Damage is a shotgun-exclusive Weapon Proficiency in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Overview
It increases the damage of the weapon on which it is attached by 40%. This proficiency, although late to unlock, is highly recommended for all shotguns and is practically a necessity for the slower firing shotguns. For balance reasons, it is the only available for use with shotguns.
Damage cannot be unlocked through the Specialist Bonus with the Specialist Strike Package with any weapon; however, you can start off with a shotgun that has Damage as its proficiency.
Proficiency Debate
There has been debate on whether Damage or Range should be used for shotguns. The Proficiency is determined on the shotgun's own damage, range including fire mode. It is recommended to use Damage on the KSG-12, the SPAS-12 and the Model 1887, because they have a low fire rate and the damge along with the range is already good. Even at close range, only some pellets may hit an enemy and the player needs to wait for the next shot to be ready and that can be disastrous. But with Damage, less pellets are needed to kill someone at close or even medium range. The USAS-12, because of it's good range, damage and being fully-automatic, the player can choose to use Damage or Range.
Trivia
- Up until a recent hotfix, players were able to use Damage on any weapon via a glitch. This gave weapons like the M60E4 and MK14 a one shot kill ability to the stomach and up. Fourzerotwo, the creative strategist for Infinity Ward, tweeted out that a patch would be released to prevent players from exploiting this glitch, weeks before the patch was made public. He also stated that 'glitchers' would receive bans. Whether these bans are permanent or temporary is not specified.
- In effect, this proficiency is virtually identical to Stopping Power from previous Call of Duty titles, albeit only for shotguns.
