The MTAR-X is a bullpup weapon appearing as a submachine gun in Call of Duty: Ghosts and as an assault rifle in Call of Duty Online.
Call of Duty: Ghosts[]
- "Fully automatic. Rifle-class range with large ammo capacity and SMG handling."
- — Description.
Campaign[]
The MTAR-X (called MICROTAR in early stages, and simply TAR-21 within game files) is used by Federation soldiers in the missions "The Hunted" and "Sin City".
In "Ghost Stories", a variant called MTAR-X2 appears during the outer space portion. This version has a white skin similar to that of the ARX-160, more reserve ammunition than the regular MTAR-X, a slightly different reloading animation (the player manually removes the magazine instead of pressing the mag release), and it fires in rapid three-round bursts instead of fully-automatic mode. The MTAR-X2 obtained from the first time only has an ACOG Scope, but all the other ones found in this level also have unique attached Muzzle Brakes that look different from the ones in Multiplayer and Extinction.
Multiplayer[]
The MTAR-X is the most expensive sub-machine gun in the game, costing nine Squad Points.
At any range short of fifteen meters, the MTAR-X will deal forty damage per bullet, needing three shots to kill. Damage decreases linearly until 20.5 meters. At any range past 20.5 meters, the MTAR-X will deal 25 damage per bullet, needing four shots to kill. The MTAR-X has a three shot kill range of 17.2 meters. In Hardcore, the MTAR-X has a one shot kill range of roughly nineteen meters. The MTAR-X deals 30% extra damage on a headshot. This can reduce the number of shots needed to kill by one. However, it requires multiple headshots up close to be relevant, and it doesn't help at the minimum damage value. In Hardcore, a headshot from the MTAR-X is a one shot kill at any range. The MTAR-X has low penetration power.
The MTAR-X fires fully automatically, firing at a rate of 810 RPM.
The MTAR-X has recoil values of 59 to the left, 30 to the right, 59 upwards, and 20 downwards. The MTAR-X has a centerspeed value of 1400.
The MTAR-X allows users to move at 100% of the base movement speed, or strafe at 80% of the base movement speed. The MTAR-X allows users to aim down the sights in 200 milliseconds, and the MTAR-X has good hip-fire spread. The MTAR-X's reload animation is 3.2 seconds long, or 3.93 seconds long on an empty magazine. In either scenario, the user can Reload Cancel the MTAR-X after 1.93 seconds.
The MTAR-X has a magazine capacity of 38 rounds and a starting ammo loadout of 114 rounds.
The MTAR-X has the standard assortment of SMG attachments available to it. All attachments work as expected on the MTAR-X.
The April 22nd patch reduced the MTAR-X's headshot multiplier for balancing purposes. It was lowered from 1.5x to 1.3x, which makes it so that at long distances headshots will not decrease the number of shots to kill.

Extinction[]
The MTAR-X is found in Extinction mode in Point of Contact and Mayday. On both maps, it costs $2000. On Point of Contact, it is in the cabin area, by a fortified platform next to an Electric Fence and a mounted minigun turret that are both near the final hive. On Mayday, it is found in the cargo hold, inside a shipping container near the hive that blocks the insertion point for the UGB chassis. On Mayday, the MTAR-X can also later be found in the lab area on a pipe.
The MTAR-X behaves much like it does in Multiplayer. Its slower fire rate makes its damage output somewhat lacking compared to other SMGs, but it remains effective at longer ranges to a much better degree than the other SMGs do, especially with its soft recoil. The MTAR-X is a decent weapon for use against far away targets because of this. The MTAR-X also features large 40 round magazines - the largest attainable on an SMG in Extinction - allowing for a long firing time. The MTAR-X is very easy to use, especially for those that are not Weapon Specialists, due to its SMG grade handling. However, the MTAR-X's reload speed will not be very fast, especially as On the Go will prevent reload cancelling via sprinting.
On Point of Contact, the MTAR-X is extremely unpopular, as it is not available until the cabin area. The player will have passed four different SMGs before being able to purchase the MTAR-X, so many players that are looking for SMGs to use will have already made up their minds by the time the MTAR-X is available. The problems with buying the MTAR-X so late can be mitigated through Keep Valid Attachments and simply replacing a user's preexisting SMG with the MTAR-X, but this is rarely done as the user will need to re-acquire whatever special ammo type they were previously using. However, those that join a Point of Contact match during the last hive or right before the escape portion will spawn in the crater where the final hive is, and the MTAR-X will be the closest weapon available to them, making the MTAR-X very useful in a situation where the user needs to arm themselves quickly.
On Mayday, the MTAR-X is available much earlier on, on top of the fact that it is accessible from Weapon Lockers and that it can be purchased later on if needed. Mayday also has a much smaller selection of medium-long range weaponry, making the MTAR-X's increased long-range performance all the more notable. The MTAR-X's versatility can be put to much greater use on Mayday due to the reduced amount of options for longer ranged combat, in addition to the MTAR-X providing streamlined performance for CQC.
Safeguard[]
The MTAR-X also appears in Safeguard, and is acquired from Support Drops. It comes with a Holographic Sight.
It is an effective gun overall in all different range types due to its high mobility, controllable recoil and Holographic Sight, but it is still outclassed by the Vepr due to it having a higher magazine capacity.

Trivia[]
Call of Duty: Ghosts[]
- On the side of the MTAR-X, the designation "X95" can be seen.
- In the behind the scenes close-up image of the MTAR-X, it is possible to see "5.45x39" written on the magazine.
- In earlier builds of the game, the weapon was named "MICROTAR".
- ENPEX can be seen written on the iron sights, on the bottom of the rear sight. As well, ENPEX, followed by an obscured word, can be seen on the right of the front sight.
- The MTAR-X's serial number is 511099.
- The white MTAR-X2 variant used in space has "Orbital Space Aeronautics" written on the side.
- The MTAR-X has an unusable flashlight equipped on the right.
- In first-person, the MTAR-X has an unusable sling; this is easily seen while reloading.
- When reloading the MTAR-X in first-person, the magazine is not released and will stay in the weapon even after the player pushes the release button on the weapon, and will teleport to the player's left hand, when inserting a "new" one. This can be seen with a 90 FOV (Field of View) setting applied.
