Payload is an objective-based and limited-time mode featured in Call of Duty: Warzone. The mode pits two team of 20 players fighting over two convoys. Payload was available between July 22nd and August 13th, 2021. The mode returned between August 26th and September 2nd, 2021. It would later return between July 21st and July 28th, 2022 on Rebirth Island.

Overview[]

The mode features 40 players divided into two teams with one team tasked with escorting two convoys on two paths, Path A and Path B, through three checkpoints on sections of the Verdansk and Rebirth Island maps. Each convoy is comprised of two armored trucks fitted with a mounted turret transporting satellite pieces. The other team is tasked to prevent them from securing the checkpoints.

A match starts with a 4 minutes timer; each time a convoy crosses a checkpoint along one of the paths, 2 minutes are added to the timer.

Attack[]

"Escort both trucks through all of the checkpoints"
— Attackers Mission

For the convoys to progress, the attack team needs to stay close to the leading truck while defending themselves against the defending team. Each truck also featured an Armor Reserves. When killed, a player can choose to respawn closer to either path. Upon respawning, the player will receive a temporary Overdrive bonus allowing them to run faster to rejoin the fight.

A match is won once both convoys have reached the last checkpoint in both paths. A small victory animation is displayed with fireworks and planes flying above one of the trucks.

Defense[]

"Stop both trucks from progressing through all of the checkpoints"
— Defenders Mission

To prevent the convoys from progressing, the defense team needs to eliminate any players near the leading truck. The defense players can also stay close to the leading truck forcing the convoy to reverse. Players can also complete contracts to earn rewards against the attacking team. When killed, a player can choose to respawn closer to either path. Unlike the attacking team, players have to wait 10 seconds before being able to respawn.

Along each path, there are 5 spots which can be use to build blocks made of concrete and metal barricades to stop the convoy, forcing the attacking team to blow them out. The defense team can also use two buildables to help them stopping the convoys: a UAV Tower for $2500 acting as a localized UAV, a MG Bunker for $5000 dollars featuring a Shield Turret.

A match is won if any of the two convoys hasn't reached the last checkpoint before the timer runs out. A small victory animation is displayed with one of the truck being destroyed.
