Hello fellow wikians! While on IRC I had a brainwave. Why don't we have a "On this day" feature on the main page? It would be similar to Wikipedia's (Which I did not get the idea from before COD:NOT gets brought up) except we draw the events from the Call of Duty Timeline and the Zombies Timeline. Unfortunately I'm not too good with coding and the like, so I'm unsure how it would actually work, but I'm confident that it shouldn't be too hard to good. Similar to "Did you know" it would be a good bit of trivia to put on the main page. I can understand concerns about a lack of events for the most bit. If the situation is serious enough that we don't have enough events for it be viable every day, we could do instead what happened in the space of, say ten days or a week. I discussed the idea with N7 and he seemed relatively positive on the idea. An accompanying picture could also be included.

So Call of Duty Wiki, what is your opinion?Personal AdvancedRookie Sig2 12:16, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

I think this is a good idea, I have made a sanbox that can be seen here. Iw5 cardicon soapN7 TC 12:25, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Because the timeline isn't that big, we should do them in the space of week. Otherwise, it's a good idea. - Spetsnaz Logo MW2 MLGISNOT4ME [Talk] - 12:54, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Very good idea, per all. TheDocRichtofen (Talk) 13:55, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Where would it go on the main page? Shotrocket6 (T/C/E) 14:00, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah... I'd be all for it normally, but... Does anything happen in months like December? Smuff[citation provided] 14:22, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

It's possible we may have to postpone it for short periods of time. However Smuff, events do happen in December.Personal AdvancedRookie Sig2 14:24, August 24, 2011 (UTC)
I think there's only one level iirc. Smuff[citation provided] 14:29, August 24, 2011 (UTC)
Timeline shows events in December in two different years.Personal AdvancedRookie Sig2 14:30, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Good Idea, but we are running out of room on the mainpage. Major Rank MarinesReznov115TalkTactical Nuke inventory icon MW2 17:34, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Meh. It sounds like a good idea, but the Zombies maps don't have exact dates. We can only say "This month in 1963..." for "Five" and Ascension- and those are the only two maps we can do. But, if we have room for it on the mainpage, add it. Personal Conqueror of all Zombies Ireland flagCoaZTalkPersonal Conqueror of all Zombies Ireland flag 17:43, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Just a reminder that there's probably not gonna be Zombie related stuff for it, mostly the things from WWII and Cold War. - Spetsnaz Logo MW2 MLGISNOT4ME [Talk] - 18:04, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Since it sounds stupid to me, would it include stuff that's in the future, like what happened in the Modern Warfare series? Just that it would sound silly that "On this day: Vladimir Makarov will die in 2016". - Spetsnaz Logo MW2 MLGISNOT4ME [Talk] - 18:04, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Yes we would. The CoD universe is different to ours, and therefore we can include events ahead of our time.Personal AdvancedRookie Sig2 18:07, August 24, 2011 (UTC)
But there isn't a specific day for the MW2 missions, just a month. How would we do those? Personal Conqueror of all Zombies Ireland flagCoaZTalkPersonal Conqueror of all Zombies Ireland flag 18:43, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

I LOVE IT! So, how can we do this...and pester the IW/3arc/etc. bosses to tell us the dates of events XD as well as birth dates of characters and birthdays of users...maybe? YELLOWLUCARIO TALK  18:41, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

I think this is a good Idea. In other words, <bigmacintosh> eeyup. </bigmacintosh> DJ-2Metlman TalkDJ-2 19:40, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

I agree that this is a great idea! It might need some fine tuning (maybe "In this week" in some instances), the idea is still a great concept. Great thinking! D_47 21:12, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Similar to what D_47 said, I think if we did On This Week instead of On This Day, due to the fact that on most days of the year, something hasn't happened in COD/Zombies/ Whatever. It is a good idea though. - marcus129 (Yeah sorry for no signature).

I'm confused as to why this is interesting in any way. We have enough trivia on the main page already with the Did you know? section. Also, there will be several days where nothing happened. So it'll just be blank or something? That doesn't look nice.

What's with the big gaping hole in the starting paragraph? If you don't know how it will work, why bother with advertising it to us? It's like advertising computer help, and not knowing anything about computers. Luckily I think I know of a way to do this automatically if we decide to go ahead with it.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  14:05, August 27, 2011 (UTC)

Excellent idea AR The Wikia Contributor T | C | E | Q04:46, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

Nice idea, but it's not feasible. There are simply not enough dates to make implementing it worthwhile, and especially considering that 1) the dates and events are fictional, thus should not be linked to our timeline and 2) many of them cross over with RL dates, which is not what the wiki recognises. --Scottie theNerd 09:26, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

Please note that it is not neccessarily every day, perhaps every week.Personal AdvancedRookie Sig2 16:14, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

As seen below on Smuff's oppose, the days when users became admins/crats, and user's birthday's can be displayed. If the user doesn't care, well that's not our fault but it can be cool for users that care. YELLOWLUCARIO TALK  16:37, August 29, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting neutral Neutral — I like the idea but we have so many unconfirmed dates I imagine it'd be difficult to get all of the required information to make it work. Carbonite 0 04:22, August 31, 2011 (UTC)

OpposeEdit

Pictogram voting oppose Strong Oppose — This idea doesn't work. It's really the only way I can put it - it doesn't work. There is not enough for us to write about every day and there will be days in which nothing happens. It's a very nice idea, and it may work on Wikipedia, but unfortunately it will not work here.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  13:12, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Strong Oppose — Per Callofduty4, DogNut327 13:18, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — Dates in the series have never really been specific. While I would like having it, there isn't 365 events that we could put for each day of the year involving the series. It just doesn't work. --DarkMetroid567 06:22, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — It's a nice idea, but I can't think of 365 levels that happen on a different day/51 levels that each happen in a different week. Sorry, but it's fundamentally flawed. Smuff[citation provided] 16:13, August 28, 2011 (UTC)

Smuff, we don't just have to include CoD events, the wiki events work too, such as yesterday's community event or when a major action occured like something PGB/TMOI (although that may be TOO cruel) that changed the wiki. YELLOWLUCARIO TALK  17:04, August 28, 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia's On This Day section doesn't go "2005: Added {{fact}} to every piece of information not directly sourced." now, does it? And before anyone brings up COD:NOT, it's not practical to do that either. Smuff[citation provided] 17:08, August 28, 2011 (UTC)
I meant MAJOR events, like when people got promoted on the wiki or when a major case happened (as per I said earlier like PGB/TMOI's banning) not what you said. YELLOWLUCARIO TALK  19:01, August 28, 2011 (UTC)
Advertising a persons ban on the front page is a bit much in my opinion. "On this day x user was banned indefinitely from the wiki." That's basically saying if you're infamous enough around here your name will be on the front page once a year. Carbonite 0 19:07, August 28, 2011 (UTC)
Can i haz two days for getting perm banned twice? -- CakeMixN7 nty 20:29, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Yes you can if we decide to do that. Also I want a day for getting permabanned ;)  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  23:55, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Yes you have a point there. Instead of that we can use like famous IW moments, like the court cases and DLC releases, same applies to Treyarch & co. YELLOWLUCARIO TALK  13:00, August 29, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — We'll struggle to have enough content to maintain even a weekly feature. Combining COD events with Wiki events pretty much defeats the purpose of having it, as there are even less wiki-related events that are worth re-featuring on the main page. --Scottie theNerd 09:13, August 30, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — Per all, I can't think of events on each day, or even week. Month would be a too large time gap, so I'm afraid this idea, as good as it is, would not work. - Spetsnaz Logo MW2 MLGISNOT4ME [Talk] - 11:15, August 31, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Strong Oppose — Both Modern Warfare games and Zombies game mode-the big draws of the series-don't have specific dates. I don't know many peopl who've even played anything before CoD4; why would they care about any of the other CoD games? Also, the idea of putting major events (like the PGB/TMOI incident) would make many users try to become like them. There also isn't very many CDWC events to put on this feature either ("The CDWC was founded on X day" and "The first CDWC event was held on X day" is all we'd have.) Pictogram voting oppose Weak Oppose — While a great idea, unfortunately the Call of Duty games gives us small spans of time, or very general timeframes, or no time at all. The Wikia Contributor T | C | E | Q15:42, September 5, 2011 (UTC)
