The Mortar Team is a killstreak reward available in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

The Mortar Team strikes three areas on the map, each manually selected via portable radio before the strike is called in, similarly to the Napalm Strike and Attack Helicopter. Once the positions are selected, the announcer will declare the presence of the mortars, and there is a further delay before the mortars hit the marked position, as the mortars can be heard firing during this delay. Once that delay is over, two mortar rounds are fired at each target and the explosions are about seven meters in diameter. It takes a few seconds for the mortars to start firing after the locations are chosen, so anticipation of where enemies will be instead of considering just where they are at the moment will ensure more kills. In objective based games, it is also useful to place the mortar strikes on the objectives, as this is where the enemy will be headed most of the time.

Mortars are capable of sending nearby players into a state of heavy Shellshock, severely slowing down movement and the aim adjustment speed of those affected for a brief period. This can even happen to teammates in Core game types. The explosions kick up a large amount of dirt and can temporarily obscure vision over sightlines.

The Mortar Team can be tricky to use, as the enemy has a lot of time to get away from points they suspect to be hit with Mortars. The Mortar Team's effectiveness heavily increases if the user's team is capable of pinning the opponents into a specific area on the map, as it allows the user to have a better sense of where to position the Mortars.

Mortar Teams can be extremely useful in objective game modes, as a Mortar Team can cover critical points. The Mortar Team can also cover all three flag sites in Domination simultaneously.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified[]

"Call in a precision mortar volley."
— In-game description.

The Mortar Team returns as Mortar Strike in Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, a five killstreak reward. However, it has been altered to target only at one spot, with three rapidly fired mortars. It also appears in the mission "Air Traffic Control".

Compared to Black Ops, the Mortar Strike is much quicker to arrive, as there is a significantly shorter delay between the announcer's warning of the mortars and the mortars actually exploding. Most notably, the delay associated with the sound of the mortars firing is absent. Not as much prediction is needed with the Mortar Strike as a result. The Mortar Strike is also much quicker to end.

Quotes[]

"Mortar coordinates received, firing for effect."
— Said when a team uses the Mortar Team killstreak
"Friendly Mortars inbound."
— Said when a team uses the Mortar Team killstreak (unvailable in Black Ops: Declassified)
"Enemy mortar team spotted! Take cover!"
— Said when enemy team uses the Mortar Team Killstreak

Trivia[]

  • The earlier killstreak menu image appears similar to an Artillery shell from Call of Duty: World at War.
  • Each individual mortar has exactly the same damage and radius as that of a grenade launcher.
  • When called in, three Mortar icons appear on the map, but are not seen.
