Biography[]
Not much is known about her past, but being the daughter of Templar, it's likely she is trained in use of firearms as well as hand-to-hand combat.
First appearing as a child, Sophia is rescued by Templar from Stansfield and the Dark Covenant in Alaska. Even though she says that she can repel the enemy soldiers as she was taught to, Templar declares that this life isn't for her and that once he completes his mission, he will bring her back to Paris to lead normal lives.
However, this never came to be true, as Sophia later witnesses her father be betrayed and murdered by Ghost. She is mostly unharmed, and then tries to get Templar on his feet to bring her to Paris. Unfortunately, Templar is too badly wounded to continue, and collapses midway. In his final moments, Templar tells Sophia to be better than him and that he loves her always, before passing away in Sophia's arms.
Several years later, Sophia, having grown to an adult, is shown to have allied herself with Makarov and Wraith. The group meets up with Nyx, Kryptis and a man named Vachon. Sophia notes that her father would be pissed if he learned that Kryptis was still alive.
Later, when Makarov and Vachon have their meeting, Kryptis taunts Sophia about wearing Templar's mask on her belt, to which she rebukes that she wears it remind herself that masks don't stop bullets. Wraith tries to calm her down, but Kryptis laughs it off, which infuriates Sophia. She later tells Wraith that Kryptis isn't impressive up close, to which she replies that Sophia isn't either but it doesn't make her less dangerous. They later overhear radio chatter from Nyx's end, that "Zurich has been compromised". Sophia and Wraith attack Kryptis, but they don't get far as Nyx singlehandedly defeats Sophia, with Kryptis helping Nyx knock out Wraith.
Despite being defeated, Sophia reappears in the Caucasus with Wraith and Makarov, this time in her Errant Knight uniform. Makarov delightedly announces that Atlas Corporation has agreed to meet with him, at a location of his choosing. Sophia believes it's a trap no matter what location he chooses, as does Wraith. Makarov then gives some advice to Sophia: that he has made Atlas afraid, when one forces their enemy to act out of fear, one forces them to act before they're prepared, and those who aren't prepared make mistakes, and by agreeing to meet Makarov, Atlas has made their first mistake.
Some time later, Sophia and Makarov's group infiltrate New Vision City, hiding out in a shipping container that is moved into a warehouse. Once inside, Sophia breaks through the container and reports clear. When Makarov shoots Montpierre dead after thanking him for allowing them to get past security, Sophia asks if he really did let his family go, unharmed. Makarov affirms that he did, and that he's not a monster. Just then, the trio are greeted by Samael and armed troops.
Sophia narrowly escapes from Samael with Makarov and Wraith when he directs them to an open rooftop. Following this, they set about rigging explosives at different areas around New Vision City. Afterwards, Sophia walks into the entrance of a building, when a guard tries to stop her, he is held at gunpoint by Makarov. He tells Wraith to lock the place down, while forcing the guard to open a door to a secret room where some Atlas officials are talking to one another. As they enter, Makarov tells the men to put their hands up, and then shoots the guard he was holding at gunpoint dead. The men surrender afterwards.
Sophia notes that if the place is as important as Makarov says it is, they are not putting up much of a fight to defend it. He replies saying that New Vision City is all the protection Atlas Corporation needs, while reminding her that they threaded a very tiny needle to get to where they are now: the building they're in is revealed to Atlas' digital archive, where every technological innovation, every strategy it has devised and every dirty secret is stored there in isolated servers; essentially they're in Atlas Corporation's "brain".
As the group continues setting charges around the place, Sophia notes they have company. Makarov is surprised that Atlas reacted so quickly, and wonders if he had misjudged them. Wraith asks if it's time to blow the place, but Makarov decides to put up a fight instead, to make Atlas believe they're desperate, though Sophia thinks they are desperate. Makarov pays no heed to her concern, and starts firing his grenade launcher while laughing maniacally.
After a while, Makarov decides it's time to go, and asks Wraith to set off the charges. As she does, multiple explosions go off in New Vision City. Afterwards, the trio make their way outside, with Makarov relishing in admiring the now burning landscape of the city. Sophia praises Makarov for his good work, but wonders what this has to do with finding Ghost. Makarov tells her that it is not time for that yet, as they are greeted by Spectre.
The trio open fire on Spectre, as he leaps to engage them. Spectre activates his Poltergeist ability, rendering himself invisible and knocks down both Makarov and Wraith, while Sophia watches in shock. Makarov directs Sophia to shoot a nearby hydrant, which she does, and it sprays water onto the surrounding area. After that, Makarov tells Wraith and Sophia to get into formation, while the water disables Spectre's Poltergeist ability.
With his invisibility gone, Spectre goes straight for Wraith, tackling her and throwing her into a nearby building. He then goes for Makarov, kicking away his weapon and slices off his right arm, before throwing him aside, knocking down Sophia as well. But before Spectre can finish them off, Wraith shoots him multiple times in the head, apparently killing him.
She later recovers, tending to an injured Makarov with Wraith, who has wrapped a tourniquet around his severed arm. She then asks them to follow her, having an idea. They load Makarov onto an ambulance, but as they do, a very bright light illuminates the background, forcing everyone to shield their eyes from it—revealed to have emanated from an orbital strike on Atlas’ Sky Carrier. Afterwards, they drive away from New Vision City.
The Atlas Ascension Part 1[]
Sophia is later present during Makarov’s airing of his grievances on his new arm. Makarov asks if she is there to watch him suffer, and she tells him that it has been six months; for six months she was told that Atlas’ archive had information on how to find Ghost, but so far, there’s nothing that had come to light. A furious Makarov reprimands her for leeching off other’s efforts and to she start working for herself.
Frustrated, Sophia returns to her dorm to rest. But as she enters the room, she finds Dame sitting on the bed, holding Templar’s mask. She tells Dame to put down the mask and get out, causing Dame to chide her for speaking that way to her “mother”, but Sophia derides her. She snatches away the mask as Dame tells her that she knows Sophia needs a strong parental figure to set things right for her; in her desperation for vengeance, she allied with Makarov, whom her father Édouard tried to kill, and also Dame herself. Dame tells her to learn how to give herself a ‘tracheotomy’, as it might just save her life. Sophia asks if Dame has a point because she’s as much her “mother” as Makarov is.
Dame says that she knows Sophia 'went back to the ice', and asks her where the 'body' was. Having had enough, Sophia demands her to leave, and if Dame were to come in her room again she'd gut her. Unfazed, Dame tells her that she will see Sophia again, and advises her to turn on the news. Sophia turns on the TV in her room, and is shocked to see a news report about Stitch having captured a chemical factory city belonging to Atlas Corporation, the self-proclaimed "Eagle of the Steppe" pledging "Western Purge" in Central Asia.
The Atlas Ascension Part 2[]
Sophia is later seen at a cafe, watching the news about vulnerable countries struggling against terrorist violence after the loss of Atlas Corporation’s support, and how the Sulyodansk chemical factory captured by Stitch is capable of producing seventeen metric tonnes of chemical warfare agents in a month. Just then, she is startled when Dame places her hand on her shoulder, and nearly attacks her.
Dame isn’t fazed however, and even remarks to being impressed that a little vodka hasn’t dulled Sophia’s reflexes. Sophia says she doesn’t what kind of game Dame is playing, and that she left her and Makarov for a reason. Dame says that she was concerned about her, as Sophia sped off on her motorcycle without saying goodbye. She then derides Sophia, asking if she’s there to sneak into Stitch’s army, to find the Templar and cry to him.
Sophia isn't fazed by her mocking, and scolds her, Makarov and her father for lying to her and dumping her with the Five Knights and passing her around like a pawn, thinking she wouldn't notice. She calls them all worthless and she's done with all of them. Dame, infuriated, tells her not walk away from her, and says that she is a pawn as she doesn't know anything and there are forces at work that she can't even begin to understand. Meanwhile, the barman asks them to pay for the drink and get out, but Dame pulls a gun on him to silence him.
Sophia says Dame isn't her mother and that she will find the man next to Stitch in the news, and if it's not her father, she will kill him. Dame asks what if that man is her father, and Sophia says that she will ask him why he abandoned her; if she doesn't like his answer, she will kill him too. Dame laughs, deriding Sophia for thinking she's a killer, and says that she doesn't have what it takes for 'this life'. As Sophia walks away, upset, Dame tells her that any idiot can tell her she's walking into a trap.
The Atlas Ascension Part 3[]
Later, Sophia goes to the Sulyodansk Industrial City to enlist in Stitch's Army, but is ridiculed by the men there for this. The recruiter tells Sophia that it's not the place for little girls, which frustrates her and prompting her to tell them she spent the last 2 years working for Makarov, and that she rode all the way from the Caucasus to be there. This however doesn't stop the men from making fun of her, and the recruiter says that it's very dangerous mentioning Makarov's name there, and tells Sophia to step aside as she's not what they're looking for. One of the henchmen continues to make fun of Sophia, saying Stitch's Army doesn't need any "babysitters".
In response to this, Sophia breaks the man's pinky finger and when he screams in pain, she mockingly tells him to "stop crying". The man vows to make her pay for that, but Wraith suddenly appears, chiding Sophia for trying to get herself killed and whisks her away. Sophia tells Wraith she has 5 seconds to tell her why she's following her and she will be gone. Wraith says that she knows why Sophia is there, and the man next to Stitch isn't her father, and that Edouard is dead and she needs to learn to accept that. Sophia replies that she went back to the ice in Alaska and all she found was his mask, but Wraith cuts her off, saying that even if she didn't find a body, it would most likely have been scavenged by the bears that live there--she tells Sophia to give up her attempt to join Stitch's army and come back to them, as Makarov will help her find Ghost as he promised.
However, Sophia reveals that she had already found Ghost, to Wraith's shock, and she explains that just like Makarov said, she found information on Ghost in the Atlas Corporation archive. Although he had hidden his identity pretty well, Atlas had kept tabs on him for years, so Sophia found out where he lived, and while she set up a vantage point from an adjacent building with a sniper rifle on the ready, she waited for him to appear.
However, Ghost had found Sophia first, and she realized that he knew why she was there and was expecting her. Instead of making her move, Sophia decided to back down and hear Ghost out. He apologized for abandoning her on the ice, and that if he were in place, he'd want payback too. But he told her something that hit hard: vengeance is a dead-end street that won't bring her any peace. On top of this, Ghost called himself a "weapon" used by others, and that if Sophia truly wanted to avenge her father's betrayal, she should find the one who wielded the weapon.
Sophia says that's why she's there; whoever the man next to Stitch is, is likely a shadow of her father, and this is connected to him somehow. Wraith decides to help Sophia, telling her to meet her at burnt out tank just outside of town in ten minutes, or she will be gone. Sophia agrees, but then the man whose pinky finger she broke earlier confronts her, telling her that they wouldn't hire him because of what she did, and vows to make her pay for that. However, Sophia swiftly lunges and slits the man's throat with her karambit, causing him to bleed out and die while she walks away.
The Atlas Ascension Part 4[]
Later, Sophia infiltrates Sulyodansk Industrial City with Wraith, chancing upon Stitch having a meeting with Templar's Shadow. Although Wraith wants to call Makarov so they can rob them blind, Sophia decides to make her move, to Wraith's chagrin. Interrupting the meeting, Sophia asks for explanations from Templar's Shadow, while Wraith holds them at gunpoint. Stitch notes that she is very much the Templar's daughter, and that he's almost disappointed at himself for crafting such an obvious trap. Sophia says she has always known it was a trap, and the only way to get her answers would be to walk right into it, and tells them she's tired of the games.
Stitch agrees, and Wraith drops her façade, turning her gun to point at Sophia's head, revealing she's working for Stitch, to Sophia's chagrin, Stitch reveals that he had always known where Sophia was and could have taken her at anytime, and there was nothing Makarov could have done to prevent it. At the same time, he also reveals that Sophia isn't their true target as she's just part of a larger plan.
Suddenly, the armed men who had entered the place are then quickly killed by throwing knives--revealed to have came from a man who reveals himself to be Templar, which shocks Sophia.
The Atlas Ascension Part 5[]
As the 2 Templars engage in a duel, Wraith advises her that they don't want to kill her, and they can give her the answers she seeks, but only if she joins them. Meanwhile, Stitch tells Sophia that they have prepared for this moment for a long time, and that there's nowhere left for her or her father to run, and to accept the inevitable.
Just then, Dame bursts into the compound driving a cargo truck, knocking down everybody including Sophia. As she recovers, she scolds Dame for almost killing her with the stunt she pulled, although Dame is unbothered. Wraith, injured, apologizes to Sophia for her actions, saying she had no choice and that she had always liked her. Having heard enough of her explanation, Sophia shoots Wraith dead. Dame compliments her for her kill, but Sophia angrily screams that Wraith was her friend, before demanding to know where her father is; she reunites with him shortly after, embracing him while saying she hates him.
The Atlas Ascension Part 6[]
However, Edouard suddenly draws a gun on Dame, who responds in kind. Sophia is flabbergasted by the act and scolds them for trying to kill each other in less than 10 seconds--in front of their daughter. But the pair instead shift their aim to Stitch's approaching men, and Sophia follows suit. Edouard and Dame continue their squabble--with Edouard telling Sophia that Dame handed her off to the enemy, while Dame retorts that Sophia had been safe with them when Edouard couldn't even save himself from getting shot. Frustrated, Sophia tells both of them to shut up and that they need to leave. Stitch taunts them, saying there are over ten thousand men in the city loyal to him and that they should surrender. Instead, the trio give him a sly look.
Sophia and her family tie Stitch to a cargo truck and begin driving out into the city. Stitch's men pursue them, while Dame holds them off. When one of the men attempt to jump at Edouard's seat, Sophia guns them down. Despite taking heavy fire, they manage to drive out of the city.
Later, Sophia is seen sitting in a forest with a campfire with Edouard and Dame, getting him up to speed about recent events. Edouard questions Sophia working for Makarov, and she insists she had no one as Nikto ditched her the moment they got back to Europe, and that she'd still be living on the street if Makarov hadn't found her and taken her in. Edouard mockingly wonders if Makarov promised to find Ghost for her, and hold him down so she could kill him. Sophia asserts that she was trying to avenge her father, but he tells her this was not the life he wanted for her, and she retorts that it was the life he left her when he pretended to be dead. Dame interjects, telling them to be quiet or they will bring Stitch's men right down on them.
Edouard knows that Sophia has been searching for answers, and decides it's time for her to know them; he proceeds to tell her about The Tontine: a fellowship of Five Knight Templars, holy warriors on a righteous crusade; but in truth they were little more than thugs who sought fortune in their holy land--using the wealth to buy their way into the halls of power--power which they used to crush the very order they belonged to and erased their own names from history; they became invisible, worming their way into every court, every church, extending their influence across the breadth of Christendom.
Sophia asks if their family was a part of the Tontine, and Edouard confirms: Gideon Couteaux was the mightiest of the Five Knights, their leader and thought by all to be the most devout; however, his fellow knights turned on him out of jealousy and fear, and so to protect his life and his line, Gideon fled the Tontine--and the Tontine has been hunting his descendants ever since, which are Edouard and Sophia.
Edouard asks if Sophia knows the meaning of the word "Tontine", and she agrees: an arrangement where a group of people sit on a prize that goes to the last one standing. She wonders what the "prize" is, and Dame answers that it's the world, they are competing to see who gets to rule it all.
However, before their conversation can continue, a grenade drops near them, forcing them to get clear. Flamewing has arrived to ambush them, and Sophia and Edouard are forced to fight her. After a skirmish, Sophia and Edouard manage to defeat Flamewing. Sophia wonders how Flamewing managed to find them, and Edouard guesses that it's a tracking chip implanted under the skin. Knowing this will not be the last assassin the Tontine will send for them, Edouard decides to take Sophia to a place in the French Alps to prepare--a place where their family has hidden for centuries; when Gideon Couteaux fled the Tontine, he took with him their greatest treasure and hid it away where they will never find it, and they will do everything in their power to get it back.
