Forums: Index War Room CoD Wiki YT Channel
Forum logo
So, I found out sometime ago that the wiki actually has a YouTube channel. When I went on it I immediately noticed how inactive it was. I was thinking to myself that we should put the channel to better use rather than let it sit there with nothing happening on it, especially when you consider that YouTube has a very large audience for Call of Duty. As for how we can put it to better use, I was thinking community content. What the content may be is what I'll leave for discussion (though I am thinking community montages with clips from different people could be a good idea if anyone here has any editing skills(and time)). Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  02:15, December 1, 2013 (UTC)

This has been discussed before in Forum:Ideas for the Youtube Channel. No consensus was ever reached. I don't think making a forum that simply states "Let's have ideas" will be enough to do anything. 03:23, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
The only reason I'm asking for ideas is simply because I can't think of any right now. Kat said that commentaries would be a bad idea, but I can see some being an exception e.g. the MotD story video. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  04:13, December 1, 2013 (UTC)

We basically came to the conclusion that nobody really has the skills or desire to put that much time into the YT channel. There isn't much we could put on the channel that would be specific to the wiki anyway. Joe Copp 04:40, December 1, 2013 (UTC)

I would be willing to do some content, but they would fall into game mode guides and/or regular commentaries. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  04:54, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
If you we're to do anything with the channel, we'd need a quality assessment of what you're able to do. Which just makes this whole thing a bad idea imo. We have all the information about games on the wiki, I don't see the point in having a low quality youtube channel in our name when there's literally hundreds of channels who do the same thing. I.E driftor. KλT 05:07, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
Well, the game mode guides would be a look at how the mode plays, how to set up a class for the game mode, etc. When I can think of more, I'll update you on it to see if I can get anything going. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  05:39, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
Thing is, our videos would be as limited as our policies. If we have guides we can't use them on the wiki, and if we can't use them on wiki then the video being on our channel isn't much different to every other channel, and we hardly get noticed as it is. The best use of the channel is for videos we plan to use on the wiki as we have full control over them. I would have uploaded more campaign missions, however the recordings are quite large and if there's not enough room on my hard drive the game and video lags. 08:14, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
If some simple videos such as campaign playthroughs are needed then I could record them because I'm very able to (thanks to Nvidia Shadowplay which doesn't take as much disk space or recording resources as software recorders). However, I'm limited to CoD4, WaW, MW2 and BO2 (and although I have BO and MW3 not very legally obtained, I'd rather not use them), and my editing skills are only basic. -- laagone (talk)  11:41, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
As long as you remember to turn off social apps editing is quite easy; just trim out loading screens that aren't cutscenes. I just used WMM for the things I uploaded. 06:53, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
Just one problem I figured; I'm not running Windows 8, so the files Shadowplay records (in manual mode) is 3.9 GB/roughly 11 minutes after which I'd have to restart capturing, and I might not always notice it (and it's noticeable on the video if I take my hand off the keyboard or mouse to press F9 (an idea that just popped in my head a second ago is binding capture to Mouse-4 which I rarely use, but I dunno if that's possible)). So I might have to use Fraps after all, dunno how much CPU it eats though because I haven't used it on my current computer but hypothesis is not very much. Also, I'm at my dad's place for the next few days so I'll probably do a test run on Friday and upload it and stuff. -- laagone (talk)  11:12, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
I have Windows 8.1. You could send the files and I could edit them (I have Sony Vegas 12, in case you were wondering what my editing program was). Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  12:56, December 2, 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) It's not that; I would need Windows 8 to be able to record seamlessly, when however I have got the clips, OS doesn't really matter. -- laagone (talk)  14:58, December 2, 2013 (UTC)

What program do you use for recording? And are you on Console or PC? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  15:18, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
PC, and the problem is whether or not I'll be able to use Nvidia Shadowplay to record, or if I'll have to resort to Fraps. Shadowplay would be better because of the higher quality, lower filesize and less framerate impact but I'm not able to record in a continuous stream. However, Fraps recording ends only when I want it to end, although it eats more of my CPU (which may or may not heavily reduce FPS even below 30) and the filesizes are much bigger. -- laagone (talk)  17:16, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
I could record the gameplay then. I have a PVR and play on PS3. You can do editing if you'd like to. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  17:33, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
That could work, although I can still record some other videos (not just campaign ones, such as Zombies in BO2 which I've already done a bit). And again it doesn't need editing, not counting trimming, so you can do it just as easily. -- laagone (talk)  18:00, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
Alright then, so a Ghosts campaign walkthrough then?. And what would the zombies (or whatever you plan on doing) videos be? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  18:32, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
If you mean you could do Ghosts, go ahead. And by Zombies I generally meant other small gameplay videos even outside campaign. -- laagone (talk)  19:50, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
Are all guides in general not allowed on the wiki, or just multiplayer ones? I think a guide for Extinction could be pretty good. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  21:45, December 2, 2013 (UTC)
There's nothing wrong with guides or walkthroughs or other videos per se, but the reason they're usually not allowed is because they come from people who make them fit for generally YouTube interests and not ours - which includes advertising own channel, irrelevant stuff in commentary, unconfirmed and/or speculative information, pretty much stuff not good for the wiki. It's not also out of the question to make small videos of, say, using a specific weapon in multiplayer to show what it's like. Also, apparently Nvidia updated GeForce Experience to 1.8, so the problem I had has been compromised and I shouldn't have a problem, although if you want to take a shot then by all means do, for example with the games I don't own. -- laagone (talk)  05:45, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
Well, I still want to do the Ghosts campaign walkthrough. What are the other games do you not own then? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  13:02, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
I have CoD4, WaW, MW2 and BO2 as I said earlier, and I probably couldn't also handle everything in those games; not the best example, but just now I'm visiting home and I tried Cordis Die to put up as a sample video which is in the editing now, and I couldn't fly the jet in the end for shit so I completely cut out that part because it looks like someone getting used to the controls playing, which frankly isn't what I'd want in a video like this. The point is I won't do everything out of the ones I own, if you want you (or someone else) can also do stuff I can't in addition to CoDG. -- laagone (talk)  13:08, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
That could work. What about resolution? I can upload videos up to 1080p, but I'm guessing to keep in down to a 720p minimum? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  13:26, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
I am personally a Fraps user but have you tried Dxtory, MLG? I heard it's a great alternative.  GYKM9PK.jpg feargmtalk  14:02, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
Nope. I haven't heard it greatly, but I don't think I now need other capturing tools than Shadowplay, although I'll still use Fraps as an FPS counter. -- laagone (talk)  14:11, December 4, 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Preferably 1080p, but 720p works too. -- laagone (talk)  13:46, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

720p will probably be better in the interest of upload time, but if you want 1080p then I can do that too. Will I have to upload this myself though? It'll take me an entire day just to upload a video that's long enough for a campaign walkthrough. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  13:58, December 3, 2013 (UTC)
I think you mean 'an entire day' metaphorically, because it took for my video to upload about 4 hours, with a couple Steam games downloading at the same time so they leeched some of the bandwidth. And for the video, you can see it here. Give judgings. -- laagone (talk)  05:44, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
My upload time can be 5-10 hours. I can't really remember. I'll upload some gameplay on my channel when I get home and see what the estimated time is. But that didn't answer my other question though, would I have access to the channel to upload the videos or would someone upload it for me? It might just be better to do the latter option (my ISP is good for where I live, but even the regular US/UK ISP packages are better than what I have). Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  11:58, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and the video is good. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  12:51, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
I assume the best way would for you to upload it to MediaFire or some other file hosting site for some admin to download it and then upload it to the channel. -- laagone (talk)  13:03, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
I have an account on We could use that. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  13:41, December 4, 2013 (UTC)
I will start recording the Ghosts campaign tomorrow night and continue through the weekend. I'm guessing that you're gonna finish up the BO2 campaign, MLG? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  14:47, December 5, 2013 (UTC)
Probably yes. -- laagone (talk)  15:09, December 5, 2013 (UTC)
Alright then. By the way, you forgot to sign one of your posts above. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  16:25, December 5, 2013 (UTC)
No I didn't what are you talking about you're crazy. *looks around suspiciously* -- laagone (talk)  16:37, December 5, 2013 (UTC)
Just an addition to this conversation, I just found out I also have Shadowplay, so I might be able to use that in place of Fraps for recording as well. 06:35, December 4, 2013 (UTC)

I can probably help out too if need really be. I don't want to be the Debbie Downer here but three months down the road I predict no interest whatsoever in the YT channel, kinda like it usually is. Joe Copp 12:06, December 4, 2013 (UTC)

The campaign walkthroughs are definitely gonna be finished. As for anything else, we'll have to wait and see. I can try to see what comes of the 'Gamemode Guide' I mentioned, see how it works out. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  12:47, December 4, 2013 (UTC)

Why not do a montage? We had a one ready to go a while back and no shortage on clips, but 808 left the wiki before he could finish it. I think we could easily get one done again. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 20:41, December 7, 2013 (UTC)

I did mention that above actually. The only thing about montages, is that:
1. They need to be good clips
2. We would need a good editor for it
Now, I'm sure the clips wouldn't be a problem, but who would edit the gameplay? Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  20:53, December 7, 2013 (UTC)
Eh, doesn't really seem that "wiki-related". I mean, if we wanted our channel to be used purely for views than sure it would be a great idea, but it wouldn't really help the wiki all that much. 07:05, December 8, 2013 (UTC)
This would be something more for the community to be honest. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  14:18, December 8, 2013 (UTC)
Well then there's the argument that we shouldn't be doing things on the YT channel that aren't really related to the wiki, or else they might as well be on another channel. Joe Copp 19:50, December 8, 2013 (UTC)
We already have plenty of music videos, fan made trailers and short gameplay clips uploaded to the channel. So the argument that we shouldn't have anything that's not related to the wiki of the channel is kinda mute, since we have so much of it already. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 20:52, December 8, 2013 (UTC)
I could try editing one of the montage videos if you want me to.  I have been editing for some time now and I have Final Cut Pro.  I don't have a Youtube channel to show any of my work but you could pitch me one of the uneditied versions and I could show you one of the things I have in mind.  Or is this only for experienced users. Chas1881 (talk) 14:21, December 10, 2013 (UTC)
The problem though is that we don't have an unedited version. A while ago many users submitted clips and one user collected them all, than suddenly left. You'd have to find that forum to get the clips. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 00:01, December 15, 2013 (UTC)
Do you have any idea what the forum could be called or the rough month and year it happened?  Or what it is called?  Also, I'm not sure if the people who sent in the videos in the first place still want us to use them.  It might be easier to start a new forum asking for ideas. Chas1881 (talk) 18:26, December 16, 2013 (UTC)
Here's the discussion and here's the submissions page. I don't think we really agreed upon a song though. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 15:50, December 17, 2013 (UTC)
I have looked at some of these clips and though I think some are good and should be in a montage, I think that some are very outdated.  We also don't know if the people who sent them still want them used.  I suggest starting a new forum for people to send videos to. Chas1881 (talk) 17:38, December 17, 2013 (UTC)
You can start a forum for that if you'd like. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 02:38, December 20, 2013 (UTC)
Started. Chas1881 (talk) 15:59, December 20, 2013 (UTC)

Sam, I have the first 6 Ghosts missions rendered and they're now ready to upload. I have another 5 that I need to render as well. The first mission is in 1080p, but the following are in 720p due to problems with it rendering (it was causing my computer to overheat). Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  23:20, December 8, 2013 (UTC)

I think there should be an email option somewhere on my userpage. You can use that. Callofduty4 knows where it is. 00:03, December 15, 2013 (UTC)

I'm joining the discussion late here and clearly some work has been done on producing videos. I may have been involved in prior discussions about a YouTube channel and would like to reiterate my original opposition to the idea. One of the big problems is that for a channel to truly belong to the wiki, its content must be produced and ratified by the community. Otherwise, it's going to be a collection of videos made by a handful of people.

I'm not opposed to people making montage videos, but I raise two questions:

  1. Why do something that is already done by every COD-related channel?
  2. Why do this in the name of the wiki instead of your own channel?

Inherently, a wiki-directed channel is something that is, effectively, designed by committee, and that is a horrific way of running anything. If we were to create strategy videos, the content would have to be submitted and vetted by the community; otherwise it would be an individual's work. There are already dozens of gameplay and strategy videos on YouTube that are arguably better because they're not fluffing around with a committee.

That's food for discussion. --Scottie theNerd (talk) 10:28, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

I beleive in the case of a strategy video, they can sort of escape the committee aspect by being quite linear, since showing someone how to get from A to B is rather hard for someone to disagree with and can otherwise go forward unhindered. As for the montages, I agree. We're either simply having one persons exploits just under our name, which doesn't really show of the wiki itself. Or we're having multiple videos from many people that will all need to be filtered though by a group of users to ensure "quality". Montages don't really have a place on the wiki channel itself, and with all the other well known YouTubers on YouTube it's pointless even trying to use them to compete. And even should they just be for fun, they're better off going on a personal channel than our channel. 17:22, December 30, 2013 (UTC)
For linear elements, yes, that's straightforward. But when we get into things like multiplayer strategy, there is no "best" strategy. As food for thought, other wikis allow submission of guides by individuals, which are then up for discussion and peer-review (basically) as well as continual updating. If we had a strategy section, the wiki community to pick a guide to spotlight on the channel. --Scottie theNerd (talk) 02:28, December 31, 2013 (UTC)
Well for multiplayer elements, there's already Drift0r and Xbox Ahoy, so frankly there's no real room for us to start making our own. We'd be better off asking one of those users for some kind of partnership instead of making our own, since those really won't be watched. 02:14, January 1, 2014 (UTC)
That actually might not be too bad of an idea. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 01:32, January 18, 2014 (UTC)
It is a pretty good idea that may not be too far from reality. Drift0r and Stuart probably wouldn't adverse to, as it is extra advertising which just increases the money they get for their paycheck. Zombie Rank 8 Icon BOII Kylet357 · talk  01:45, January 18, 2014 (UTC)

Closed - The rather general consensus here is that a community-run channel would be inefficient in the face of other hyperpopular YouTubers. Unless anyone has messaged the YouTubers suggested above about some sort of partnership, I think it fair to declare this forum dead. Joe Copp 16:30, February 25, 2014 (UTC)
