Hey, I come to you today to talk about an idea I brought up in chat last night, and then me and a few users discussed. I fell we should re-allow game "Tips" on the Wiki.

A current rule of COD:NOT is that we, as a Database on all information related to Call of Duty, are not a strategy guide, and I agree with this. We don't need whole pages dedicate pd to strategy, nor does each campaign mission need a walkthrough. Now that that's out of the way, let me explain what I mean by re-allowing tips.

The first thing is that minor tips could be organically implemented into articles. When discussing the layout of a Multiplayer map you could say "There is a tower to the south, it is ideal for sniping. It's stair case is also a choke point with only one entrance making it ideal for claymore placement as well". On a Zombie page you could say "This wide open area presents a good location to circle and train a zombie horde". Even for a campaign mission you could say "It is suggested you snipe at this point rather than rush on foot, especially on higher difficulties". I feel most readers would find this informative and helpful, even if it is a bit opinionated.

The second is we should re-introduce a tips section, similar to a trivia section, where users can easily add tips about any weapon, perk, map, mission, enemy, etc. for the benefit of the whole community. These sections would need to be regulated, which means more work for us, but I feel like it would benefit the community and give players who aren't particularly interested in the story or trivial information about Call of Duty to visit the wiki once again. Also, since these sections would be opinionated and not fact, we could have a disclaimer template reading "Warning: The following information is based on user generated opinion and is not fact. These tips may or may not work for you" with some kind of Call of Duty flare or quote (Maybe even from a newer game for once?!?). This is similar to what the Zelda Wiki does for Theory sections.

I know this will likely be a bit controversial because we are a wiki, a site for facts and not opinions. But I also feel like we have to remember what else we are, a community resource. We have a lot of information that's not relevant to your average player, and I feels like since Advanced Warfare is, shock of all shocks, looking like it could be a good game that actually re-invigorates the community, it's time we start adapting and changing to be an even better resource than we already are. It will get more users involved with the wiki, both by having people want to add and want to find tips, so I don't see any negatives at all.

If this passes implementation will obviously be an issue, so I would like to make an early request that if this forum passes we continue using this forum to organize a Community Project to re-implement tips (Though I'll add a bunch of Zombies ones, obviously).

Thank you for reading, discuss below. http://i.imgur.com/KUDLq.png Damac1214 17:09, November 4, 2014 (UTC)

Discussion[]

I swear ages ago we had a discussion about this, mainly in partnership with Achievements. I can't recall how it ended, but I think it might be worth finding.

Dude you don't understand the quest I went on to find the forum last night. It was hell. The search function was broken so I had to search using the Archive category.
I found like three failed forums about removing tips, I found a bunch related to Zombie Strategy pages, I even found the forum that INSPIRED the forum that removed tips, and I found the edit to COD:NOT that was made right after the forum passed to remove tips. But I couldn't find the one goddamn forum that actually passed the movement. Worst quest ever. http://i.imgur.com/KUDLq.png Damac1214 17:17, November 4, 2014 (UTC)
This and this might be the one I was thinking of. Keep in mind when some forums pass we tend to forget to update policy pages, I think some are still outdated by either still stating something, or not stating something. 17:34, November 4, 2014 (UTC)
If in that case it was approved, then it's simply a matter of adding it to policies, modifying COD:STRATEGY, etc. And anyways, we have had users like Didikins who have done great jobs at working towards weapon tips. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 02:35, November 5, 2014 (UTC)

As one of the users Damac spoke with, I do like the idea. It'd give everyone a bit more to do (Regulating, maybe even adding tips of their own), and seems like it could get pretty creative. I understand looking at what we decided in the past to help reason with why we'd keep/rid of something, but you know, everything changes. While we can't start on a "clean slate", we should look more into how it would benefit the wiki now than how it hindered it then. http://i.imgur.com/GhKJh.pngP90Deathmanhttp://i.imgur.com/uceaHlB.png02:39, November 5, 2014 (UTC)

Many articles (like weapons, perks and some maps) do feature minor tips. I do not support having tip sections though. They are quickly and often muddled with personal opinions, usless information or "no shit" type tips. And even if we do place in a guideline/policy for editing these sections, like we did for trivia sections, it would still be difficult to police the sections for every page that has a section. Hell, there are still trivia sections that don't comply with the trivia policy. And I thought we were supposed to offer an unopinonated/unbiased view of the series on mainspace articles. Yeah, I'd agree against a tip section altogether. Simply incorporating advice and of the such into the main article and bodies would be enough I believe. It just has to be regulated some, much like trivia, just to a lesser degree (and seeing as how this is adding information, not removing it). I like this general idea, except for a whole section dedicated to tips, as it may become opinionated/of poor quality/etc., and I feel it'd be unnecessary to have a whole section when the purpose of walkthroughs/overviews is to give unopinionated advice in the first place. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 05:21, November 5, 2014 (UTC)

What CoaZ said. Most "overview" sections already contain a bunch of tips that can help the player like "this weapon has a long reload time so Sleight of Hand can be useful" or "care should be taken when throwing a care package as it can land on the highway above out of reach" and whatnot. I'm completely fine with these little hints as long as they're mostly unbiased and helpful, as opposed to "do this and then do that and you should have this amount of points left and then go buy this weapon and headshot that guy" strategies which depend on specific playstyles and basically tell the player what to do rather than advise them. I also oppose dedicated tips sections since they awfully easily get flooded with obvious/useless, redundant and overall unhelpful tips. -- laagone (talk)  21:55, November 5, 2014 (UTC)

Closed- No edits in a little over two months, very little activity to begin with; the discussion is dead. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 05:35, January 8, 2015 (UTC)
