"A highly classified facility rumored to be developing various types of weaponry. Intel claims Shadow Company has recently taken control of Building 21."
DMZ Location Description

Building 21 is a map featured in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Call of Duty: Mobile, exclusive to the DMZ and DMZ: Recon modes. The map was first released on December 19th, 2022 as part of Season One Reloaded update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and was available for 24 hours. The map then became available on weekends for players who acquire a Building 21 Access Card. As of Season Six, the map has no time restrictions and is always available.

Overview[]

Set in the Defense Research Center, a match of Building 21 lasts 13 minutes with three exfil elevators opening at different times. Originally, only Shadow Company Armored Agents were featured in the map, but following the Season Five update, Konni Group Armored Agents were added into the map, who are hostile to Shadow Company Agents. When players spawn, they may be accompanied by a few Shadow Company Agents who will start out as friendly to players. However, if they are harmed in any way, they will turn hostile towards the offender.

The number of Konni and Shadow Company Agents both increase as the Protection Levels rise, as do their armor, from Alpha to Echo, when players are detected by security cameras or make noise. The security cameras can be destroyed. Velikan serves as the map's boss, using a RGL-80, when the Protection Level rises to Delta at around four minutes remaining in the match.

The map has several floors:

  • The garage level, which contains the server room needed to open the Armory.
  • The second floor, where a Buy Station can be found in the central plaza
  • The third floor, where a Wheelson guards the Armory, where the Weapon Case will always spawn.

In order to acquire the Weapons Case, players must wait for the 11-minute mark for the security locks to be released. They can then go to the server room on the bottom floor, where they can find a server that is lit up, and can be interacted with. Once the interaction is complete, players can head up to the top floor, where they can deal with the Wheelson and then unlock the Armory, where they can find the Weapon Case in one of the safes.

Extractions appear periodically through the match in the form of elevators scattered around the map (usually by possible player spawn points). Players can interact with them to start a thirty second countdown, and the doors close at five seconds.

At the end of the thirteen minutes, players will have four minutes to perform a Final Exfil. If all elevators were used during the initial 13 minutes, they will all re-open during this period. During the Final Exfil, elevators will have four Gas Masks ready for use on their floors.

Call of Duty: Mobile[]

In DMZ Recon, Building 21 has underwent several changes, including an overall brightness increase, and the ability to use a rough map of the building, though the minimap remains jammed.

A set of new extraction points was also added in the form of two hallways at the ends of the garage where players can also spawn. After activating a switch on the first floor or the map entering Security Level Echo, one of the two hallways extractions will activate, and require 240 seconds (or 4 minutes) to open a door into a smaller room. Inside, there is one more switch that must be activated to seal the room. After a thirty-second countdown, the doors will fully seal and any players inside will extract. After the initial set of doors open, the switch will reset.

Within the map, players will primarily find Atlas Corporation mercenaries and Kurohana Agents on the top floor, but no true boss, unlike Serpent Island. A Wheelson also patrols the upper floors, and it has the ability to fire grenades at players.

Unlike its original version, the Weapon Case is not inside of the Armory, but is instead in the Central Lab, which must be broken into with a special task. As such, the Armory no longer needs a special set of steps to open access, and will open up like other rooms after the security lockdown is bypassed.

The Central Lab task not only grants access to the Weapon Case but to a few high-tier weapons, loot items, and a Hazmat Suit that behaves like an infinite use Gas Mask and will protect the user against gas. However, this Hazmat Suit broadcasts the user's location on the rough map. After completing the task however, the C4 explosion used to crack the safe will cause the Central Lab to explode and prematurely spread gas around the map, and will immediately skip to the final security stage of Echo, immediately setting the timer to 10 minutes remaining to extract. The random garage extract will also activate, necessitating a four minute wait before it opens up.
