The MK46 is a light machine gun that appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Heroes. It was first revealed in the footage released during Call of Duty XP.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

Campaign[]

Its first usable appearance is in "Bag and Drag", where it can be found in a GIGN armory, and is also carried by friendly non-playable characters. It also appears with a Foregrip in the mission "Dust to Dust", being used by Yuri, and also by Truck in "Scorched Earth".

Multiplayer[]

The MK46 is available in a default class with both a Grip and a Red Dot Sight, but is unlocked for Create-a-Class once level 54 is reached. It is also mounted on the Assault Drone point streak with a unique 50-round belt.

The MK46 is a consistent damage LMG. The MK46 deals anywhere from 40 to 35 damage depending on the user's range. This means that the MK46 will always be able to kill an opponent in 3 shots, and the MK46 is a one shot kill at all ranges in Hardcore game types. The MK46 has a two headshot kill range of about 37 meters, and both shots need to be headshots. The MK46 consistently deals high damage. The MK46 also has high penetration power, allowing it to retain much of its damage when shooting through surfaces.

The MK46 lays claim to the fastest rate of fire of all LMGs, firing at an impressive 857 RPM. This rate of fire beats all other LMGs, most assault rifles, and even some SMGs, with it having the same rate of fire as the P90. The MK46 possesses a great damage output as a result when compared to other LMGs.

The MK46's accuracy is decent. The MK46's iron sights are pretty obstructive of the user's point of aim, with the MK46 also having very heavy gunkick. That being said, the MK46 actually has one of the smallest recoil profiles of all LMGs, with recoil values of 60 to the left, 60 to the right, 50 upwards, and 30 downwards. The MK46's recoil profile has some of the lowest vertical recoil out of all LMGs, and the MK46 has lighter horizontal recoil than the average LMG too. Only the L86 LSW is more accurate than the MK46. The MK46 also has a fantastic centerspeed of 1700. Between the moderate recoil and high centerspeed, accuracy is not a large concern on the MK46.

The MK46 has the bad handling characteristics users come to expect from an LMG. Users are limited to moving at a dreadful 80% of the base speed, strafe at 32% of the base speed, aiming down the sights takes 400 milliseconds, and the MK46 has large hip-fire crosshairs. Like most other LMGs, the MK46 has a pitiful reload speed, with the reload animation taking 8.67 seconds long. The user can Reload Cancel after 6.1 seconds. The MK46 actually has the fastest reload cancel out of all the belt-fed LMGs, but in the grand scheme, a 6.1 second reload cancel is terrible. Users will have to be extremely careful when reloading, as doing so takes a long time. This bevy of handling problems makes handling oriented perks such as Sleight of Hand, Quickdraw, and Stalker popular choices to consider.

The MK46, like all other LMGs, has an enormous 100 round belt capacity, tied for the largest among all primary and secondary weapons. The MK46 also allows users to spawn in with 200 rounds total.

Several weapon proficiencies stand out on the MK46. Impact further enhances the MK46's penetration capability, allowing it to shred opponents behind cover with brutal efficiency. Attachments is by far the most popular option, like it is on most LMGs, as the LMGs have several extremely useful attachments, and users usually want at least two of the attachments available. Focus is helpful in maintaining accuracy at medium to long ranges, and the MK46 will likely see usage at said ranges due to its superior accuracy over other LMGs. Finally, Speed is extremely helpful, as it will increase the user's overall movement speed to 88%. Unlike in most other Call of Duty games, a user's movement speed in Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer is fixed to whatever weapon equipped makes the user the slowest, across all weapons. Even when the user of the MK46 switches to a nimble secondary like a Handgun, the user will still be moving at the movement speed of the LMG, not the handgun. Speed will prove helpful if using lighter secondary weapons, as not only will it allow the user to move faster when using the MK46, but it will also allow users to move faster when using light secondaries alongside the MK46.

The MK46 gets the usual assortment of attachments available to LMGs. The optical attachments are all available, with little surprise. Many users of the MK46 like to use one of these attachments, as the MK46's iron sights are pretty unpopular. However, it should be noted that the front sight will not be flipped down when an optical sight is in use, much like with the AK-47. The Thermal Scope stands out a lot on the MK46, as the MK46 suffers from notable gunkick, and the Thermal Scope will remove gunkick entirely, allowing users to more easily track their own shots. It is of similar function to the Thermal Scope on the L86 LSW, as the removal of gunkick on these LMGs will often surprise users and make them realize how accurate the LMG truly is.

The Silencer provides stealth benefits at almost no cost to the MK46. The MK46's two headshot kill range is reduced, but that's not consistent, and the three shot kill is completely unaffected, as the three shot kill range of the MK46 is infinite. The Silencer provides many rewards for a laughably small risk.

The Grip is an extremely popular choice on the MK46, as it tends to be on most LMGs. The MK46's recoil values become ten percent smaller, and the centerspeed of the MK46 is inflated to an enormous 2125. These two effects make the MK46 monumentally more accurate, and the MK46 is already fairly accurate without the Grip. The Grip makes the MK46 among the most accurate weapons in the game, but it can be seen as overkill seeing how the MK46 has a satisfactory recoil profile.

Rapid Fire increases the MK46's rate of fire to 1071 RPM, one of the highest rates of fire in the game. Rapid Fire is the user's only way of making an LMG kill more quickly, and if that is what users want, Rapid Fire will serve users well. The extra fire rate will make the MK46 somewhat less accurate, so that should be considered before using this attachment.

The Heartbeat Sensor is one of the worst attachment choices for the MK46. The Heartbeat Sensor is often rendered useless, as Assassin users do not show up on the sensor at all, and Assassin is easily the most popular perk in Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer. On top of that crippling weakness, the Heartbeat Sensor just does not bring much to the table, even when enemies aren't using Assassin. It is best to not use the Heartbeat Sensor on the MK46, especially when considering the embarrassment of riches the LMGs have in other attachments.

Finally, Extended Mags increases the MK46's belt capacity to a mind-numbing 150 round size, and increases the starting ammo loadout to 300 rounds. The MK46 benefits from Extended Mags more than other LMGs do, as the MK46's higher rate of fire makes it burn through ammo more quickly. Still, it can be considered overkill, as the LMGs already have enormous capacities and starting ammo loadouts. Still, it is an attachment without direct penalty, and if users aren't interested in other attachments, Extended Mags is never a bad choice.

Due to a recent update, all light machine guns kill in a minimum of three bullets against a normal opponent unless shooting through cover.

The MK46 used to be a loadout in Infected, where it had the Kick Proficiency. The first infected in this game mode received a MK46 with Extended Mags. This loadout has since been removed from Public matches.

Special Ops[]

The MK46 is available in both Survival and Mission modes.

Mission Mode[]

The MK46 is an alternative weapon in the initial area of several Mission Mode missions, and a MK46 is in the underground armory in "Server Crash".

Survival Mode[]

The MK46 is available in Survival Mode at level 34 and costs $7000. Due to its high rate of fire, low recoil, and high damage, it is a very effective weapon. Sleight of Hand is highly recommended, as with all light machine guns.

Trivia[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

  • At Call of Duty XP, the MK46 used the MG4's HUD icon from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
  • The weapon's serial number is 82183 and its manufacturer's number is 14920.
  • During some Special Ops missions, it will come attached with an ACOG Scope with far less zoom than normal being close to, if not identical, to iron sights zoom level.
  • After the helicopter crashes into the lift in "Dust to Dust", Yuri's MK46 can be seen with every attachment on it.
  • The MK46 has DO4-180 written on the side, unless golden camouflage is equipped.
