Operation Chaos is an optional side mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Plot

A source states that Aldrich is moving south across Colorado and New Mexico in a convoy. Mason and Woods are tasked with intercepting the convoy and kill Robert Aldrich. Wood and Mason are seen inside a UH-1 Iroquois helicopter with the callsign Phoenix 2-4. Another helicopter is seen supporting them with the callsign Phoenix 2-1 along with some soldiers to provide support in the air. Four trucks are seen driving on the highway and Phoenix 2-4 lands in front of the lead truck. Mason and Woods get out the helicopter and engage the Spetnaz operatives protecting Aldrich. The Phoenix 2-1 spots Aldrich fleeing near a gas station. More Spetnaz reinforcements arrive and Phoenix 2-1 spots Aldrich fleeing into a motel.

Mason and Woods battle their way to the motel. Once they arrive at the motel, they head upstairs to a room where Aldrich is staying. The duo breach the door, they eliminate two Spetnaz operatives and Aldrich. Mason then take a photo of Aldrich to confirm that he is dead. As they leave the motel Phoenix 2-1 begins taking fire from Spetnaz operatives and one the operatives fires a RPG at Phoenix 2-1. Phoenix 2-1 crashes and explodes. More Spetnaz soldiers arrive at the motel and attack them. After defeating the Spetnaz at the motel, Phoenix 2-4 sees more truck pulling in off the highway and extraction is too hot. Phoenix 2-4 recommends that extraction will be on top of the gas station. Mason and Woods fight their way to helicopter. They get on board the helicopter and leave the area.

Evidence

Playing the mission without some of the evidence may effect the outcome of shutting down the spy ring.

• Front Page of the Observer - Found in the mission "Redlight, Greenlight" (Unlocked after gathering six photos of intel)
• A Coded Message - obtained in the mission "Nowhere Left to Run"
• Numbers Station Broadcast - Found in the mission "Brick in the Wall" (Can obtained in the building Greta Keller's informant Lukas Richter is be held. On one of the desks.)

Decrypting the Disk with the Spy Ring Information

To decrypt the disk the player must use the newspaper headline to figure out the number code, which will give the player letters of the city and use broadcast numbers of the city (ex. Newark 4,7,1,3). To solve the letter passphrase the player must use the coded message to figure out the pattern of red numbers and blue numbers, which will give the player the missing numbers. The player must use the missing number with the broadcast numbers to find name of the city (ex.Atlanta).
