The sound of a challenge being completed in the Modern Warfare series

Challenges are in-game achievements attached to rewards that can be completed by the performance of general or specific tasks. Most challenges award a determined amount of XP upon completion, with some challenges awarding personalization such as a weapon camouflage or a calling card, or gameplay aspects such as weapon attachments. Some challenges are linear, such as weapon camouflage challenges, which are often completed for achieving a progressively larger number of a specific kill over tiers for a given weapon, such as headshots. Some challenges require the player to perform a specific task, such as killing an enemy by setting off an explosive by shooting it through a wall. Challenges have been present in every Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and change based on the mechanics available in each installment. Challenges were once exclusive to the multiplayers of the respective games, but have presently been utilized in the campaigns and other miscellaneous modes such as Zombies.
