- "Raul and his father started over, sold drugs for easy money. They became rich, powerful legends of Managua."
- — Salazar
According to Javier Salazar, Jose was once an ordinary man taking care of two children. After an earthquake in 1972 and paralleling economic troubles, the family lost everything and resorted to the drug trade to make money.
The Cartel and DeathEdit
Eventually the family became powerful and prominent by the drug game and other activities, leading to the Menendez Cartel becoming "rich, powerful legends of Managua" and "all but untouchable".
However, the dealings caught the attention of the C.I.A. who authorized an assassination order on Jose. The assassination, which took place in 1982, was successful. Jose's son, Raul, succeeded his father as leader of the Cartel. Jose's death took place in Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified in the final mission of the game, Hostile Takeover.
- Judging by the cross and Virgin Mary statue present at his shrine, Jose is of Catholic faith.
- He appears much younger in Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified.
