Omega Group is an antagonistic faction featured in the Zombies mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Part of the KGB-Spetsnaz, Omega Group was formed by the Soviet Union in an attempt to harness the powers of the Dark Aether to gain an advantage over the United States, by reactivating the cyclotron at an abandoned Nazi facility in Poland.
Background
Formation
Omega Group was formed on August 30th, 1975 to identify, study, and weaponize psychotronic phenomena, ranging from biocommunication, bioinformation and bioenergetics. Members of the organization are comprised of specialists from Spetsgruppas Alpha, Vympel, and Smerch, most of which are tasked with conducting military-based operations, though a select amount of key personnel derived from previous experiences in other experimental research programs are tasked with investigating possible weapon applications from any exoscientific phenomena discovered. While Omega Group’s area of operations span the world, details of their missions are left covert, so much so that both the Soviet people and the rest of the outside world are ignorant of the group’s existence and intentions.
However, as a result of little funding from KGB Chairman Yuri Andropov, none of Omega Group's initial projects were able to advance past the research phase; due to this, the CIA would write off Omega Group in 1981, believing that their projects were abandoned and that the threat they posed was now nominal.
Projekt Endstation
On March 23rd, 1983, US President Ronald Reagan announces the Strategic Defense Initiative, which if implemented, could pose a mortal threat to the Soviet Union. Two days later on March 25th, KGB Chairman Viktor Chebrikov would assign a new unnamed Colonel to Omega Group, with orders to restore Omega Group's readiness to offset the SDI threat. The next day, the Colonel orders the organization's research and development group to search through the KGB archives. On July 15th, after four months of searching, Omega Group member Doctor Aleksandra Valentina would discover two reels of film that were sealed away within an intelligence vault since 1945. The contents of the films, which were recorded at the abandoned Projekt Endstation site in Poland, are immediately flagged for review by the Chairman of State Security. On August 2nd, Chebrikov meets with Chairman Andropov and several other high-ranking officials of the Politburo to screen the contents of the films and to propose the subsequent weaponization of the phenomena logged at the Endstation facility. Two weeks later, Operation Undertaker is authorized, and Omega Group is given command of the operation.
On August 28th, Omega Group secures the Projekt Endstation facility and its surrounding territory, using a cover story about unexploded ordnance to keep the locals away. Doctor Valentina, along with Doctor William Peck, would begin examination of the abandoned German technology throughout the facility, intending to repair the damage done by the Soviets in 1945 who sought to deactivate the facility's cyclotron. After two months, Omega Group are able to restore the facility and the cyclotron to an operational condition, and prepare to reactivate the cyclotron to recreate the gateway to the Dark Aether, hoping to weaponize the vast contents of the realm to combat the West; during this time period, the Colonel would send additional troops to the Endstation facility to assist in the reactivation of the particle accelerator. On November 1st, Omega Group soldiers Orlov and Medvedev would volunteer to restart the cyclotron, and although the two would perish in the attempt, Orlov is successful, which results in the creation of a rift to the Dark Aether, in addition to other smaller rifts across the globe; Valentina would soon detail the success of the mission and the subsequent completion of Operation Undertaker in one of her personal logs.
Omega Outpost 25
Shortly afterward, Omega Group would discover that one of the byproduct dimensional rifts created from the cyclotron's reactivation has formed near the Hướng Hóa District of the Quảng Trị Province in Vietnam. On November 8th, Chairman Chebrikov would form a pact with Vietnamese Chairman Phạm Văn Đồng to establish an Omega Group research facility outside of the district capital of Khe Sanh to study the rift. On November 9th, the project is authorized, and on November 11th, Omega Group would begin construction of their new facility, using the cover story of a recently discovered US chemical weapon being detonated in the vicinity to drive away any unwanted attention.
