Hello all.
Back in January, some users might have noticed that the usernames of bureaucrats and admins (and VSTF and Staff) were colored differently to normal users' usernames. I decided to take this out after I couldn't find a decent color, but CodExpert and I would like to re-introduce this, as it provides an easy way for new users to identify who the admins and bureaucrats are.
For those who do not know what user hilite is, it is some CSS which will turn the usernames of bureaucrats, admins etc. a different color in the recent changes and other parts of the website. For those who are interested, the coding can be found here and an example of user hilite in action can be found here.
At the moment, we will keep this as a discussion, and voting will take place later on.
Thank you, discuss below. 13:23, August 17, 2010 (UTC)

Who is the "etc."? Shotrocket6 13:27, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- Staff members, Spam Task Force members, Help group members...
As for this, I like the idea of a user hilite. It will really help new users look for the admins and other users find the admins and report vandals. Also, it doesn't breach the "all editors are equal" policy in any way. --<choose><option>azuris_

Would they be color-coded? For instance, admins are red, 'crats are purple, and rollbacks are green? Shotrocket6 13:32, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, but at the moment rollbacks don't get a color group. 13:33, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- I think they should; they're experienced users that know a lot about the wiki. The easier it is to find someone that can help you, the easier it is to get help, eh? Shotrocket6 13:34, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- We should avoid using red as a color; it looks like a dead link. --ukimies {talk | irc | administration} 13:35, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
Firstly, I don't consider highlighted names to be a violation of COD:AEAE. Making admins easier to identify doesn't make them unequal, but it does make them easier to pick out, which may help in resolving potential issues and making it easier for users to contact when needed. Secondly, red isn't a good colour. Even if it's a different shade than a missing link, it's too easily confused and unnecessary to use such a similar colour. --Scottie theNerd 14:56, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- We can experiment with different colors to see which ones work best. And completely correct, this is not a breach of AEAE. 16:56, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
I think it's a good idea. It might help users find an admin if they need help. Cpl. Dunn(Talk) 15:00, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
Good idea. It worked well on the runscape wiki. Sgt. Guthix's mage2T C E16:59, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
I looked at the hilite in action and I really like it. The lime green color works especially well and does not conflict with any other color currently in use. Red of any shade should be avoided as well as blue. Talk 21:43, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
I am in full support. From other communities I've been in, staff, members and banned members would all have different colored names. It would definately make things easier. Talk? Edits 22:35, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure about this, being one of the many males who is colour blind, I doubt I could tell the difference between the reds. I don't mean to be a spoilsport, but perhaps we should take this into account? 22:44, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- I don't mean to be insensitive, but if you're colorblind, what difference would it make if we changed it or not? ( Don't take that offensively and I'm sorry if you did ) Talk? Edits 23:02, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
I'm good with it, But color blind can be a problem like rouge said. 22:47, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
- There are different levels of colour blindness and we can't really cater for everyone. However, we should use distinct colours rather than shades, as mentioned above. Realistically, unless you put the two shades side-by-side, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference at first glance. --Scottie theNerd 01:09, August 18, 2010 (UTC)
- And the point is to make them easier to pick out. I'm in favor of this, granted different shades of red and blue aren't used,a s they'll get too confusing. But it seems to me that this should be more of a decision among the administrators and other user groups. -- Ari "Akyoyo" MacIsaac · Talk 21:21, August 18, 2010 (UTC)
Will this make much of a difference? Most, if not all admins have custom signatures, and what's to stop normal users from making custom signatures with the admin color? Poketape Talk 01:51, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
- Names of administrators would be highlighted in the recent changes and edit history. Signatures could be made the same color, but that would mean certain colors in signatures would be off limits to other users. Bovell Talk | Contrib. 14:08, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
I like this idea, and I think green is a suitible colour for the admins etc.. Green is the main colour of the site. LITE992 14:58, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
How come i see some users already have this in red. Sgt. Guthix's mage2T C E19:41, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
- Those are actually dead links to users without a userpage. --CodΣxpert (chat) 19:42, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
How come i've only started seeing them since yesterday? Sgt. Guthix's mage2T C E19:44, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
- Because instead of instead of linking to a users contributions, it links to a user's userpage. --CodΣxpert (chat) 20:47, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
Nah that wouldnt work cause like look at my sig.Rampantlion513 Wanna Talk?? Edits 19:45, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
- As Bovell said, usernames of administrators would be hilited in recent changes, edit history, the my home feature. So it wouldn't matter if your sig was a different color. --<choose><option>

I support this feature. It allows novices to easily see who are admins. >SiPlus -talk -contributions_ 19:52, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
Saint supports this proposal in the third person. It's not at all a breach of AEAE as anyone who thinks they would be better than anyone else because their name is a different color shouldn't be an admin in the first place. SaintofLosAngelesXD(M)
I support this. New users are able to see who the Admins are without searching the COD:A page. Also, if this passes, should this be put on the Welcome Templates as well?
--Munchable901~-<Leave a Message..!>02:01, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
Thinking about it, it seems like a great idea, but the fact that many colors are used, and new users might not be familiar or aware of the system, why not simply have a tag attached that says "Administrator" in sub or superscript, that links to COD:A as proof? That would literally spell it out, and make it easier, more obvious. Thoughts? Darthkenobi0(talk) 02:04, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
Actually, the default signatures for admins/'crats if this goes through will also be hilited. Any link to an admin/'crat's user page will be hilited, anywhere on the website. 12:57, August 20, 2010 (UTC)

- Support — A good idea, one that should work very well on the wiki. It will help new users distinguish who they can go for to help. A good idea is to change welcome templates to note that admins names are highlighted in a certain color, so users who are welcomed can get help more efficiently, than just sorting through usernames and trying to figure out who is an admin. Marty McFly is also cool. TheManOfIron(Wanna talk?) 18:28, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
Please keep your off topic comments to yourself or put it in a blog. And green is also not a color to be used, I'll give you a hint. Look at all the colors that appear in recent changes and else where. If you dont see a color on these pages, then its a safe bet it could be used. Geez. Talk 18:43, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
And if you took the time to look at the link Cod4 provided you'd have seen that lime green stands out over all the rest of the colors. Talk 18:45, August 21, 2010 (UTC)
