Forums: Index War Room Formatting of UoTM Elections
Forum logo

I would like to suggest that we change the formatting of a vote for UOTM. I believe that it would be beneficial to reorganize votes to resembles a vote between two candidates rather than for or against one and a separate for or against another. In this way any user can oppose the election of one candidate simply by either not voting or voting for the other candidate. This style of voting is used by governmental elections and as such has proven efficient. An idea for how it might look:

===Featured User - Month=== ====Candidates

==Edit

  1. Candidate One - reasons for nomination.
  2. Candidate Two - reasons for nomination.
  3. Candidate Three - reasons for nomination.

====Voting

==Edit

Tallies to be conducted by an administrator at the end of the voting period, in order to determine the winner of the UOTM.

Candidate One - reasons for vote Candidate Two - reasons for vote Candidate Three - reasons for vote (and so on, until the month approached and a winner was chosen)

Note: I'm not saying we should limit the number of candidates to three

For the sake of context, the discussion (and my original idea) can be found here. The poll option has been scrapped and the current open-voting system is preferred. I've noticed in both discussions that Darthkenobi0's formatting doesn't show up properly. In any case, I think it's rather redundant to keep a tally of votes during the vote itself. Instead of having two sections and repeating the candidates three times, the format should be a simple list, as such:

Featured User - Month Edit

Candidate One Edit

Nomination description

  • (optional comment)- Voter1
  • - Voter2

Candidate Two Edit

Nomination description

  • - Voter 3
  • - Voter 4
  • etc.

I'd like to see the voting system as simple as possible. With a tally, the voter has to change the tally and list their name along with a comment. We all know how forgetful people are with tallies, and personally I think we're over-reliant on the voting template for too many wiki processes. Tally the votes at the end when it matters. The key in my proposal is that the onus is on the nominator to write up a detailed reason for nomination, which is difficult to express in the numbered list in Darthkenobi's suggested format. --Scottie theNerd 20:51, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

When it says the candidate names in italics, I meant that to say that that vote is for that particular candidate. Darthkenobi0Talk|Blog|Contributions|Editcount 20:53, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

So in your "Voting" section, users post the name of the candidate they wish to vote for? --Scottie theNerd 05:09, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
Wait, I think I misread what you said, but I clarified a bit in my example. So it should be more obvious what my idea is. Darthkenobi0Talk|Blog|Contributions|Editcount 05:12, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
Ah. Well in that case, my point stands. I think adding a tally complicates the voting process and isn't necessary for it to run. --Scottie theNerd 05:14, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
You mean tally the votes at the end of the elections? That makes sense, I'll add that in. Darthkenobi0Talk|Blog|Contributions|Editcount 05:20, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
With the tally gone, I think my format is easier to use than the original proposal. It's also the format used by Wikipedia for their elections, only without opposing votes. --Scottie theNerd 06:14, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
I concur. Striking through my proposed format. Shall we have anybody else actually discuss this? Two users that aren't even admins can't make much of a difference, really guys come on and make suggestions, and then we can have a vote on this. Sample Edit

I have a created a sample UotM in progress here. To vote, a user simply has to add a bullet point followed by their signature underneath the preferred nominee, with comments optional. Users are only allowed to pick one nominee. Nominees are finalised at a set date before voting can begin. The nominee with the most votes at the end of the voting period is awarded UotM. --Scottie theNerd 15:51, April 27, 2010 (UTC)

Why exactly can you only nominate somebody from the 19th to the 23rd? Shouldn't nominations be submitted at the beginning of the month? Personal Poketape 8-bit Price Emblem flippedPoketape Talk8-bit Price Emblem MW2 01:23, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

The focus is to recognise contributions within a particular month rather than retroactively handing out UotMs. A nomination at the start of the month can't be allowed because, simply put, there wouldn't be any significant contributions at that point in time. By putting the nomination openings until the third week of the month, it gives people a chance to see which users are contributing most productively and to shortlist them. --Scottie theNerd 07:33, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

VotingEdit

This is to be a tally of votes for Scottie's proposed format for UoTM elections.
