melee attack. On a melee-centric loadout, the Tactical Knife is a good choice should the user want a handgun to fall back on, and it never hurts to use the attachment.

Dual Wield provides two B23R's that can be fired simultaneously, highly increasing firepower. On top of the usual restrictions Dual Wield provides - those being the inability to be combined with other attachments and the inability to aim down the sights - several aspects of the B23R are worsened. The B23R's damage profile is also modified so that it never needs more than five shots to kill, but the imprecision of Dual Wield means that the user is rarely using the B23R in Dual Wield at ranges where this benefit actually helps. The B23R's three shot kill range is reduced to just a bit over six meters, making one burst kills much less common. Next, the B23R reloads much more slowly, with a reload cancel of 1.3 seconds with the attachment equipped. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, the B23R's hip-fire accuracy is significantly reduced, with the B23R's hip-fire spread being twice as big compared to a stock B23R in all situations, giving identical hip-fire accuracy to a pellet-firing shotgun. Dual Wield is an attachment with a severe number of weaknesses, but the power of two handguns at once is power that is alluring enough to some.

Overall, the B23R, despite coming with the seemingly unflattering oddity of three-round burst on a handgun, is an extremely popular handgun that proves to be easy to use. The B23R can deliver a three shot kill extremely quickly, and its combination of slick handling and close-quarters lethality make the B23R an extremely potent backup weapon that the user can use as a great compliment to a primary weapon that is inadequate at close range. The B23R's overall upside and ease of use also allows players to use the B23R as a standalone weapon to surprisingly good results despite its status as a secondary weapon. However, the B23R's lacking damage properties limit its upside to a degree, and the B23R has deceptively poor sustained fire capability despite its relatively large magazines for a handgun. The B23R's downsides as a handgun are slight and it is filled with upside. As a result, the B23R is among the most commonly used handguns in Multiplayer, and among the most common secondary weapons selected overall. It is very easy to add the B23R onto a class and see positive results, even without the addition of attachments, and even on a class setup that seemingly doesn't provide any help to the B23R.

The B23R is the first weapon tier on Gun Game. It is equipped with the Tactical Knife attachment. Because it comes equipped with a Tactical Knife, it is relatively common to see players who refuse to shoot the B23R and instead just use the Tactical Knife the entire game, constantly setting enemy players back.

Zombies[]

The B23R makes an appearance in every Zombies map excluding Bus Depot, Town, and Farm. In Nuketown Zombies, it is inside the green house. In TranZit, it is found on the ceiling of the Bus. In Die Rise, it is in the Trample Steam room. In Mob of the Dead, costing only 900 points instead of the usual 1000, it is found opposite one of the heads of Cerberus in the 'Broadway' cell block. In Buried, it is located on the right side of the gunsmith's wall. In Origins, it is found in the trench between 115 Generators 1 and 3 and costs 750.

It retains its 15-round magazine capacity, with 105 in reserve (120 rounds overall for 40 bursts). It is fairly powerful, particularly on lower rounds. The burst fire means that it will run out of ammo very quickly past round 10, making constant ammo purchases a necessity. However, it remains powerful until around round 20 and is especially effective with headshots. Because of its power for a good price, this gun is very useful if a player joins in the middle of a game as they can buy it immediately and still be able to do some damage if access to the Mystery Box is not available. In Origins, the B23R can be found in the Mystery Box with the Extended Clip attachment, with 24 rounds instead of 15, and 168 in reserve instead of 105.

When Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the B34R. It will become fully-automatic with 20-rounds per magazine and 180 rounds in reserve. It can be Pack-a-Punched multiple times like other weapons and can attain the Fast Mag attachment. However, it's not a good weapon to use after round 30, as it has a low headshot multiplier that Double Tap Root Beer can't fix and runs out of ammo extremely fast with its fast fire rate and low ammo supply. If the extended mags variant is upgraded, it gains a magazine with 30 rounds and 270 reserve ammunition but is still not recommended as other weapons are much stronger.
