The Barrett .50cal (sometimes referred to as M82) is a semi-automatic sniper rifle featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare & Modern Warfare Remastered[]

"Semi-automatic sniper rifle. Effective at long range."
— Weapon description

Campaign[]

The Barrett .50cal is first seen in "F.N.G." on the weapons rack, along with all the other weapons in-game and is unusable.

It is then seen again in "One Shot, One Kill", being used by Lieutenant Price who was accompanied by Captain MacMillan in an attempt to assassinate Imran Zakhaev. This Barrett .50cal is mounted on a bipod and cannot be picked up. It has a variable zoom feature, allowing the player to zero in on a target, using movement controls (on the Wii version the weapon is controlled with the control stick/nunchuck rather than the remote), since the player remains in prone position when wielding it. It also has unlimited ammo, very little recoil, and no scope sway. This is the only time that it is usable in the campaign.

Multiplayer[]

In multiplayer, the Barrett .50cal is unlocked at level 49 and is the last sniper rifle unlocked by normal means. Like all sniper rifles, it can use an ACOG Scope attachment. It is tied with the Dragunov, S-Tac Aggressor and R700 without Stopping Power, able to kill in one hit if shooting in the chest, neck, or head. With Stopping Power, its one hit kill range expands to include the stomach. It has the highest penetration of any weapon in multiplayer.

The Barrett .50cal has a generous 10 round magazine, more than sufficient for most engagements. The Barrett .50cal also has a generous amount of reserve ammunition, making Bandolier less necessary.

However, the Barrett .50cal also has a few disadvantages. It has very high recoil, but it always travels in the same direction, and the reticle quickly resets back on the initial point of aim. A good way to compensate for its high recoil is to treat it as a bolt-action rifle, and only fire when it has returned to its original position.

Another disadvantage is the fact that the rifle itself is so long it often protrudes out of cover, giving the player's position away. Its firing sound is loud and distinctive and can give away the user's position in Hardcore. Because of its very high damage, firing rapidly with this gun is not usually necessary, although it can be used as a last-resort in close quarters. The Barrett .50cal has an unusually high fire cap of 1200 RPM. Unlike pistols, which had their rate of fire nerfed in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, the Barrett .50cal retains this rate of fire in the remastered version.

The Barrett .50cal is a relatively sluggish weapon for a sniper rifle, with poor raise/drop times and a slow reload speed with poor reload cancelling.

Equipping the ACOG Scope decreases ADS time and also decreases ADS magnification, making it more suitable for close range sniping. However, it increases sway and breath cannot be steadied. Together with the reduced zoom, equipping the ACOG sight makes the Barrett less suitable for long-range combat.

Weapon Attachments[]

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

The Barrett .50cal is relatively unchanged from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with the exceptions of new attachments, a redesigned scope, widened muzzle brake, and lack of a front iron sight. The only notable change from Call of Duty 4 depiction of the Barret found in the missions, "Of Their Own Accord" (although it is mounted with a thermal scope and variable zoom) and "Loose Ends" (as a portable variant). The only major differences from campaign to multiplayer are that the Barrett .50cal has a lower, more realistic level of recoil and a fairly low firecap in the campaign.

Exclusive to the remastered version, the Barrett .50cal plays an important role in the achievement Clown in Training, as it is required to snipe all of the hidden clowns in S.S.D.D..

Special Ops[]

In Special Ops, the Barrett .50cal is found in "Sniper Fi", "Estate Takedown", and "Armor Piercing". The Barrett .50cal is a good weapon to use against Juggernauts, as it takes three headshots, six chest shots or eight body shots to kill one.

Multiplayer[]

The Barrett .50cal is unlocked at Level 3 as part of the "Scout Sniper" default class.

The Barrett .50cal is a high damage sniper rifle. The Barrett .50 Cal does seventy damage per bullet at all ranges, 98 damage per bullet when using Stopping Power, or fifty damage per bullet if using the Silencer and not using Stopping Power. If using both the Silencer and Stopping Power, the Barrett .50cal still deals seventy damage per bullet by default. The Barrett .50cal does fifty percent extra damage on a shot that hits the head, neck, or upper torso of an enemy. If the Barrett .50cal is doing seventy damage per bullet, this will be sufficient to secure a one shot kill. The Barrett .50cal also does ten percent extra damage on a shot that hits the enemy's lower torso. This is not enough to get a one shot kill when not using Stopping Power, but it is enough to secure a one shot kill when using Stopping Power. If using the Silencer without Stopping Power on the Barrett .50cal, a one shot kill is not possible in Core game types. This one shot kill area is tied with the Intervention for the biggest one shot kill area of any sniper rifle, allowing players to score plenty of one shot kills. The Barrett .50cal also has high penetration power, allowing the Barrett .50cal to retain most of its damage when shooting through walls. If using Stopping Power and shooting through walls, there is a fair margin for error in securing a one shot kill through a wall if the bullet strikes the head, neck, or upper torso.

The Barrett .50cal is semi-automatic and has no firecap, allowing the user to fire as fast as they please. This allows users to fire the weapon extremely quickly if they so choose, but the Barrett .50cal's recoil will highly discourage firing the weapon rapidly and instead encourage manual pacing of shots.

Accuracy is the biggest concern when using the Barrett .50cal. The Barrett .50cal gets a standard scope to view the battlefield with, which is perfectly adequate. The Barrett .50cal's recoil is very heavy and consistent. On every shot, the Barrett .50cal kicks up and to the right with varying but very high intensity. The Barrett .50cal kicks up with a value of 80 or 95, and to the right with a value of 80 or 95. Even in the best case scenario, the Barrett .50cal will always have extremely heavy recoil. Oddly enough, the Barrett .50cal has the best centerspeed of any sniper rifle, at 1000. This allows the weapon to recenter quickly despite the severe recoil. Despite the good centerspeed value, firing fast enough will cause the recoil to completely max out. In most situations, the recoil will force the user to wait for the recoil to completely settle, often causing users to deliberately pace their fire for the sake of accuracy, causing Barrett .50cal users to often fire at slower rates compared to the M14 EBR and the WA2000. The Barrett .50cal has the standard amount of idle sway for a sniper rifle.

The Barrett .50cal has predictably awful handling characteristics. The Barrett .50cal allows users to surprisingly move at 100% of the base movement speed, but strafe at just forty percent of the base movement speed. The Barrett .50cal aims down the sight in a lethargic 400 milliseconds, and the hip-fire spread is huge. Although the hip-fire spread is enormous, the Barrett .50cal's combination of immense power and uncapped fire rate make it oddly capable in CQC should luck be on the user's side. The Barrett .50cal's reload speeds are the weapon's biggest weakness relative to other sniper rifles, as it reloads very slowly. The Barrett .50cal's reload animation is 3.9 seconds long, or 4.25 seconds long on an empty magazine. In either case, the user can Reload Cancel the weapon after 2.8 seconds. Even when properly reload cancelling, the Barrett .50cal has by far the worst reload speeds among all sniper rifles, and it is even more of a nuisance for those that do not properly reload cancel. Users must be very careful when reloading the Barrett .50cal because of this.

The Barrett .50cal's magazine capacity is another strength. It is tied with the M14 EBR for the largest magazine capacity in its class, holding ten rounds per magazine. The starting ammo loadout is also generous, at thirty rounds. This greatly aids the Barrett .50cal in several ways. As it is an extremely powerful sniper rifle on a per-shot basis, this can allow users to go for long periods of time without reloading should they be particularly efficient. It also allows users to panic-fire the weapon several times up close should they need to, giving surprisingly good odds of scoring a kill up close.

The Barrett .50cal has the standard assortment of sniper rifle attachments on offer. The Silencer makes the Barrett .50cal quieter when firing and prevents the Barrett .50cal from revealing the user's position on radar when firing, at the expense of the Barrett .50cal's base damage being reduced from 70 to 50. If using Stopping Power, the Barrett .50cal only loses the ability to get a one shot kill to the stomach. As a result, the Barrett .50cal is a decent choice among silenced sniper rifles for its blend of power and capacity when silenced. However, it struggles in comparison to the WA2000 in this role, which has the same one shot kill area when silenced, while also providing far easier recoil to manage. The Barrett .50cal is also outclassed when using the Silencer and not using Stopping Power, as the M14 EBR does a far better job in that respect, providing even better recoil control and much swifter reloads at virtually no expense. Whether or not the user picks Stopping Power, the other semi-automatic sniper rifles are better suited for silenced usage.

The Heartbeat Sensor provides portable radar on the side of the weapon that can indicate if there are enemies or teammates nearby. It doesn't hurt to use this attachment, but its utility really depends on the enemy's playstyle. It is much less useful if enemies are keeping their distance, and the attachment is a liability in the face of a Ninja user.

The ACOG Scope provides a short-range optical attachment that allows the user to retain peripheral vision when aiming, at the expense of the ability to hold breath to steady the weapon. As compensation for being unable to steady the idle sway, the weapon sways at half the speed compared to a stock Barrett .50cal. Unique to the Barrett .50cal is that the ACOG Scope speeds up the aim down sight time to 300 milliseconds. The Barrett .50cal provides a unique niche as a result of this faster aim speed. It is among the best sniper rifles to use with the ACOG Scope as a result, but it is still very much a polarizing attachment due to its inability to steady the idle sway completely.

The Thermal Scope is an excellent choice on the Barrett .50cal, illuminating enemies white hot. The attachment's only inherent weakness is that Cold-Blooded users are not illuminated, although the perk is rare enough that this will not be a common nuisance to the user.

FMJ increases the Barrett .50cal's already impressive penetration power even further. The Barrett .50cal is quite well-suited to abusing its great penetration power due to its larger magazines and extreme power, and FMJ further improves the odds of getting one shot kills through walls. However, those that do not choose to shoot through walls will not have any use for this attachment.

Extended Mags increases the Barrett .50cal's magazine capacity to fifteen rounds, and spreads the ammo loadout across two magazines instead of three. It provides more firepower immediately on tap while reducing the number of reloads the user will have to perform. The reload speed is one of the Barrett .50cal's only true weaknesses relative to other sniper rifles, and this attachment can easily alleviate reloading woes.

Overall, the Barrett .50cal is an extremely powerful and versatile sniper rifle. It has high power, good sustained combat capability, and access to semi-automatic fire. Not only do all three of these aspects make the Barrett .50cal a good overall sniper rifle, but they also combine to give the Barrett .50cal an odd fighting chance in CQC, something few other sniper rifles in Call of Duty can lay a claim to. There's only two truly poor elements to the Barrett .50cal holding it back: its recoil per shot and the reload speed. Users that get accustomed to dealing with the Barrett .50cal's weaknesses will enjoy the multitude of good performance characteristics the Barrett .50cal has on offer. The Barrett .50cal acts as a jack-of-all-trades sniper rifle, but at a very high level of performance all-around.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

"The Barrett .50cal provides the second fastest fire rate in its class. Along with a rapid re-center speed and a 10-round magazine, it's possible to tag multiple targets before reloading. Note that the recoil kicks hard outside of prone, so find a good perch and remain low for the best performance."
— Call of Duty: Elite description

The Barrett .50cal returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It appears in one of the default classes. It has a very similar look to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 version, but with a darker finish, new scope, and the bipod is now folded forward.

Campaign[]

The Barrett .50cal briefly appears in the mission "Blood Brothers" during the loading cutscene, when Yuri and Soap set up in their sniper nest. However, it is not used and is not seen again. It is replaced by the RSASS during the actual mission.

Multiplayer[]

The Barrett .50cal is available in level 2, through the Scout Sniper Default Class and is unlocked for Create-a-Class at level 4. It is very much like the variant in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, in which it is a one-hit-kill to the head, neck, chest and stomach. One change to the Barrett from previous titles is that it reduces the player's movement speed considerably; players carrying it will have the same movement speed of a Light Machine Gun. Because of this, the Speed Proficiency is recommended. Also, its recoil and sway are lower when prone or crouching.

It is a good idea to pair Sleight of Hand with this as it can greatly reduce the reloading time. However the 10 round magazine, semi-automatic firing mode, and large potential for a one-shot kill means the said perk is not mandatory.

It is also used in the Infected loadout "Knife vs Barrett", where it comes equipped with the Attachments with a Heartbeat Sensor and Extended Mags.

Special Ops[]

The Barrett .50cal is available for both Survival and Mission modes.

Mission Mode[]

The Barrett .50cal is used by the player providing overwatch in the Mission Mode challenge Invisible Threat. Several Barretts can also be found on the roof of the Stock Exchange in Flood the Market, to pick off enemies on the adjacent rooftops.

Survival Mode[]

The Barrett .50cal is unlocked at level 49 in Survival Mode, being the last sniper rifle to be unlocked. It costs $2000 from the Weapons Armory. It is one hit kill up until heavy troops armed with an AK-47 appear, so an automatic weapon should be switched out for the Barrett .50cal after the heavy troops appear. However, due to its high damage and firecap combined, if equipped with an ACOG Scope it is a very deadly battle rifle for a little longer than what's recommended of it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

"Semi-automatic, high caliber sniper rifle. Effective at long range."
— Description

Campaign[]

The Barrett .50cal appears in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, now called Barrett M82A1. It is part of the recommended loadout for the mission "Time and Fate", and scriptly used in the mission "Suffer With Me" where it is used by Frank Woods to shoot Mason. It can be unlocked for use in any mission once "Time and Fate" has been reached.

Zombies[]

"First manufactured towards the end of the 20th century, but a fine piece of weaponry by any measures."
Marlton Johnson, when obtaining the M82A1 from the Mystery Box in Die Rise.

The M82A1 is available in the Mystery Box in all maps except Origins. The weapon is rather weak, as it boasts very low accuracy, mediocre damage, barely manageable magazine capacity and ammo reserve, extremely high recoil, and a sniper scope by default (which can be a hindrance in close quarters, where most action will take place). With its poor traits, the Barrett M82A1 is a fairly inefficient weapon on later rounds, even though it is effective in early rounds.

When Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Macro Annihilator, and gains increased damage and ammo capacities, as well as a Variable Zoom scope. The Macro Annihilator also gains improved hip-fire accuracy, as if it were to have a laser sight. Ammo supply is still a problem for the Macro Annihilator as it has a paltry 49 rounds. Of the 3 sniper rifles, the Macho Annihilator is the worst as the DSR 50 has over double the reserve count with its iron sight attachment giving more peripheral vision while the SVU has buyable ammo.

Trivia[]

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare[]

  • The Barrett .50cal has an unused front sight, but when the ACOG sight is equipped, the front sight is removed.
  • The mounted version in "One Shot, One Kill" has two sets of bipod legs, one folded and one unfolded.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

  • The Barrett .50cal has a Mr. Yuk sticker on the lens cap although it can be difficult to see it at first (it is easiest to see when the player sprints). The player will not be able to see it if they have a different scope attached.
  • This gun has the serial number A0750319. This is most easily seen with Arctic Camouflage.
  • When zoomed in with the ACOG Scope, the player can see that the rear iron sight is marked for yards.
  • Strangely, the Barrett .50cal's scope in "Of Their Own Accord" looks the same as the regular scope, even though it uses a Thermal Scope.
    • This was corrected in the campaign remaster, as its third-person model now uses the Thermal Scope.
  • In Of Their Own Accord, the player can use the Barrett .50cal to shoot down enemy Mi-28s, but the bullet flight times and speed of enemy helicopters makes this very difficult to do.
  • There is a finger-print on the left side of the weapon, between the serial number and the left knob on the Iron Sights. This is easily seen when the Blue or Red Tiger Camouflages are applied.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

  • The Barrett uses the scope_overlay_m40a3 reticle from Call of Duty 4 in all singleplayer modes, but uses the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 generic reticle in multiplayer modes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops ll[]

Barrett M82A1 Woods BOII

The model used by Woods in "Suffer With Me"

  • In "Suffer With Me", the Barrett M82A1 used to snipe Alex Mason is called "M82A1 20x Variable Zoom". It has no idle sway, even though the "hold breath" prompt is still present.
    • Despite having a variable zoom, the weapon model is that of the standard scope version, as evidenced by the opened lens cap and the lack of a carrying handle.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered[]

  • The bipod is unfolded on the third person model as well as the HUD icon. Otherwise, it is completely absent from the first person model and the Create-a-Class weapon icon.
  • "CAL. 50", "MODEL M82A1", "SER. 2738" and "PAT. 269015: can be seen engraved on the left side of the weapon above the magazine
  • The fire selector is erroneously set to "SAFE".
