Forum logo

Abusefilter is an extension enabled on request at Wikia which heavily helps prevent vandalism and spam and logs who/what/when/where/why it throttled a user. Essentially, administrators can create "filters" which basically are rules of what should flag it, and what it should do. Here is an example of a filter: from Wook, it would disallow a new user (whose account is less than 4 days old) from blanking/removing most content from a mainspace article (unless they are redirecting the page). I think having this extension added would definitely help with the constant vandalism here and keep the wiki a lot cleaner.

See http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Special:AbuseFilter for more filters as examples.

Support/Comment It sounds like a good idea; I assume that in addition to giving the little auto-alert, it prevents the attempted action as well? This would be excellent for IPs; just make it impossible for them to blank pages to begin with, or completely block words like dick/cock/etc. in the mainspace. *APPENDED* Disregard my last. This looks to be an excellent tool. Ha, sweet jackass-autoblocking goodness. -- USMC-E3 Griever0311 United States Marine Corps 00:52, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

Support/question - Doubly so after seeing a what a recent newly registered user uploaded. Is it possible to make it so that newly registered users can't upload images for 1-2 weeks or something? Disregard that question, I just now noticed my answer on the SW wiki page.--WouldYouKindly 02:53, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

Support/question - In the last few hours, there has been more Vandalism than I ever saw! EVERY SECOND I see a Vandal! Btw, if I am not an admin, can I add a Vandalism Template to a user? If so, how? W567123daniel 02:58, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

@Daniel, Answer - That might be a better question for an admin's talk page, but yes, regular users can use the vandalism template (I used to do it all the time before I became an admin), simply type {{Vandalism|Page that was vandalized|Your sig}} on their talk page, and that'll put the vandalism warning template on their talk page. If they keep it up, just contact one of us on our talk pages as per usual.--WouldYouKindly 03:01, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

Support Sounds like a fantastic idea, and I don't see any problems. Especially with the mass vandalism that comes with popularity, this system sounds like a great idea. Full-fledged support. Corporal Juan José Rodriguez Reportin' for duty. 00:42, March 12, 2010 (UTC)

Support - We really could use a tool like this to auto-block unregistered users from editing. Personal WHISKEY35 sig 2 "Let your plans be black as night, then strike like a lightning bolt" - Sun Tsu 10:44, April 24, 2010 (UTC)

Weak Support - It does admittedly help, but it does take part of the administrators' jobs away. Almost like the Wikia welcome tool, it takes away the jobs of users who bother and want to welcome users personally. I really don't mind if it's instated, but we have been coping fine with vandals for a long time without it. So it questions whether it is really worth the effort to put it in.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  12:02, April 24, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Sounds like a good idea. I've never seen any outright vandalism on this wiki (I've seen it on others) but I've most certainly heard about it. Rambo362 16:41, April 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Sounds good we are gonna need to edit it and probably hold a vote on the conditions of what it would filter and block. But that would be a short few day vote and then within a month we would probably have it going. And yes while this would essentially take part of the administator's jobs away it would not take away all of their responsibilites and they cannot sit at their computers all day to fix vandalism but this filter can. They have lives and this would give the administrators a much deserved break as well as take away the large anti-vandal focus on this wiki while it is good that we work so hard to get rid of vandals and revert vandalism we need to remember what we try to protect from vandals and improve it. This is just a tool to stop vandals, give us all a peace of mind, and let us concentrate on what is important, the wiki.
