"Transported across the Millennia, Scarlett, Diego, Bruno and Shaw find themselves caught up in a sinister ritual, where they are thrust into brutal gladiatorial combat against waves of unnatural enemies that stand between them and the High Priest of Chaos..."
— Mission Briefing

IX (pronounced Nine) is the second Zombies map featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and the twenty-sixth map overall. Chronologically, it is the third map in the Chaos story. This map introduces two new special enemies: the Destroyers and the Marauders. There are also Zombified Tigers that appear randomly throughout the map. The map also introduces a new wonder weapon, the Death of Orion, as well as a new variant of the shield, the Brazen Bull.

Overview

IX is set in a gladiatorial arena sometime during the 80s BC. The map is relatively small, with players spawning in a tunnel that leads into the main arena. From there, the player can either buy the door to the Danu temple or Ra temple, with the Odin and Zeus temple gates being accessible from the inside. Each of the temples connect to a circular underground chamber, which leads into the main temple that contains the Pack-a-Punch Altar.

Features

IX shares similar mechanics to previous maps in the Zombies franchise. As each round progresses, difficulty gradually increases. A new element unique to this map is that in certain key areas the floors are fitted with a device that produces streams of fire. The pattern in which they go off is randomized by each round, but rotates through a few specific patterns.

Intro Cutscene

Transcript

The scene opens with Scarlett Rhodes, Diego Necalli, Bruno Delacroix, and Stanton Shaw in an abandoned temple in Delphi, Greece.

Oracle (voice over): You are travelers. You come seeking answers.

The four sit around a giant bowl filled with a mysterious substance. Each of them holds a smaller bowl containing the substance.

Oracle (voice over): Hear my voice. Heed my warning. The knowledge you seek was not intended for mortal man. Breathe deeply. The power of the vapors will transport you. Let yourself fall through the ages. Through time and space itself.

The four inhale the vapors from the bowl. Diego's eyes turn completely black.

Oracle (voice over): And pray for your safe return...

'The scene changes to Diego, who's eyes change to blue. He is also dressed in gladiator attire and face paint. The camera zooms out, showing the other three are also wearing new outfits. All four are in a cage, watching the High Priest of Chaos greet the crowd from the podium in the center of the arena. Prisoners are brought out by members of The Order. A member of the order kneels down and presents the Ra Sentinel Artifact to the High Priest. The High Priest raises it to the crowd, to thunderous applause. He then pulls out a headpiece, which attaches itself to the Artifact, creating a force field around the High Priest and releasing Prima Materia outside of it. The prisoners are transformed into zombies, while gladiators are released into the arena to fight them. A zombie tries to grab the four through the gate, but then decides to attack the gladiators. The gladiators are mauled to death by the zombies. Afterwards, Scarlett, Diego, Bruno, and Shaw are let into the arena. The zombies turn their attention to them and attack them, but are all killed by the group. A tied up prisoner starts screaming. A Blightfather emerges from his chest, killing him. The four face towards the Blightfather as the cutscene ends.

Transcript

The scene opens with blue symbols coming together in the arena, opening up a portal before disappearing. The High Priest of Chaos walked toward it, reaching his hand inside. The portal collapses, burning the High Priest's hand and face with Prima Materia, causing him to scream in pain. He removes his mask, showing scars.

Scarlett: Novum Ignotum!

The High Priest puts his mask back on and turns to Scarlett.

Scarlett: The Novum Ignotum Proclamation dictates you must grant us clemency.

High Priest: You should not have knowledge of such texts.

The High Priest grabs Scarlett by the throat.

High Priest: You are but an ignorant slave!

Scarlett: I know more than you think! And I'm nobody's slave!

Scarlett spits in the High Priest's face. He then pushes her to the ground.

Diego: What are you talking about, Scarlett? (to members of The Order) Get your filthy hands off me!

The High Priest gestures to his men to prepare Scarlett, Diego, Bruno, and Shaw to be executed by decapitation.

Shaw: This can't be happening! We're going to die...

Bruno: Oui.

An executioner raises an axe above Scarlett's head. After he swings it downwards, the screens goes to black. The scene resumes as a first person view in the arena. The High Priest removes his mask. Diego's decapitated head is shown being held by an executioner as the High Priest walks away. The cutscene ends.
