The Remington 870 MCS is a pump-action shotgun that appears in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. It was also cut from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

"Pump action shotgun. Strong damage and range."
— Description.

Campaign[]

The Remington 870 MCS is available for use upon completing "Fallen Angel", though it can only be obtained when customizing the loadout. DeFalco also uses this weapon in the intro cutscene of this mission. In the campaign it is simply referred to as R870 MCS.

Multiplayer[]

The Remington 870 MCS is the first shotgun to be unlocked at Level 4.

The Remington 870 MCS is a high damage, good-range shotgun. The Remington 870 MCS fires eight pellets per shot. At any range short of 7.5 meters, the Remington 870 MCS will deal fifty damage per pellet, needing just two of the eight pellets in the shot to hit to secure a kill. Unlike most other weapons, the Remington 870 MCS will have a linear damage drop-off up to 11.25 meters. At any distance between 11.25 and 16.25 meters, the Remington 870 MCS will deal just ten damage per pellet, needing ten pellets to kill an enemy, more than a single shot's worth of pellets. The Remington 870 MCS has a three pellet kill range of nine meters, a four pellet kill range of 9.8 meters, and a five pellet kill range of 10.3 meters. In Hardcore, the Remington 870 MCS has a one pellet kill range of roughly 9.25 meters. The Remington 870 MCS has the best one-shot kill capability of any pellet-firing shotgun, but the Remington 870 MCS' one shot kill performance is highly inconsistent. Once the enemy is more than eleven meters away, it is a certainty that the user will need at least two shots to kill an enemy, but if the enemy is closer than nine meters away, the Remington 870 MCS can accrue one shot kills very easily. Like other pellet-firing shotguns, the Remington 870 MCS has no body multipliers at all, and the Remington 870 MCS cannot shoot through cover, only capable of dealing damage through breakable glass.

The Remington 870 MCS' fire rate is low. Being pump-action, It can only fire up to 80 RPM. Users will instantly be in trouble if they miss the one shot kill.

The Remington 870 MCS' accuracy is average for a shotgun. The iron sights are clear, and the Remington 870 MCS' hip-fire spread is a bit on the large side, but the spread tightens up significantly when aiming down the sight. Aiming down the sight makes the Remington 870 MCS' shot spread very precise, even tighter than a handgun with a Laser Sight. Aiming down the sight, unlike in previous games, is a tool the user can consistently use to assist in accuracy.

The Remington 870 MCS' handling traits are decent enough for a shotgun. The Remington 870 MCS allows users to move at 100% of the base movement speed, and strafe at 80% of the base movement speed. Not only will the Remington 870 MCS encourage aiming, it will not stifle the user's movement speed when aiming down the sight, unlike many shotguns in previous and future Call of Duty games. The Remington 870 MCS allows users to aim down the sight in 250 milliseconds. Sadly, the Remington 870 MCS is reloaded shell-by-shell, which in turn will make reloads lengthy. The first shell is reloaded in one second, and subsequent shells take 0.55 seconds to reload, with an ending animation that is 0.85 seconds long. In total, it can take up to 5.7 seconds to completely reload the entire tube. With a proper Reload Cancel, users can perform partial top-ups, and can shorten a full-tube reload to just 4.9 seconds. Users will constantly have to manage the Remington 870 MCS' tube magazine when using it for extended periods of time.

The Remington 870 MCS is saddled with the lowest shell capacity in its class, holding eight rounds in a magazine. This also gives the Remington 870 MCS the smallest starting ammo loadout in its class at 32 rounds. Although both values are worst in-class, it's important to remember that the Remington 870 MCS will need far fewer shells for combat than the S12 and M1216. For a pump-action weapon, these shell capacity and starting ammo loadout values are satisfactory.

The Remington 870 MCS has the standard assortment of shotgun attachments on offer. The Reflex Sight is little more than decoration on the Remington 870 MCS. The iron sights are very clear and the Reflex Sight grants no tactical advantage. It's best to ignore it.

The Long Barrel is among one of the most important attachments on the Remington 870 MCS. It gives the Remington 870 MCS sixteen percent longer range total, and it makes the Remington 870 MCS more reliable at accruing one shot kills. The Remington 870 MCS is very reliant on getting one shot kills, so this attachment is a major help in that regard. It is an extremely common attachment to see paired with the Remington 870 MCS.

Fast Mag allows the user to reload two shells at a time, effectively cutting the reload time in half. The user will only need to load four shells to fully reload the Remington 870 MCS, reducing the maximum total reload time to 4.05 seconds, and a full reload using a reload cancel will take just 3.2 seconds. Fast Mag will make reloading the Remington 870 MCS much less painful. Extended Clip increases the Remington 870 MCS' shell capacity to eleven and increases the starting ammo loadout to 44 rounds total. However, this will make reloads much longer, and although the Remington 870 MCS has the lowest in-class shell capacity and starting ammo loadout, they are by no means weaknesses as it pertains to the Remington 870 MCS and they do not need to be addressed.

The Laser Sight will make the Remington 870 MCS' hip-fire spread 37.5% tighter. When moving, this will give the Remington 870 MCS a hip-fire size similar to that of a PDW-57 or MSMC when on the move. For users that do not prefer to use the aim down sight function with the shotguns, this attachment is virtually mandatory, as it will make the shotgun far more consistent when shooting from the hip. For those that consistently use the aim down sight function with shotguns, however, this attachment is much less valuable, but still helps. Depending on the user's playstyle preference, this attachment can be extremely important.

The Adjustable Stock will allow the user to strafe at 88% of the base movement speed, an 8% increase from the default. The movement speed benefit the Stock provides for shotguns is negligible, especially since shotguns usually only use the aim down sight function as a means to tighten the shot spread right before firing. The Adjustable Stock is one of the less useful attachment options on the Remington 870 MCS as a result.

The Suppressor is an extremely risky attachment. Although it confers valuable stealth benefits and only reduces range by ten percent, the Remington 870 MCS is extremely reliant on said range to be effective, as the Remington 870 MCS needs to kill in as few shots as possible. The Suppressor's range penalty clashes badly with the Remington 870 MCS' intended purpose. Although the range penalty is minor, a range penalty is the last thing a shotgun can afford. For those that can deal with the reduced range, the stealth bonus is extremely valuable and will buy the user much more time in situations where they are targeting multiple enemies that may not exactly know where the user is.

The Quickdraw Handle reduces the aim down sight time to 150 milliseconds. This makes aiming significantly quicker. For those that make frequent use of the aim down sight function on shotguns, this attachment can be very helpful, but those who tend to fire mostly from the hip will tend to ignore this attachment.

The Millimeter Scanner provides an optical attachment that allows the user to see static enemies through surfaces up to a certain distance. The user can use this functionality to scope out a building they may be entering, but there are better attachments on offer, especially since the Millimeter Scanner is inconsistent and is also countered entirely by Cold Blooded.

Overall, the Remington 870 MCS is the strongest pellet-firing shotgun on offer. It is very popular in Multiplayer due to its per-shot power making it very reliable at picking up one shot kills. This comes at the expense of fire rate, as unlike the other pellet-firing shotguns the game has on offer, the Remington 870 MCS gives significantly less room for user error and bad luck. The Remington 870 MCS is a polarizing weapon by design due to its pump-action nature. Despite this, the Remington 870 MCS is among the most used shotguns in Multiplayer, and has endured as one of the more popular overall weapons in the game.

Zombies[]

The Remington 870 MCS appears as a wall weapon in TranZit (in the barn immediately to the left), Bus Depot (outside of the building), Nuketown Zombies (in the living room of the yellow house), Die Rise (on the lowest floor of the building with the power switch, in the hallway with a single elevator), and Buried (in the room with Quick Revive) for 1500 points.

In Mob of the Dead, it costs 1200 points and has two locations: in the shower by the Afterlife opposite of the laundry machine, and one by the entrance to the citadel tunnel from the cell block. In Cell Block, it is available through the Mystery Box. In Origins, it can be found off the wall in three locations: in the trenches near the spawn room, near the church close to generator 6, in the Lightning tunnel near generator 5, or it can be dug up with a shovel. When purchased it costs 900 points.

Its performance is similar to the M1897 Trench Gun and Stakeout, though it is unable to hit as many zombies due to it only firing four pellets per shell. It has a six shell capacity, as opposed to its campaign/multiplayer counterpart's eight shell capacity. This is in keeping with the M1987 Trench Gun's and Stakeout's capacity. Double Tap Root Beer is essential, as it effectively doubles the Remington's damage and increases the rate of fire. However, without Double Tap, one will find themselves struggling to kill zombies without aiming down the sights or moving very close to the target, due to the R870's low pellet-per-shell ratio. This key weakness keeps it from being effective against zombies past round ten.

Once Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Refitted-870 Mechanical Cranium Sequencer and has a very high one-hit-kill potential at close range in addition to a much faster pump-action and tighter hip-fire spread. The Remington 870 MCS can be Pack-a-Punched multiple times to cycle between a Reflex Sight or iron sights. When killed, zombies explode into a red mist, similar to the effect produced by the Wave Gun, albeit without the preceding levitation into the air.
