"Price and I are going on board. If we are captured, the Geneva Convention won't help us. There's little doubt that we will be executed as spies."
Sergeant Evans' notes

Plot[]

In October 1944, the Norwegian Resistance reported to the British that the German battleship Tirpitz was undergoing repairs in Norwegian waters, with the majority of its crew on leave in Tromsø and Håkøya. With a skeleton crew aboard the Tirpitz and the ship's defenses preoccupied with protecting it from the air, Captain Price's team from 3 Troop, 2 SAS was ordered to infiltrate and sabotage the ship by setting charges on its boilers, destroying its anti-air radar, and taking the ship's logbook to allow for British bombers to attack. They intercepted a small motorboat carrying officers to the Tirpitz from Tromsø, killed the officers, and used false paperwork and enemy uniforms to sneak aboard.

On the boat, Price throws the corpse of Captain Schmidt overboard, before ordering Sergeant Waters to stop the boat. He flashes a signal light towards the ship and sends a message, and then Waters takes the boat towards the ship. He briefs Sergeant Evans about the mission, saying that they will need to find the armory below deck and use the explosive charges located there to sabotage the boilers. Price, with the best grasp of German, would handle the talking, while Waters would guard the boat and be ready to make a quick getaway.

Price and Evans ascend a staircase onto the deck of the ship and have an exchange with the ship's captain, who asks for their papers. Upon being asked what happened to Schmidt, Price says that he was called to an urgent meeting with Admiral Karl Dönitz. With their papers checked, the pair are welcomed aboard. Price and Evans walk from the bow of the ship to the center, descending into the lower decks through an aircraft hangar towards the armory. At the armory, a guard asks to see Price's papers, then makes a call to headquarters after becoming suspicious. Fearing discovery, Price shoots both guards. Evans arms himself and grabs the charges, while Price holds down the armory area.

Evans sets a charge on each of the four boilers in the hallways, eliminating the German sailors who try to stop him. Upon circling back around to the armory, Evans discovers that Price has been killed. Continuing the mission alone, Evans fights his way back upstairs to the deck of the ship, killing the German sailors defending the bridge. Climbing the stairs, he destroys three pieces of anti-air radar equipment with his weapons and moves up to the bridge. Killing the captain, he takes his patrol log and descends back down to the deck. Pushing through the German opposition, Evans reaches Waters and the boat. Waters laments the death of Captain Price and drives the boat away to safety.

Trivia[]

Price false papers CoD1

Price's forged papers, showing a Kriegsmarine sailor with a distinct lack of mutton chops.

  • After Price kills the officer in the supply room, when looking closely at Price's "documents", they are clearly fake.
German sailor MP44 CoD1

The sailor at attention with his MP44.

  • The first sailor the player sees beside the captain who Price talks to has the only MP44 in the level. Neither this sailor nor his weapon can be found again.
  • The player can see until the very end of the border on this map, which appears as just black mass. To see it, go to the top most balconies over looking the rest of the ship when the player has to retrieve the logs for the ship and then look out in the open sea.
  • If the player uses cheats to give themselves weapons during the stealth sequence and alerts the Germans by firing, the game will crash. Furthermore, when the unarmed German sailors are alerted, they will pose as though they were carrying a weapon.
