"Makin Atoll, little more than sand, trees and a small Japanese military base."
— Roebuck

Makin Atoll is an island formation in the Pacific Ocean on the Gilbert Islands. It is featured in Call of Duty: World at War only. It appears in game as a mixture of many wooden huts and heavy jungle, with a large command center (not on multiplayer maps) and beaches.

Call of Duty: World at War[]

Campaign[]

Makin only appears in the first campaign mission of Call of Duty: World at War, "Semper Fi". The player wakes up in a hut on the island and is almost killed by Japanese officers. He is saved by Carlson's Raiders and helps them in their attack against the Japanese military presence on the island. During the mission, many American Marines are seen breaking out of huts and either killing Japanese interrogators or being executed. After seeing Japanese traps and banzai attacks for the first time in game, the Raiders rescue a second squad of Marines before sabotaging an ammunition bunker and escaping the atoll in speed boats. As the squad escapes the charges detonate destroying the bunker and multiple huts.

Multiplayer[]

The multiplayer maps, Makin, Makin Day and Atoll take place here. Shi No Numa also takes some elements from Makin. They are good maps for the X-Ray Vision challenges, due to the abundance of thin wood, are easily penetrated by gunfire.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

Although it is not directly related to Call of Duty: Black Ops, it is where Alex Mason's father fought during World War II. It can be found by retrieving intel in "Operation 40", the first mission in the game.
