On November 6th 2015, Activision Blizzard announced the creation of Activision Blizzard Studios with the goal of developing a cinematic universe based on the Call of Duty franchise, including feature films and television adaptations.[1]
On April 5th, 2017, Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios, discussed the progress made towards that goal, with several scripts already written. Among the ideas were a film akin to the Black Ops series, another similarly to the Modern Warfare series, and a film somewhere in between. A TV series focused on World War II or the Vietnam War was also planned.[2]
The first film was originally planned to be released in 2018 or 2019.[3] However, it was announced that shooting would start in early 2018[2] but production was later moved to Spring 2019 with a potential release in 2020 or 2021.[4]
On February 13th, 2018, it was reported that the first Call of Duty film would be directed by Stefano Sollima from a script by Kieran Fitzgerald with Stacey Sher, Nick van Dyk, Bobby Kotick, and Coco Francini as producers.[5] On June 15th, 2018, Sollima mentioned that the film would be about a soldier: "I think it's more the idea, the concept to tell a story of a soldier. It's something you haven't seen a lot. There've been a lot of war movies but not soldier movies."[6]
On November 27th, 2018, it was reported that Joe Robert Cole was hired to write the script of the second film.[7]
On February 14th, 2020, Stefano Sollima stated during an interview that the "Call of Duty movies were no longer a priority for Activision", adding that the script for the first film was written by Scott Silver.[8]. Both Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk later left Activision Blizzard Studios in 2021.[9][10]
Current Progress[]
On September 2nd, 2025, Paramount Pictures and Activision officially announced having signed a deal to develop a Call of Duty film.[11] The deal was originally reported on August 29th, 2025[12]. It was later reported that Steven Spielberg had wanted to direct the film but Activision declined because Spielberg wanted full creative control over the production and marketing as well as the final cut of the film.[13]
Activision later sent out surveys to Call of Duty players, asking them which sub-franchise they believed the movie should adapt [14]. The options included Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Zombies, Not Black Ops or Modern Warfare (which could include the settings of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, or any of the games set in World War II), or a "new" Call of Duty story.
On October 30th, it was reported[15] that filmmakers Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg had signed on to work on the movie, with Sheridan and Berg having shared duties in co-producing and co-writing the film - and with Berg set to direct it.
