The Lomonosov Incident was a background event in Call of Duty: Black Ops III that is mentioned in the Omnipedia.

The Lomonosov Incident was one of many international incidents that occurred following the Collapse of the European Union and the dissolution of NATO in 2028 that further ratcheted up the tension between the United States and Russia.

On the morning of July 11th 2031, the American research ship USS Pleasant was sunk with the loss of all hands by the Russian Navy while it was operating in contested waters in the Arctic Ocean.

The United States claimed that the ship had been carrying out measurements of deep sea temperatures as part of their routine ongoing data collection efforts monitoring the rate of climate change. However, Russia stated that the USS Pleasant was in fact a prospecting vessel exploring the mineral wealth of the Lomonosov Ridge; an 1800km long underwater mountain range that runs from the Eastern Siberian Ridge of the Russian coast to the Lincoln Shelf, which stretches from the coast of Greenland to the Beaufort Shelf off of Canada.

The Lomonsov Ridge was discovered in 1948 by Russia and is named after the Russian mathematician Mikhail Lomonosov. It has been the centre of numerous territorial claims throughout the 21st century, including those of Russia, Denmark and Canada.

Wreckage recovered from the ocean floor included a number of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which Russia claims were equipped with deep sore sampling equipment. These findings were supported by an independent panel of enquiry.
