Forums: Index War Room A new way to Name PMG's
Forum logo

As Call of Duty includes numerous types of guns of all shapes and styles, with and without many attachments, it is natural that since this is the Call of Duty Wiki, people tend to upload Pimp My Gun images quite frequently. Of course, us members of COD:TIG need not to worry, we can quickly move them to the proper name, however, there are new issuea arising. At this point not only are people still naming images improperly, they are also leaving the generic "Myweapon(2)" as the name, for example. This, due to the long history of images uploaded, results in some 5 files of the same name, which causes many a problem. I propose a new of way of naming PMG images, first seen being used by User:JerryWiffleWaffle, which caught my attention as much and better and much more organized than what we are doing. They style follows this:

PMG_Initialsofusername_nameofgun.fileextension

In other words, say I have a gun called "M277 SAW". I would name my file

PMG_MB_M277 SAW.png, with MB standing for Major Blackout. If the username is 1 word or may share initials, use the first and last letters of the name eg. Azuris-->AS, or otherwise you something distinguishable Azuris-->Az

Practivcal, except why would we need the change??? what problems are u tlking about? clawdenxleave message here04:13, May 1, 2011 (UTC)

Users using the same default name that just replaces someone else's PMG (File:PMG Myweapon2.jpg File:PMG Myweapon (2).jpg File:PMG Myweapon(2).jpg). Master SergeantSgt. ChiafriendRifleman 00:12, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

Would it have to be exact initials? Or could I have 'Mr.E' instead of 'ME'. -- mr_expert talk 11:48, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — We have semi-automatic bots dedicated to renaming images in the manner we currently do; it would be a nightmare to change the bot's code to accommodate this and then go through every PMG on the wiki. I don't even want PMGs on the wiki at all, the last thing I want to do is clean up the shit [PMGs] other people leave behind. Smuff[citation provided] 11:55, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

I don't want PMG's either, but we certainly can't outlaw them. We wouldn't have to touch the stuff that happened before, only what's being uploaded now. What happened has happened. M4croppedBlackoutTalkAK-47 menu icon BO 13:39, May 2, 2011 (UTC)
Do you know how hard it would be to to make a bot that renames PMGs in the proposed format? Next to impossible. Since I;m the one who runs the bot that Smuff mentioned, I say Nay. Template:Signatures/Sactage 13:58, May 2, 2011 (UTC)
noone NEEDS this. more bad than good clawdenxleave message here 06:50, May 3, 2011 (UTC)
We don't need PMG images either, and we certainly can outlaw them. I see no reason why CODwiki has to be the host to countless images generated from a flash utility that allows a disproportionate number of combinations that users can create in triplicate. PMG has nothing to do with COD and I cannot see any argument in favour of keeping PMGs in the first place. --Scottie theNerd 14:47, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose OpposePMG_ is enough.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  13:11, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

But we would still have multiple files of generic or sometimes common names such as "PMG_M16A2", which would cause disruption and confusion, both of which are unnecassary. M4croppedBlackoutTalkAK-47 menu icon BO 13:39, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Strong Oppose — Per my above reasoning, nor would it be nessecary if we didn't possess bots. Template:Signatures/Sactage 13:58, May 2, 2011 (UTC)
