Modern Warfare 2: Ghost was a comic book series that was developed by Wildstorm Productions as a companion to the main series game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which was released in the same year. The series had a total of six issues and was written by David Lapham. It also had the art that was done by Kevin West and the cover art was done by Federico Dallocchio.

Plot

The story followed Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley in his experiences prior to the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The series focused on the origins of the character as well as the origins of the skull-like mask that he wore and the other events that took place before he joined Task Force 141.

Dead for a Day

Simon "Ghost" Riley and a few friends are sent on a mission to take a Mexican drug dealer named Manuel Roba down who was expanding into smuggling terrorists into the U.S from Coahuila. They thought that it was going to be easy until their leader, Vernon betrayed them to the enemy.

Dead Life

The constant pain and torture that Riley was enduring at Roba's hands only reminded him about his traumatic childhood. In an effort by Roba to get Riley to kill Vernon, he was brainwashed to imagine the skulls painted on people's faces to remind him about his much hated father, but he still would not kill. Riley was soon left for dead in a coffin underground with the rotting corpse of Vernon.

Dead Would Follow

Riley escaped from his intended grave by painstakingly digging himself out by using Vernon's lower jawbone. He eventually managed to make his way home to Manchester and requested to rejoin the military, intending to continue his hunt for Roba. However, his therapist refused to clear him for duty because of the lingering effects of Roba's brainwashing. Frustrated with his therapist and the state of his mind, Riley reconnected with Kevin Sparks and Marcus Washington from the Roba mission to relax. Soon afterward, it was revealed that Sparks and Washington are still brainwashed and are actually working for Roba. They betrayed Riley and slaughtered his entire family except for his father. When Riley discovered the corpses, he laughed and slipped further into madness.

Riley was framed for the murder of his family, but Riley did not care. Knowing that his father would be killed next, he visited him at the hospital. There, Riley asked him why he laughed when he saw dead people. His father reminded him about the time when his father accidentally killed a whore when he tried paying her with a drug shot. Riley witnessed this, but his father started laughing at how the addict died with a smile and he asked Riley to laugh with him. They both laughed. With this answer, Riley left and once he exited the hospital, he heard a gunshot from the hospital.

Riley followed Sparks and Washington to a military outpost in Bonnington where he killed Washington and brought Sparks back home. At his house, he tortured and made Sparks regret his crime against Riley. Riley switched their tags, shot Sparks in the mouth and burned the house. Riley went back to Coahuila to capture Roba's right hand man at a bar. Riley brought him back to where he was brainwashed which was now abandoned and tortured Roba's current location out of him.

Riley infiltrated Roba's summer house and stole the information on the terrorist that was smuggling from his mainframe. Riley finally confronted Roba in a blazing firefight, but Roba desperately escaped by going out the window. Riley shot him in the back and in the head. Riley set the entire estate on fire and left. When he entered an open field, a helicopter arrived and a man with a Task Force 141 emblem on his shirt disembarked and approached Riley.
