The L96A1 is unlocked at level 27.
Unlocked at Level 27, the L96A1 deals the highest effective damage per shot of all bullet weapons in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Its multipliers ensure a one-hit-kill to the shoulders, stomach, chest or head when unsuppressed. However, the L96A1 has a high amount of recoil and sway, a low center speed, a small magazine size and a low rate of fire due to its bolt-action nature. This can leave the player vulnerable between shots as well as making consecutive shots difficult.

  +
  +
The L96A1 has the largest one-shot kill area of all sniper rifles in Black Ops multiplayer. The L96A1, like all other sniper rifles, does seventy damage per bullet at all ranges. Like all other sniper rifles, the L96A1 deals double the damage on all headshots and neck shots. This severe damage increase ensures a one shot kill, even when the L96A1 is suppressed. The L96A1 also does 50% more damage if a bullet hits the upper torso, like other sniper rifles. Where the L96A1 differs from the other sniper rifles is that the L96A1 also gets a 50% damage boost to the lower torso and the biceps. This means that the L96A1 will be a one shot kill to almost any part of the enemy's body that is above the waist. The damage multiplier the L96A1 has on the biceps is unique among sniper rifles in Black Ops Multiplayer. This power is the L96A1's biggest strength as a sniper rifle, giving users the most options for scoring one shot kills. The L96A1 also has high penetration power, meaning the L96A1 will retain most of its damage when shooting through surfaces. An un-suppressed L96A1 shot that hits the head or neck, like other sniper rifles, will deal an enormous 140 damage, meaning that the L96A1 has the potential to even get one shot kills through walls if the user strikes the head or neck, so long as at least 71% of the bullet damage is retained when shooting through the obstacle.
  +
  +
The L96A1 is a one shot kill to anywhere on the body in Hardcore game types, like other sniper rifles. Because of all sniper rifles possessing the raw power necessary to get a one shot kill, even when suppressed, the L96A1's power advantage is absent in Hardcore.
  +
  +
The L96A1's biggest weakness as a sniper rifle is its fire rate. The L96A1 is the only bolt-action sniper rifle in Black Ops multiplayer, meaning it has by far the worst fire rate of all sniper rifles, and that the bolt must be cycled before the next shot can be fired. The L96A1 fires at a paltry 50 RPM, less than one shot per second. The L96A1 heavily punishes users for missing shots.
  +
  +
The L96A1's accuracy is another weakness, being the worst among sniper rifles. The L96A1 has a standard scope with clean crosshair, but the L96A1 has the largest recoil of all sniper rifles, with recoil values varying between 80 and 100 upwards, as well as 50 to 55 to the right. The L96A1 has so much recoil per shot that the user's aim will be completely removed from where the user was aiming at as soon as the recoil is felt. The L96A1 also is tied with the Dragunov for the slowest centerspeed of all sniper rifles, at just 500. Not only does the L96A1 kick up tremendously, but it takes a long time for the user's aim to re-center. The very slow fire rate means that the recoil profile, which is abysmal, isn't much of a concern. What really hurts the L96A1's accuracy relative to other sniper rifles is its idle sway. It has the usual idle sway statistics of other sniper rifles, except that the L96A1 has 50% more idle sway than the other sniper rifles, meaning that idle sway will be more prominent on this sniper rifle specifically.
  +
  +
The L96A1's handling characteristics are poor. The L96A1 allows users to move at 95% of the base movement speed, and strafe at 40% of the base movement speed. The L96A1 has a lethargic aim down sight time of 400 milliseconds, and the L96A1 has abysmal hip-fire accuracy. In conjunction with the L96A1's very slow rate of fire, the L96A1 is among the worst weapons in the game at close quarters combat, despite the power. The L96A1's reload animation is 3.3 seconds long, or 3.5 seconds long if the magazine is empty. In either case, the L96A1 can perform a Reload Cancel in 2.45 seconds. The L96A1 has the slowest reload speed among all sniper rfiles, and it is a slow reload overall, but all sniper rifles in Black Ops multiplayer have poor reload speeds, so the L96A1 isn't very out of character in that regard.

  +
The L96A1 is tied with the PSG1 for the smallest magazine capacity in its class, holding just five rounds per magazine. Users of the L96A1 will spawn in with a twenty round starting ammo loadout. While this capacity and starting ammo loadout are both very small, considering the L96A1's immense power and slow fire rate, the L96A1 won't burn through ammo very quickly at all, and players that can hit their shots will be able to get very good mileage out of this startin gammo loadout.
It has the highest amount of sway of all the sniper rifles. Set to 6 degrees, this follows the trend given to most bolt-action sniper rifles in the Call of Duty series, such as the R700 from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the Intervention from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

  +
The L96A1 has the standard assortment of sniper rifle attachments available. Extended Mags is the only beneficial attachment available that isn't an optical attachment, so those who are fine with simply using the default scope may use this attachment by default. Extended Mags doubles the L96A1's magazine capacity to ten rounds, making reloads far less frequent. With that being said, some will find this attachment to be unnecessary, seeing how the L96A1's very slow fire rate and immense power make it so that reloads aren't terribly problematic to begin with.
The Variable Zoom is arguably the most versatile attachment to equip on the L96A1, allowing the user to engage targets both closer and farther away than would normally be practical. Similar to other Variable Zoom scopes seen in other titles, the default zoom level is slightly less than the regular scope's zoom level, allowing for easier quickscoping. The Infared Scope and Extended Mags are also solid choices, although Ghost Pro will negate the former, and the latter is arguably unnecessary if any other attachment is desired. As well, due to the amount of delay between shots, the player can easily find cover and reload while doing so. As Extended Mags works better against fighting larger groups of enemies in a short time frame, the L96A1 is incapable of doing so, making the niche of this attachment very situational.

  +
The Suppressor is an absolutely awful choice on the L96A1. All suppressed sniper rifles have the exact same one shot kill area, limited to just the head and the neck. For those wishing to use a suppressed sniper rifle, the L96A1 is by far the worst choice for that role, seeing how its fire rate, accuracy, magazine capacity, and starting ammo loadout are so poor, and that the L96A1 doesn't provide any reason to suppress it over other suppressed sniper rifles.
The L96A1 utilizes the semi-unique SUSAT scope when equipped with the ACOG scope attachment, sharing this trait with the Enfield. The ACOG on the L96A1 demands high levels of accuracy at close to mid range, as the player is unable to hold their breath to steady the scope's sway. In general, many players find the ACOG scope very ineffective on the weapon, and many would opt for a low zoom on the Variable Zoom attachment instead for Closer engagements.

  +
The ACOG Scope is the L96A1's designated closer-range optical attachment. The L96A1 specifically uses the SUSAT Scope. Using the ACOG Scope will allow the user to see their peripheral vision while aiming, as well as not have elements of the HUD blocked out while aiming. The ACOG Scope will also decrease the aim down sight time to just 350 milliseconds, meaning that players who want to Quickscope may want to give this attachment some consideration, and the ACOG Scope has the lowest zoom level of all the optical attachments available to the L96A1. The ACOG Scope is the optical attachment to consider if using the L96A1 more aggressively than most. The ACOG Scope will also halve the speed at which idle sway occurs, making manual compensation for idle sway somewhat easier. However, the ACOG Scope lacks the zoom level of other scopes, making it not as ideal for long range combat, and the idle sway cannot be steadied with the ACOG Scope. The ACOG Scope fits a specific playstyle, and as such, the worth of this attachment will depend on what the user wants.
Like all other sniper rifles, when using a Suppressor, the L96A1 can only get one shot kills to the head and neck. However, since all sniper rifles do the same effective damage when suppressed, the L96A1 is by far the worst to equip the suppressor, due to the difficulty of landing follow-up shots, slowest rate of fire in-class and the general inconsistency of one-shot kills with this weapon while doing so.

  +
The Infrared Scope provides an infrared thermal view, highlighting enemies white hot. The Infrared Scope can help detect enemies that would've otherwise been missed, especially on maps with poor visibility such as Hanoi. However, the Infrared Scope badly reduces detail on the environment, and Ghost Pro users will blend in with the blue background. Much like with the Thermal Scope in Modern Warfare 2, snow will also tend to be highlighted and can distract the user, so use this attachment with caution on maps like Array and WMD.
Hardened Pro is an excellent perk choice on the L96A1, allowing the rifle to land consistent one-hit kills through cover, and allowing the user to remain accurate when taking enemy fire. With said perk equipped, the L96A1 is capable of eliminating equipment and enemies alike with a single shot through walls and even thin metal. Scout is also a solid choice, letting the user stabilize the L96A1's high sway for longer periods of time. Sleight of Hand is not recommended, as the Pro perk has no effect on Sniper Rifles.

  +
The Variable Zoom is a versatile optical attachment for the L96A1 that provides three zoom levels: a low-level zoom, the default zoom option, and the high-level zoom option. This attachment allows users to adjust the zoom level accordingly for the situation, allowing users to tone it down for closer engagements, and dial it up to zero in on very long sightlines. The Variable Zoom has to be manually adjusted by zooming in, which can be annoying to do at times, but the versatility that this attachment provides makes it a popular choice among snipers.
This weapon actually performs very well with no attachments equipped, as every attachment slot has minimal/adverse affects on the L96A1: The variable zoom levels will have to be modified before going into the appropriately ranged gunfight, Extended Mags' niche doesn't work well with this weapon, the Infrared Scope makes Ghost Pro users practically invisible, and the ACOG Scope disables the ability to steady it.

  +
The L96A1 best compares to the PSG1, the next most powerful sniper rifle on offer, which also has a small magazine capacity and ammo loadout. Compared to the PSG1, the L96A1 can get a one shot kill to the biceps, something the PSG1 cannot do. Other than that, the PSG1 has the L96A1 beat in most areas, having a significantly faster rate of fire, less idle sway, less recoil, more centerspeed, a faster reload speed, and more of a fighting chance in CQC than the L96A1. If the user can live without the ability to get a one shot kill to the biceps, users should use the PSG1 instead.
Due to its high potential for one-shot kills, it is usually the most commonly seen sniper rifle online. It is often compared to the other high powered sniper rifle, the PSG1 . The primary difference between the two weapons is that the bolt-action L96A1 has a slower fire rate, but in return has a 1.5x multiplier to the shoulders, allowing for more consistent one-shot kills to the upper body. The PSG1, on the other hand, has lower sway and can be fired semi-automatically, but cannot achieve a one-hit-kill to the shoulders. With these details in mind, choosing the L96A1 or the PSG1 comes down to whether the player prefers damage or rate of fire.

The L96A1 is a bolt-action sniper rifle featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Multiplayer

The L96A1 is unlocked at level 27.

The L96A1 is a one shot kill to anywhere on the body in Hardcore game types, like other sniper rifles. Because of all sniper rifles possessing the raw power necessary to get a one shot kill, even when suppressed, the L96A1's power advantage is absent in Hardcore.

Zombies

In Zombies, it is available out of the Mystery Box. It is a one-hit-kill in the early rounds, but after round 7 it loses its one-hit-kill ability to the chest and below. It is not available on the Wii version. It is capable of killing with a headshot up to about the thirties. Due to the L96A1's abysmal rate of fire, Double Tap Root Beer proves very effective on the weapon, allowing players to land shots within quicker succession while still having moderate control over their ammo.

The L96A1 is not a very efficient weapon for the game mode, as the L96A1 will not make a lot of points, as it usually nets 60 points per kill with a one shot kill to the abdomen or below. As such, the L96A1 is a terrible option for early rounds, as weapons like the SMGs and the Assault Rifles can net a lot more points than the L96A1 can.

When Pack-a-Punched, the L96A1 becomes the L115 Isolator. Its damage per shot increases to 1000, and the multipliers are vastly increased, allowing shots to the chest or below to be a one shot kill up until the twenties. As well, the L115 Isolator deals a whopping 10000 damage per headshot, easily killing zombies until round 40 and above. The L115 Isolator also has a larger magazine size [of 8] and more reserve ammunition, giving the L115 Isolator 80 shots to use compared to the L96A1's 50 rounds.

The L115 Isolator, unfortunately, is statistically inferior to the D115 Disassembler, which shares pretty much the same stats as the L115 Isolator, with the sole differences being a larger magazine size of 10 vs the L115 Isolator's 8, and the drastically higher rate of fire. As such, there is little to no reason to use the L115 Isolator if the player is capable of obtaining the D115 Disassembler, besides the L96A1's superior performance to the Dragunov in the earlier rounds.

This weapon can be considered a successor to the PTRS-41 from Call of Duty: World at War, due to their similar damage output, ammo capacity (non Pack-a-Punched), mag size, and bolt-action fire, although its reload time is some degree faster and its cycling rate is slower.
