- For other reward based systems, see Streak.
Deathstreaks are a feature (similar to perks or killstreaks) in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The purpose is to give the player an extra advantage/buff to help them get a kill after dying several times without getting one. Their effectiveness is limited in order to discourage players from intentionally dying multiple times to activate them. They will activate upon each respawn the player has after the necessary number of deaths until a kill is scored. When the deathstreak is ended, the deathstreak perk remains in effect for the remainder of that life; after a respawn the player will not have the deathstreak active, but they can be reactivated later.
Deathstreaks available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]
Deaths Required |
Deathstreak | Description | Icon |
---|---|---|---|
3 | Painkiller | Allows the player to withstand 3 times more damage. Lasts for 10 seconds after spawning. | |
4 | Martyrdom | Drops a live grenade upon death. | |
4 | Copycat | Copies the class of the player's killer, which includes weapons and perks. | |
4 | Final Stand | Anything that would otherwise kill the player will instead down the player. While downed, the player can use their primary and secondary weapons and equipment. Players that are downed for 20 consecutive seconds without taking any damage stand up and are able to continue playing as normal. |
The number of deaths required for a particular deathstreak can be reduced by one when using the Hardline Pro Perk.

Trivia[]
- Suicides, deaths by teammates in Hardcore or penalty deaths (from ricochet damage or teamkilling) do not count towards deathstreaks. However, these deaths will end a killstreak (even though the player wasn't killed by an enemy).
- According to an official game guide, Dead Man's Hand deathstreak was originally supposed to appear in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but later removed from the final version.
- Originally, Copycat had a black cat as its picture, as seen in the official strategy guide, but was changed to the mask later in game development.
- Multiple deathstreaks can be found in the game code that were removed from the final version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Care Package (gives the player a care package on spawn), UAV (gives the player a UAV on spawn), Combat High (which was Painkiller in MW2) and Light Armor (which is now the Ballistic Vests pointstreak in MW3).
