Forums: Index War Room Using our YouTube channel
Forum logo

It has been 9 months since our YouTube channel has shown any signs of activity. So far, we have just used videos from other channels for use in our articles, but I say no to this because some people use this as an invitation to upload videos and use our wiki to get views, ignoring the fact that there already is a video there. And sometimes they even get away with this and we end up having two walkthroughs in the same article.

Sometimes we get the occasional anon adding XboxAhoy guides to our weapon articles even when we are against the use of his videos (although they are pretty nice) because of its use of IRL info.

Then there are some people who add gameplay of themselves in a map and also use our wiki to get views.

This may seem minor, but we need to put a stop to this. We need to actually use our YouTube channel for wiki-related reasons and upload our own weapon guides, walkthroughs, loading screens, and gameplay of maps. We can also throw in a few extra stuff like our own trailer analyses, videos of cut quotes, and even a video supplement to go with our weekly news blogs.

Pictogram voting comment Comment — Well with that it means we need to find a new way to upload videos to the Wiki's channel, Sort out rules with it, Find good recording software and all that. It seems a bit of a hassle for most. Twig (Talk) 06:27, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

It would be a lot easier to record and upload on a PC using FRAPS. Platinum Trophy PS3 icon Joseph Tan l talk l edit count l contribs l Platinum Trophy PS3 icon 06:36, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
You forgot virtualdub! Maxwell123 (talk) 14:48, October 27, 2012 (UTC)
I have considered getting a device to record off of the television. May not happen in the near future but if I do I'd be glad to record walkthroughs of any of the games, as I have all of them. Magma-Man 07:14, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Pictogram voting oppose Oppose — If we ban all users from adding videos because we're using our own channel it's going to be very hard to moderate.

Also, we'll have issues with the channel itself, for safety reasons we could only let certain users have access to the channel, similar to our Twitter account. This would make it very hard for users to get videos on the Wiki even if the video is of good quality. 09:36, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
They would have to be standardized for each article. Joe Copp 09:40, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

I'm not saying we should ban all videos, I'm just saying that we should just start making our own videos to replace the ones on our articles to avoid people from using our mainspace articles to get views. I never said that every video on our wiki has to come from our channel.

We don't need videos immediately, we can just have a user say he has a video and give us a link to it, and then one of the people who has the password to our channel can see if it's good and upload it to our channel.Platinum Trophy PS3 icon Joseph Tan l talk l edit count l contribs l Platinum Trophy PS3 icon 09:44, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
Like the tf2 wiki, users have to create a video then upload it with a link before they decide to upload it, pluss they do have policy on how to perform the recording to keep video in good quality.
Maxwell123 (talk) 14:48, October 27, 2012 (UTC)
Also this whole thing is a bit hypocritical. We're against giving users views for their videos because we want views for our own channel. If a video is of good quality then let them keep their video and get some views. And unless we want to become CI and put a wordmark on every video we upload then there's no difference. You'll find it's a lot easier to simply remove videos and give warnings, instead of making it so most of our videos from now have to come from us. Also is the issue of getting other users videos, we'll either need them to send us the file, or we'll have to use a YouTube converter to download their video to re-upload it on to our channel. Frankly it's a lot of extra effort just to give our Wikis channel some views. 09:50, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Sam. I don't really see much of an advantage with this setup. Joe Copp 09:51, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
I never said this was for getting views. Platinum Trophy PS3 icon Joseph Tan l talk l edit count l contribs l Platinum Trophy PS3 icon 09:52, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
Then what, really, are you trying to do here? We already remove videos on articles that are used solely for self-advertising, but we keep the ones that contribute to the solidity of the article. I don't really see a huge problem with how we do it now. Joe Copp 09:55, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
More content. Replacing videos isn't the only thing I'm asking for here. (You guys can choose not to do that at all.) I mentioned including adding cut quotes, trailer analyses and/or video supplements to go with our blogs. I'm not just focusing on mainspace articles either. Our news blogs can also become a lot more interesting if we choose to do this. Platinum Trophy PS3 icon Joseph Tan l talk l edit count l contribs l Platinum Trophy PS3 icon 10:08, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
Again, I see no advantage to using our channel specifically. Anyone can upload these videos. Joe Copp 10:17, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
Then why do we have a channel in this first place if we're not going to use it for this wiki? Do we just have one for the sake of having one? Why do we even have videos in it if all of the videos in it could have been uploaded on the channel of the creator? Pictogram voting comment Comment — Everything here has dwindled: IRC, Chat, Facebook and now YouTube channel. This however, I don't know what to say. Major Rank MarinesReznov115TalkTactical Nuke inventory icon MW2
