It was developed in conjunction with Black Ops 6, and is intended to directly follow up both the events of that game as well as Call of Duty: Black Ops II, its immediate chronological predecessor.
Despite Microsoft and Nintendo having signed a 10-year deal in 2023 to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo platforms[2], Black Ops 7 was not announced on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. The day after the reveal, Activision confirmed conversations about bringing the franchise to Nintendo Consoles were ongoing, but they had nothing to announce at the time.[3]
On June 26th, 2025 a message of the day was pushed to the Call of Duty app that included new images of Black Ops 7 Multiplayer gameplay as well as details on new game modes and features to be featured in the game. While intended only for participants of the play test, the message was pushed to all players on Xbox platforms as well.
