The SOFLAM is equipment that is found in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]
It is used by Derek "Frost" Westbrook in mission "Scorched Earth" to mark T-90 tanks for the friendly A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Call of Duty: Ghosts[]
SOFLAM appears in Call of Duty: Ghosts mode Extinction, where it is used to call in TAC System. It can be found in a search pile or as a rare drop from a random supplies box.
The SOFLAM is a three-use weapon that cannot be reloaded or supplied additional ammo. After it has called in its third strike, it is discarded, and the user will need to pick up another SOFLAM from a Search Pile or Random Supplies drop to use it again. Once the user indicates a target, a shot is consumed, and the user cannot "fire" again until the explosive from the previous shot has hit its target.
SOFLAMs are at their most useful against static targets. The best use case is on Point of Contact against a barrier hive. Since it is a static target with a huge health bar, the SOFLAM will provide valuable assistance in draining the hive's health. It can even be used to trigger a large pool of Propane Tanks on the hive to explode, further enhancing burst damage.
It can also be very effective for use when the spawn point of one or more targets is visible and can be attacked. For instance, Seekers spawning out of a meteor make for a great target. The user can even take aim at the wall of the meteor to ensure that the explosive strikes right near that surface, virtually right where Seekers would emerge. Rhinos and Mammoths, despite needing more than one blast to kill, will be stuck unearthing themselves for an extended period of time, making the SOFLAM effective at softening them up whilst they unearth themselves.
In terms of its effectiveness against Cryptids, it isn't effective against heavy targets like Gargoyles, Rhinos, Mammoths, and Phantoms, needing multiple blasts to secure a kill on them. It is better used against large groups of lighter targets. As such, it's most effective in the earlier stages of the game, where Scouts and Hunters are more common.
SOFLAMs are tougher to use at distance due to the mobile nature of most cryptids. As such, it is key to use the SOFLAM in situations where a hit is guaranteed, or at least highly likely. Using a Flare or a Tank Upgrade can guarantee a bunch of Cryptids converge onto one position to ensure hit probability. It is even feasible to summon a SOFLAM blast on one's own position, as the splash damage incurred from the SOFLAM blast is minimal.
SOFLAMs have restrictions on where they can summon a strike, as the target cannot be obstructed by an overhead structure, like a ceiling or rock formation. As such, interior areas of Exodus and most of the facility area of Nightfall will not permit SOFLAM usage.
