"We are going to bring the fans the Ray Gun Mark II. This is an evolution of the fan favourite, the "Ray Gun". It is a true laser gun. It is gonna go through entire trains of zombies."
Jimmy Zielinski on the Ray Gun Mark II

The Ray Gun Mark II is a wonder weapon featured in Treyarch's Zombies mode, first introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The weapon returned in Call of Duty: Black Ops III in all the remastered maps featured in the Zombies Chronicles map pack, in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in Zombies and Blackout, and in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

The Ray Gun Mark II is the successor and the evolution of the Ray Gun, although, unlike its predecessor, the Ray Gun Mark II fires in three-round bursts with a very small splash range. It also has a very high penetration ability, capable of killing many zombies with one burst. The Ray Gun Mark II is one of the most coveted and rare Wonder Weapons to get from the Mystery Box, where the chances of getting it are usually only 1/3 the chances of any other weapon. Except for Buried, where it has the same chance as any other weapon.

It should be noted that the Ray Gun Mark II has remarkable headshot damage, which is a truly staggering 21.7x damage multiplier, dealing 50,000 damage unupgraded. In the later rounds, it is very worthwhile to headshot zombies, as this multiplier also applies to the Porter's Mark II Ray Gun, making it deal a whopping 100,000 damage if all three blasts hit the head. Unupgraded, this is enough to be a one-burst headshot until round 58, and 70 if upgraded. However, around the late 70's, the damage will start to fall off, and zombies will now require more than one burst to kill; this tends to not be much of a problem when considering the high penetration power and high rate of fire.

A player cannot carry the Ray Gun Mark II and the original Ray Gun at the same time. If the player has the original Ray Gun, it is impossible for them to receive the Ray Gun Mark II from the box, and vice versa.

When Pack-a-Punched via the Pack-a-Punch Machine, it becomes the Porter's Mark II Ray Gun. When Pack-a-Punched, the magazine size doubles, the ammunition total increases and it fires red rays instead of green. Overall damage is doubled as well.

The Ray Gun Mark II returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops III. It can be found in all remastered maps in the Zombies Chronicles map pack.

Like in Black Ops II, a player cannot carry the Ray Gun Mark II and the original Ray Gun at the same time. However, it is possible to receive either Ray Gun from the box if another player already has one, although if one attempts to switch out another weapon except for either Ray Gun it will still replace the equipped Ray Gun.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

The Ray Gun Mark II returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Blackout[]

The Blackout version can be found in the Buried area on the east side of the map. It is an homage to the "Tipping the Ghost" easter egg from the Zombies map itself. It requires the player to throw a Combat Axe onto a dartboard in the Saloon. Doing so will start playing the same song as in the original easter egg on the piano, and open Arthur's cell. There, the Ray Gun Mark II can be grabbed from the chalk question mark. It now has a slower reload animation compared to the previous versions of the Mark II.

Zombies[]

The Ray Gun Mark II is available in the Mystery Box for 950 points on Blood of the DeadClassifiedAlpha Omega and Tag der Toten. In Alpha Omega, a single free Pack-a-Punched one can be obtained during Electromagnetic Awakening Party.

"I think you're going to find the Ray Gun Mark II-V is great for crowd control."
Rushmore in Alpha Omega

The Ray Gun Mark II-V is a wonder weapon found in the Zombies map Alpha Omega. It shoots an electric beam that can deal extremely high damage to the head and has the ability to stun 4 enemies at once. It also regenerates ammunition over time when not in use, even while stowed, much like the Paralyzer.

How to obtain it:

  1. Pick up a Ray Gun Mk. II Frame.
  2. Have a Pack-a-Punch'd weapon with the Kill-O-Watt alternate ammo type.
  3. Head down to the Generators room, a panel on one of the three circuit boxes will emit a yellow smoke. Shoot the panel with Kill-O-Watt to remove it and collect the canister that's inside.
  4. Now, one of the five telephone poles around the town will start emitting yellow sparks. Find the one that is emitting them and shoot it with Kill-O-Watt until it glows. Repeat this process with the remaining poles and an electric current will be created, allowing a generator near the Yellow House to receive additional power.
  5. Place the canister on the generator to activate a soul circle. Kill enemies while staying on the circle to charge it.
  6. Once the canister has been charged, take it and use the Assembly Kit to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-V.

"The Ray Gun Mark II-X. If you're a fan of full-auto rapid-fire, this is the gun for you."
Rushmore in Alpha Omega

The Ray Gun Mark II-X is a wonder weapon found in the Blackout map Alcatraz and the Zombies map Alpha Omega. It is a variant that can fire in full-auto mode with medium accuracy, but its rounds lack the ability to penetrate enemies. It's advisable to fire in bursts or single-handedly to conserve ammo.

When upgraded, it becomes dual wield, giving it increased damage output but giving it much more ammo consumption in return alongside the removal of the use of sights.

How to obtain it in Alpha Omega:

  1. Pick up a Ray Gun Mk. II Frame.
  2. Have a Pack-a-Punch'd weapon with the Cryofreeze alternate ammo type.
  3. One of three filing cabinets will emit a blue smoke and is the one that contains the canister. These locations are: The garage of the Operations building, near the backdoor of the APD Interrogation, or in the Prisoner Holding building. Shoot the cabinet with Cryofreeze to open it and collect the canister.
  4. Now Rushmore will give the player the task of collecting samples from three scientists. These scientists appear as zombies surrounded by a blue mist and are often found in the bunker. You will need to freeze them with Cryofreeze and finish them off with a melee attack, causing them to drop a sample on the ground to be pick up. Repeat this with the others until all 3 are obtained.
  5. Once all samples have been obtained, head down to the APD Control room and find a broken 115 container to place the canister in, this will activate a soul circle. Kill enemies while staying within the circle to charge the canister.
  6. Once the canister has been charged, take it and use the Assembly Kit to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-X.

"In case you're wondering, that Ray Gun Mark II-Y fires a rather large explosive. Nice for taking out several targets at once."
Rushmore in Alpha Omega

The Ray Gun Mark II-Y is a wonder weapon found in the Blackout map Alcatraz and the Zombies map Alpha Omega . has explosive rounds (which don't splash damage the player) and a charge shot that causes a wider area of effect. It is very effective at protecting the player from being surrounded, but doesn't carry much ammo.

On lower rounds, charge shots aren't advised since single shots can one shot huge groups decently up in the rounds and charge shots spend lots of precious ammo.

How to obtain it in Alpha Omega:

  1. Pick up a Ray Gun Mk. II Frame.
  2. Obtain the Telepads.
  3. Have a Pack-a-Punch'd weapon with the Brain Rot alternate ammo type.
  4. A pile of dirt emitting a green mist can be found in one of three locations: Behind the Yellow House next to the back door, the backyard of the Green House near the bunker entrance, or on the side of Center Street nearest to Yellow House. Spawn a Brain Rot Zombie near the active green-glowing pile to obtain the canister.
  5. An orange orb will reveal itself and then move quickly to one of the teleporter pads. Locate it and attack the orb with any weapon, causing it to move to a new teleporter pad which must be found. Place down the first Telepad on the pad before the next step.
  6. Find the next location of the orb and attack it again. Place the second Telepad on the pad and follow the orb through the teleporter.
  7. Once the player has teleported back to the first to the position, the orb will travel to the Storage Room. Find the orb and place the Canister in it, spawning a soul circle.
  8. Stay within the circle and kill enemies to charge the Canister.
  9. Once the canister has been charged, take it and use the Assembly Kit to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-Y.

"Hot stuff, right? The Ray Gun Mark II-Z fires a scatter-shot blast. Just the thing for hitting a wide group with a single pull of the trigger."
Rushmore in Alpha Omega

The Ray Gun Mark II-Z is a wonder weapon found in the Blackout map Alcatraz and the Zombies map Alpha Omega. It's essentially a laser shotgun that passes through multiple enemies in a short-mid range. When upgraded via Pack-A-Punch, it gains a fully automatic fire rate with a high rate of fire.

How to obtain it in Alpha Omega:

  1. Pick up a Ray Gun Mk. II Frame.
  2. Have a Pack-a-Punch'd weapon with the Fire Bomb alternate ammo type.
  3. There are three possible cabinet locations the Canister can be found: The kitchen of the Green House or Yellow House, or in the Diner. The active cabinet will have orange gas coming out of it. Shoot it with a weapon that has Fire Bomb on it to reveal a Canister to be picked up.
  4. One of three houses will now have purple fire coming out of its chimney. The houses are Yellow House, the Transfusion House, and the Operations house. The player must then throw a Frag Grenade, Wraith Fire, or Monkey Bomb into the top of the chimney. If done correctly there should be a purple fire in the fireplace inside the house.
  5. Place the canister into the fireplace to activate a soul circle. Stay on the circle and kill enemies to charge the Canister.
  6. Once the canister has been charged, take it and use the Assembly Kit to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-Z.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6[]

"The successor to the Ray Gun expands your Horizons for awe-inspiring carnage with three new upgrades. Variety is the spice of death."
— In-game description

The Ray Gun Mark II returns within the Dark Aether Saga with the release of Shattered Veil. Initially, the Ray Gun Mark II was exclusive to Shattered Veil, but was added to all other maps as part of the Season Three Reloaded update.

The Ray Gun Mark II functions much like it's older counterparts, firing powerful "rays" in a three round burst, and can be Pack-a-Punched. The Ray Gun Mark II also has three new upgrade paths available in Shattered Veil. These upgrade paths are key components of the Main Quest. The upgrade paths are not available outside Shattered Veil, all other maps only get the base Ray Gun Mark II. As in previous games, the Mark II cannot be used in conjunction with the original Ray Gun, picking one up will drop the other immediately.

The Ray Gun Mark II is the first wonder weapon in the Dark Aether storyline to be salvaged directly from the Dark Aether itself, as all other weapons have been original creations of the universes factions or their origins are unknown, even when they were identical to previously seen Aether Weapons. S.A.M mentions when first obtaining the Ray Gun Mark II that Richtofen sent a team into the Dark Aether to discover it's origins, but they never returned.

Free Ray Gun Mark II[]

A free Ray Gun Mark II can be acquired in Shattered Veil through the following steps:

  1. Once Round 10 has been hit, a lab coated zombie with purple eyes will begin to spawn in the Mainframe Chamber that, when killed, will drop a floppy disk, which the player must pick up.
  2. In the East Foyer, in the room with a staircase is a computer which the player must interact with, which will cause the fax machine to slowly print out a document. Several Vermin will spawn during this time. Once the fax machine has finished, the player must interact with the document to read it, which will contain a four letter word which must be memorized. The word will be MOTH, CRAB, YETI or WORM.
  3. In the Nursery, the player can find a black board with multiple letters written on it. The letters are divided up into groups.
  4. The players task is to convert the word on the fax into a four digit code.
    1. As an example, if "WORM" is the word, and the letter "W" is in a group with four other letters, then the first number is 5. Likewise, if "O" is in a group by itself, then the second number is 1, if "R" is in the same group as "W", then the third number is also 5 etc.
  5. Once successfully translated, the player must then head to the Service Tunnel, where they'll find an Elite Doppelghast locked in a glass cage. The player must interact with the keypad next to it and input the number code that they've acquired to release it, after which they must defeat it (several Toxic Zombies will also spawn when the door is opened). Once defeated, it'll leave behind a severed arm, which the player must pick up.
  6. The player must then enter the armory at the Supply Depot, where they'll find the Ray Gun Mark II locked in a glass case. The player must interact with the hand scanner next to it, which will cause the case to unlock and allow them to pick it up.

Upgrade Canisters[]

All three Mark II upgrades require the use of an empty canister as part of their upgrade quest. Each method can only be done one time, but three canisters can be acquired in every play through.

  • Shoot one of the large blue crystals with the Ray Gun Mark II to drop the Empty Canister. While it's random which one it will be, one of these will drop the empty canister:
    • On the roof of the South West Balcony.
    • In the Service Tunnel.
    • In the Conservatory.
    • In the East Foyer.
  • Throw a LT53 Kazimir in front of the window below Double Tap Root Beer in Rear Patio to drag the Empty Canister out.
    • A free LT53 Kazimir can be obtained from one of the corpses in Service Tunnel that can be found near the Der Wunderfizz spawn location.
  • On the left side of the Crafting Table in the Mainframe Chamber, there will be a massive tube like container with the letter A or B written next to it. Outside of the Service Tunnel, left of the chamber where the Doppelghast was located, several pipes and valves can be seen on a wall. Using Combat Axes, hit the non-leaking valve and the valve next to the corresponding letter. The player should hear a squeaking noise if successful. Return to the container and destroy it with an explosive to drop the Empty Canister.
    • Three free Combat Axes can be acquired, with one at the spawn in Garden Pond, one on a tray in Security Overlook, and last under the bed in Nursery.

Elemental Variants[]

  • Ray Gun Mark II-W
  • Ray Gun Mark II-P
  • Ray Gun Mark II-R

The Ray Gun Mark II-W is a wonder weapon found in the Zombies map Shattered Veil. While all Ray Gun Mark II variants are fully automatic, The Ray Gun Mark II-W is designed to behave like a Submachine Gun, with the fastest fire rate of all the variants while still hitting hard and with moderate recoil. Rapid kills with the Mark II-W will spawn a patch of Wraith Fire, which will persist on the ground and kill any zombies that walk through it. When Pack-A-Punched, it becomes the Ray Gun Mark II-Wraithfire, gaining higher damage and a larger amount of reserve ammunition. The Mark II-W's "rays" and general color scheme are blue.

How to Build

  1. Obtain an Empty Canister
  2. Bring the Empty Canister to Shem's Henge and place it in the device in front of Speed Cola. This will spawn an Abomination at the center of the henge.
  3. Make the Abomination beam the three small rocks of the henge to make them glow blue. Then have it charge at the stones to make them float.
    1. If for whatever reason the Abomination is killed or leaves the henge area, it can be respawned by interacting with the device holding the empty canister.
  4. Once all three stones are floating, a lockdown sequence will occur and the Abomination will disappear. Multiple Vermin will spawn and all enemies will attempt to sacrifice themselves in the center of the Henge. Players must defend the Henge until the progress bar reaches 100%.
    1. When enemies sacrifice themselves, it will lower the percentage. Players will fail the step if progress ever reaches 0%. If players fail, they can restart the lockdown by interacting with the device holding the canister.
  5. If done correctly, the Empty Canister will turn into the Explosive Canister. Bring it to the workbench in the Supply Depot to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-W.

The Ray Gun Mark II-P is a wonder weapon found in the Zombies map Shattered Veil. It is functions similarly to a shotgun, with pellet spread and high stopping power, and is fully automatic with a slow rate of fire. When a Zombie is killed with the Mark II-P, there is a chance it will spawn a purple sigil which will grant any player standing in it invulnerability to all damage until it disappears. When Pack-A-Punched, it becomes the Ray Gun Mark II-Preservation, and gains higher damage and a larger amount of reserve ammo. The Mark II-P's projectiles and general color scheme is purple.

How to Build

  1. Obtain an Empty Canister
  2. Obtain two Reflectors. The Reflectors are generally difficult to see, but if the player runs up to their location and holds "interact" they shouldn't have an issue retrieving them.
    1. One can be found in the fountain in the Conservatory.
    2. One can be found in the fountain on the South West Balcony.
  3. Obtain the Essence Bomb by destroying one of the Project Janus breakable wooden boxes found around the map. The Essence Bomb will drop after the 8th wooden box is destroyed.
  4. Use the Essence Bomb on the rubble left of the Level III Armor in Service Tunnel. This will lead to the Serpent Mound. Take note of the Doppelghast statues around the room, they will be important in a moment.
  5. Place the Empty Canister in the device inside the room. This will active a blue crystal shooting a beam.
  6. Around the room there are three poles that the reflectors can be placed on. The players goal is to use the reflectors and direct the beams into each subsequent Doppelghast statue.
  7. Place a reflector on the pole the beam is firing into. Now, melee the reflector until the beam is reflecting into the Doppelghast statue to the left of the Aether Worm statue. Once this is done, melee the crystal firing the beam. This will shoot lighting across the beam, awakening the Doppelghast. Kill it.
  8. Now place a reflector on the pole in the back of the room behind the Aether Worm statue. Melee the two reflectors until the beam is connected to the Doppelghast by the entrance to the Serpent Mound. Melee the crystal and kill the Doppelghast. Reflectors on the poles to guide the beam towards the Doppleghast statues.
  9. Remove the reflector from the second pole. There will be an entrance to a cave on the right of the room. Enter the cave and walk up the hill and place the reflector on the pole at the top of this hill. Melee the two reflectors until the beam is shining into the final Doppelghast statue. Melee the crystal, and kill the Doppelghast.
    1. This final Doppelghast will be an HVT, it will have significantly more health than the prior two.
  10. Return to the device to obtain the Light Canister.
  11. Bring the Light Canister to the workbench in the Director's Quarters to craft the Ray Gun Mark II-P.

Gallery

The Ray Gun Mark II-R is a wonder weapon found in the Zombies map Shattered Veil. It functions similarly to a Marksman Rifle, firing a single shot with a slow rate of fire which can penetrate zombies and has significantly higher damage per round than the other Mark II variants. While it is fully automatic, it has the slowest rate of fire of all the Mark II variants. The Mark II-R has a chance to cause a toxic explosion on a kill, which can inflict area-of-effect damage to anything caught in the radius of the blast and leaves a pool of rot on the ground that will damage or kill enemies that walk through it. When Pack-A-Punched, it becomes the Ray Gun Mark II-Rot Blight, increasing it's damage and ammo reserves. The Mark II-R's color scheme is Yellow.

How to Obtain

  1. Obtain an Empty Canister
  2. Collect 4 Plant Seed by destroying the spore growth found around the map. To obtain a Plant Seed, use either explosives (Grenades, base Ray Gun Mark II, Launchers) or fire (Napalm Burst, Molotovs). If a scream is heard, the Plant Seed is guaranteed to drop after a short time.
  3. Spore Locations:
    1. In West Balcony
    2. In South West Balcony
    3. Right of Ammo Box in Rear Patio
    4. Left of the mansion entrance in Motor Court
    5. Left of the Crafting Table in Motor Court
    6. Near the fountain in Conservatory
    7. Against the bridge in Garden Pond
    8. Left of the stone bench in Garden Pond
    9. In Shem's Henge
  4. Place the Empty Canister in the device in the Conservatory.
  5. Place a Plant Steed in one of the planters in the Conservatory and defend it until it grows. Repeat the process three more times.
  6. Once all four plants have grown, return to the device and retrieve the Toxic Canister.
  7. Bring the Toxic Canister to the workbench in Garden Pond and craft the Ray Gun Mark II-R

Trivia[]

General[]

  • In first-person, the weapon is held like a submachine gun, but in third-person, it is held like a pistol. In Black Ops 4, it is held with one hand in Blackout, and two hands in Zombies.
  • Due to the different type of rounds used, no significant splash damage is made by the impacting of the gun's blasts. The Ray Gun Mark II's shots can also penetrate through multiple zombies at once, whereas the original Ray Gun's shots stop upon contact. The penetration effect seems to stop at about 4 zombies.
    • However, there is in fact a minor splash damage with a very small radius, which can damage the player if they shoot an adjacent target.
  • While its predecessor is reloaded from the front of the weapon, the Ray Gun Mark II is reloaded from the back. They both use the same "Cold cell" ammunition, however.
  • It is one of the few wonder weapons that is affected by Double Tap Root Beer. The rate of fire within each burst is shortened, and the burst delay is also shortened. However, the damage and number of shots fired is unaffected, like all other wonder weapons.
  • Much like its predecessor, alongside the Mustang and Sally; and the Boomhilda, the player is pushed back when firing the weapon. Due to its nature of firing in bursts, it effectively has the largest push distance.
  • The magazine size of the weapon is 21 rounds and there are 162 in reserve. However, 162 is not divisible by 21, leaving the player with seven full magazines and another with 15 shots (5 bursts).
  • When looking down the sights, the three lines inside the sight appear to be floating.
    • It's worth noting that those three lines are similar to the Treyarch logo.
  • The Mark II-W and Mark II-P in Shattered Veil are very similar to the Mark II-X and Mark-Y in Alpha Omega, respectively. They share the same color schemes and basic functions despite being different models. They do differ in their additional functionality though.
    • The Mark II-X has a higher rate of fire than the Mark II-W. The II-X also becomes dual wielded when upgrade, where as the II-W can create Wraith Fire on kills.
    • The Mark II-Y has a wider spread and longer range than the Mark II-P. It is also fully automatic when Pack-A-Punched. Conversely, the Mark II-P is able to spawn it's invulnerability sigil.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

  • In all maps except Buried and Borough, only one player can obtain the weapon.
  • In patch 1.12, the Ray Gun Mark II was unintentionally added to all maps prior to its official launch (several days prior to Vengeance's release for Xbox 360), but was later removed swiftly via a hotfix.
  • The chance of this weapon appearing in the box varies by which map is played.
  • The chance of getting it outside of Buried (1/3 chance of other weapons) makes it the rarest weapon overall to get in the Mystery Box.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III[]

  • When firing, a thin bolt of green (red if Pack-a-Punched) electricity forms between two prongs extending from the back of the weapon, just above the magazine.
  • Deadshot Daiquiri's aim assist doesn't lock to the head with the Ray Gun Mark II.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

  • One of the Pack-a-Punch camouflages on the map Classified depicts a red blueprint of the Ray Gun Mark II.
  • In Blackout, the Ray Gun Mark II's lights are blue as opposed to the normal green.
    • Furthermore, the blasts fired from the weapon are a variation of the normal Ray Gun's, albeit in a blue color. The firing sound is also the same as the aforementioned weapon.
    • The Blackout version oddly reuses the same animation set as with the Ray Gun. It can even be inspected (sharing the same animation), whereas the other variations lack the ability to be inspected.
  • In Alpha Omega, none of the Mark II variants have Pack a Punch camos, not even the base variant.
  • The Mark II now has sounds from the original Ray Gun's reloading sound added on top of it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6[]

  • If a player is holding either the Ray Gun Mark II or the original Ray Gun and attempts to pick up the other, they will immediately drop whichever weapon they were holding, regardless if it's equipped or not. This can be most easily seen by completing the quest for a free Ray Gun Mark II in Shattered Veil.
    • Despite the game preventing their dual use, whatever weapon the player isn't carrying can still be offered as a reward from the Mystery Box, Lockers, and S.A.M, unlike in previous games.
