Stuhlinger: "Who’s glasses are these?"
Richtofen: "A great man, Sammy. He shined a light in the darkest corners of our souls."
Richtofen to Stuhlinger regarding George.

George Andrew Romero is a movie director, a special Zombie and the main antagonist in the Zombies map Call of the Dead. Romero was doing research for a World War II movie when he came across Nazi documents pertaining to Element 115.[3]

Overview[]

History[]

George was a prolific horror director who was filing a new movie, Call of the Dead, at a siberian shipwreck after having found the place during research in Occult Nazi history. He was at first human while working on the movie with Danny Trejo, Robert Englund, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michael Rooker and his crew. During one of the breaks due to a mistake by Michael, a real zombie crawls out of the window and snatches Romero away, later infecting him with Element 115.

Following this, the Call of the Dead Cast assisted Ultimis in escaping to Shangri-La while George attempted to impede their efforts. It is unknown what became of him after, but his glasses could be found in the Siberian Pocket Dimension. Romero had an assistant named Sally, who searched for her boss following his disappearance. She eventually became trapped in the Shangri-La time loop with the explorers Brock and Gary, failing to ever locate him.

Gameplay[]

Romero appears via a lightning strike in the water at spawn during the beginning of the game, slowly walking out of the steam and sea foam. Romero always begins a game in his Calm state, slowly walking around while groaning as a massive blue aura surrounds him. George will always walk slowly to the player closest to him, and can ride Ziplines as well as make impossibly high jumps in order to best close the distance between him and his target.

Approaching George will still prompt him to swipe at players with the stagelight. If he is successful, or if players attack him, he will roar and shift to his Berserk State, quickly chasing the closest player to him. In his Berserk state, his clothes are ripped, and the exposed flesh is rotten and decomposing. He also can electrify surrounding zombies in this state by striking the ground with his stage light weapon, allowing the zombies to give off an electric charge if they get too close. His roar will also convert nearby Zombies into sprinters. He can be re-calmed down by leading him to water or temporarily calmed by shooting him with the V-R11.

Sometimes when he is calmed down after attacking, he says in a scared voice "I'm okay, I'm okay", indicating he cannot control these fits of rage. He will sometimes roar, similar to his berserk mode. This will make the zombies nearby sprint towards the player. In this state, except for the blue aura and orange eyes, he looks fairly human.

Killing Romero[]

Romero's health does not increase throughout the higher rounds. His health is based on the number of players in the game; Romero has 250,000 health for every player in the game, up to a total of 1,000,000 health in a four-player game. As a result it takes a lot of time and ammunition to damage him enough to retreat, and he cannot be fully killed. He will always return two rounds after being defeated, including the round when the player neutralized him (one full round and the current round). Neither Insta-Kill or Nukes have any effect on him.

A variety of weapons are prime choices for killing George Romero. The D115 Disassembler (Pack-a-Punched Dragunov) is extremely effective at killing George Romero, as every headshot deals 10,000 damage, meaning that the D115 Disassembler can completely kill Romero in 25 shots on Solo, 50 shots if playing with two players, or 75 shots if playing with three players. However, shots must be aimed carefully, especially if playing with three players, as ammunition is limited. In the case of four players, the D115 Disassembler cannot kill Romero before it runs out of ammunition, as it only has 90 shots, which allow it to deal a potential 900,000 damage to Romero, whilst Romero will still have 100,000 health left to deplete. The L115 Isolator (Pack-a-Punched L96A1) also deals 10,000 per headshot, but its low rate of fire and lower ammunition capacity make it inferior to D115 Disassembler. The Death Machine can work effectively as well, although it will take several machines before enough damage is done. Upgraded Ray Guns and upgraded light machine guns work well together. The Pack-a-Punched Scavenger is also particularly effective, though it may kill Zombies in the vicinity of George, potentially unintentionally progressing rounds.

If attacked while in water, Romero will roar but not enter his Berserked state, giving the players an upperhand in dispatching him.

As George takes more and more damage, the blue aura around his stage light will start flicking, then if damaged more, it changes to orange. During this near-death state Romero's speed increases and he will also begin to roar much more often. When finally damaged enough, he will retreat into the water.

Upon his retreat the Death Machine and a Random Perk Bottle power-up will spawn. Romero will drop a Lightning Bolt power-up instead of a Death Machine if the player has the Stand-in achievement and is playing a solo game or if the player has the Ensemble Cast achievement. The player will also get the Wunderwaffe DG-2 if they are in co-op as long as they have Ensemble Cast or Stand-in achievement.

Alternatively, George A. Romero can be forced to retreat into the water via shooting him with a V-R11 Lazarus. He will not appear for the remainder of the round, and will reappear the next round. This can be a useful method if in very high rounds, when players want to focus solely on progressing through rounds, as only one shot in the V-R11 Lazarus is required to banish Romero for the round, which can easily be replenished during the round if a zombie happens to drop a Max Ammo. George will not drop a free perk or Death Machine by doing this method.

Weapon[]

George A. Romero's weapon is a stage light with exposed wires protruding out of the end causing it to glow blue. The weapon takes two hits to down a player, or three hits with Juggernog, dealing a massive 90 damage per hit to the player, whereas a normal Zombie only does 50 damage per hit. One of his main attacks is to strike the ground to electrocute players and Zombies alike, he can also use it to strike the player when close enough. Romero will only use his weapon when shot by the player or when a player comes within close range.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

In Tag der Toten, George's glasses can be found in a table near the buildable table in the lighthouse. If the player interacts with the glasses, each of the characters will give a quote about George, and the player will be awarded with 500 points.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • George Romero himself did not voice his character in Call of the Dead, only providing his likeness for the map. He is the only Guest character on the map not voiced by their real life counterpart.[2]

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

  • When initially spawning into a game, George can be seen holding a giant knife if the player is quick enough to get to him, although this is only done through noclipping, as this becomes his stage light within about two seconds.
  • When a Nuke has been activated, George will laugh.
  • Despite the fact that the Wunderwaffe DG-2 has infinite damage, it will do only one point of damage on George to prevent ease of killing him.
  • Sometimes after defeating George, the power-ups will spawn in another area of water in the map (usually the spawning area) instead of where George went away, much like the teleporters in Der Riese. When this happens, George will vanish when he is about to walk in the nearest pool of water and Samantha's giggle is heard.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies[]

  • In the mobile version of Call of the Dead, George has black hair and does not wear glasses.
  • Killing George in his berserk state will cause him to run into the water and his body is seen physically falling as he touches the water in the mobile version.
  • He has a unique warning indicator as opposed to the standard zombie warning.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

  • George's glasses appear in Tag der Toten, as a tribute to his passing in 2017.
    • Each member of Victis, excluding Stuhlinger, will show remorse for George. Instead, Richtofen will show remorse for Samuel's part.
  • The name of Tag der Toten (German for Day of the Dead) is a reference to George Romero's own film of the same name.
