Lately, I have been seeing a lot of descriptions for scorestreaks, maps and Extinction maps descriptions being copy and pasted from another site. With this comes multiple negatives:

  • Plagerism.
  • Sounding more like an advertisment then an actual description.
  • Usually shorter.

However, this does come with some positives:

  • Quicker and easier.
  • Can be quite descriptive.

What I'm basically saying is cracking down on copy and pasted descriptions, such as a addition to the MOS or another policy. We should also encourage users to write their own descriptions for pages.

Wikipedia (correct me if I'm wrong) doesn't allow plagerism with descriptions, then why should we?

Quick question, what's wrong with the "©" sign? And we do credit the source of the quote, so it's not plagerism. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 03:35, October 6, 2014 (UTC)

I'm not talking about quotes, but actual descriptions of maps and things being copy and pasted from the official Call of Duty website. Also, you make a good point about the "©" sign. Capt. Miller 11:28, October 6, 2014 (UTC)
We also have map descriptions from the game on our pages. As long as we cite the source it's not directly plagiarism. And most of the time the official description is the best description. If we were taking these from other websites I'd understand the issue, but since we cover Call of Duty stuff it would make sense for us to use the Call of Duty official descriptions. 11:43, October 6, 2014 (UTC)
Also, in response to "Wikipedia (correct me if I'm wrong) doesn't allow plagerism with descriptions, then why should we?"; COD:NOT#WIKIPEDIA. Wikipedia also allows users to remove warnings from their talk pages if they want. 11:45, October 6, 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, I see, but shouldn't all our descriptions be written by our users, not just copy and pasted? Capt. Miller 11:53, October 6, 2014 (UTC)
To my knowledge, the official descriptions are often very short, and are often placed as quotes. It's entirely possible to have a written description containing more detail alongside the official one. 13:47, October 6, 2014 (UTC)
I'm not talking about the quotes, but descriptions of maps and things as the actual descriptions. Like on the Extinction pages and the Favela page. Capt. Miller 00:03, October 7, 2014 (UTC)
I believe that the in-game or official description should be used. If anything needs to be done, then we might have to better source a few like the 2 examples you've provided. Otherwise, I think that it is fine to simply say "In-game/Official description". http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 01:37, October 7, 2014 (UTC)
It's still a similar point. Put the official one inside a quote template, then follow it up with a user written one. To be honest, right now we have too many map pages that are empty to start removing content from them. 08:56, October 7, 2014 (UTC)

Apart from the few times the descriptions do come off as pure advertising, I see nothing wrong with them if they don't cause any copyright issues. Sometimes the full excerpt is notable and contributes to the article (like the Favela example shown above), where longer ones can be cut down to one or two sentences and still cited. http://i.imgur.com/4XBy83R.pngAntiScootaTwotalk  01:45, October 7, 2014 (UTC)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the solution is just having better or more concise citations. http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif This username better work http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif 15:33, October 7, 2014 (UTC)

I think your right. I guess I was just blowing the descriptions out of proportion. They're just too far out and between to be a problem. Capt. Miller 03:40, October 8, 2014 (UTC)
personally, i think they should be left as is, and no user descriptions added for them. as sam said the offical ones are better. RisingSun2013 21:51, October 8, 2014 (UTC)
I think the official should be the primary one, and then I suppose a description, sort of what we have for campaign levels, can be added. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 02:27, October 9, 2014 (UTC)
Don't most maps already have a description like the campaign ones do? I don't recall a single MP map page that doesn't at least talk about the size, setting and terrain of the map in the intro. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 03:07, October 9, 2014 (UTC)
Well, I meant that greater detail could be given for a few maps. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 03:12, October 9, 2014 (UTC)

Closed - Due to the issue being too minimal to worry about, I'm closing the forum early. Nothing will be done at this point in time. Capt. Miller 04:51, October 13, 2014 (UTC)
