During the development of Call of Duty games many things are cut during the process of development. These changes can range from weapons and characters to entire campaign missions and features.
Campaign[]
Original Campaign[]
According to Jason Schreier, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was originally an expansion for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and was intended to feature a new, smaller-scale single-player campaign, which was planned to be set in Mexico, along with new content for Modern Warfare II's Multiplayer.[1]
By Summer 2022, Activision decided to reboot the project entirely, tasking Sledgehammer Games with creating a fully-fledged sequel to Modern Warfare II that would feature a rebooted version of the original Modern Warfare trilogy antagonist Vladimir Makarov. The decision to increase the scope into a fully-fledged title reportedly left the studio's developers with sixteen months to develop the entire game. Treyarch, the lead developer behind the Black Ops series, was also tasked with creating a Zombies mode under short notice.[2]
Operation 627[]
According to former Sledgehammer Games Concept Artist Mingho Tong, in its early stage, the mission Operation 627 featured a recreation of the Gulag showers first seen in the mission The Gulag in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was later cut when the game was released.[3]
Additionally, the mission also had a different escape segment, where Prisoner 627 and Alpha Team would fight their way through the prison's gym to extract, instead of using the tunnel.[4]
Furthermore, instead of blowing up the door and making their way to Prisoner 627, Alpha Team was supposed to use a bolt cutter to cut open the door.[5]
Danger Close[]
In the mission preview image for Danger Close, the Gunship is in a normal vision mode while the in-game version is locked into thermal vision. This may suggest that the Gunship would've had changeable vision modes, similar to the Multiplayer Gunship.
