Guzzo]], [[Nichols|Pvt. Nichols]], and [[Leroy Huxley|Pvt. Huxley]] to cross the river. As they were nearing the dock, the group began to take fire. Bower told Nichols to return fire and stood up in the boat to shoot at a few Germans standing on a balcony of a building in front of them. He was shot and he fell into the water. Guzzo tried to reach out of the boat to catch him or pull him back, but Bower sank before he could reach him.
