An Ammo Crate is an interactive object seen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Campaign

Ammo crates can be found throughout the campaign most notably in levels such as "Exodus" where they were airdropped from planes. They give the player ammo, up to the absolute full count. This also includes stun, flash, smoke, and frag grenades. The ammo crate will also replenish used ammunition currently in the magazine.

Multiplayer

An Ammo Crate can be obtained from either the Care Package or the Emergency Airdrop killstreak rewards. It is not unlockable from the killstreak menu. There is around a 14% chance of getting an ammo crate from a care package and a 40% chance of getting an ammo crate as one of the four emergency airdrop packages. The Ammo Crate gives max ammo for both guns and refills equipment and special grenades. The pickup symbol for the ammo crate is the word AMMO on top of an upside down triangle.

Ammo crates can sometimes save players lives, and possibly even helping them get a tactical nuke in the right times. If a player has Sleight of Hand, they only have 3 magazines at the start of the game. If they achieve a care package and are awarded ammo when they had little ammo left, they will have full ammo which can in turn save their lives.

Most of the time pepole frown apon ammo crates from care packages/emergency airdrops because an AC-130, Chopper Gunner, EMP, Pavelow, etc, would have be more effective on the enemy.

Tactics

  • Ammo crates can make good decoys to bait enemy players.
  • Ammo crates are typically considered to be the worst possible rewards from care packages.
  • A player cannot obtain an emblem for the ammo crate.
  • If a player gives up their ammo drop no points are awarded for share package
  • If a player's inventory is completely full, picking up an Ammo Crate is a complete waste; it is better to leave the crate for a team-mate.
  • In campaign, sit next to an ammo crate for cover, and throw grenades. When you run out of grenades, simply restock and repeat until the enemy resistance has been severely softened.
  • Sometimes during missions, there will be ammo crates separated every 10 or so metres from each other. If you run or sprint while shooting to the closest possible ammo crate, you can restock on ammo and continue this.
  • Ammo crates can sometimes be disadvantageous because enemies can sometimes hide behind them out of your sight until its too late. Use caution when performing the tactic above.

Trivia

  • If you have a Tactical Insertion in use, and a Care Package is called in, the chance of an Ammo Crate decreases to around 0.5%, as there could be multiple Insertions.
  • Players use Ammo Crates to boost; as part of an Emergency Airdrop, there is a 40% chance of a Crate, and it gives 150+ points, for the "Share Package" challenge.
