The Haunting for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 was available between October 17th and November 6th, 2023 during Season Six of Modern Warfare II.[1]
Overview[]
The Haunting featured several new modes and content for both games. Several operators bundles were also released, including new Operators: Alucard, Lilith, Skeletor, Ash Williams and Inarius.
Multiplayer[]
Maps Update[]
A Haunting version of the map El Asilo and Embassy were available during the Haunting, replacing their standard version for the duration of the event.
El Asilo was themed around the Mexican Day of the Dead while Embassy was themed around a Zombie apocalypse taking over the area.
Modes[]
Within Multiplayer, five new game modes were available:
- Haunting Domination
- Haunting Kill Confirmed
- Haunting Grind
- Trick or Treat Drop Zone
- Zombies Infected
Warzone[]
Maps Update[]
A night-time and horror-themed version of both Al Mazrah and Vondel became available during the Haunting.
Also available in DMZ, the Al Mazrah map featured visual effects such as spirits and ghosts floating around the map or appearing on TV screens as well as a giant skull visible in the sky. Blood splatter and corpses can be found in various part of the map. The water in Al-Safwa Quarry also turned red. The water around the sunken ship east of Sawah Village was pushed out by the effect of the UFO creating a hole with massive walls of water surrounding the ship. The ruins near Oasis were updated with Ancient Egyptian statues, murals, and artifacts.
The night-time version of Vondel, named Vondead also featured horror-theme and spooky visual effects. All the water turned red, and the canal between City Hall and Central Station was drained.
Modes[]
- Main article: Zombie Royale
Two new modes was released in Warzone, the first being Zombie Royale available on both the night-time version of Al Mazrah and Vondead. The second is called Vondead Lockdown exclusive to Vondead.
In both modes, the player will encounter Bloodseeker Grenade, Haunted Boxes and occasional jump scares by opening Loot Crates.
Souls Rewards[]
Within both Multiplayer and Warzone modes, players can collect Souls to trade for rewards in the event menu. Souls can be obtained via the following methods:
- Killing a unique Player in any Multiplayer or Warzone mode drops 2 Souls (3 during the Boosted period). In Headquarters and Search and Destroy modes, the amount of Souls dropped per Player is doubled.
- Opening Common and Legendary Supply Boxes in any Warzone mode drops 1 Soul per box.
- Killing Agents in DMZ, as well as AI-controlled Zombies in any Warzone mode, has a chance to drop a Soul.
- Killing invisible Ghosts in any Warzone mode drops 1 Soul each.
18 rewards were available by redeeming the Souls, 12 of which went active on October 17th, 2023 and the other 6 were added on October 24th.
Between October 24th, 2023 and November 6th, 2023, the drop rate for Souls was "boosted" and the maximum Souls earning cap was increased for every mode. Between October 31st and November 1st, the earning cap was doubled when playing on Al Mazrah.

Soul Mastery[]
Once the player collects either 10, or 15 soul rewards, they will be able to earn the Mastery Rewards during the event.

Operation Nightmare[]
Operation Nightmare is a set a six challenges available in DMZ and Battle Royale taking place in the night version of Al Mazrah or Vondead. Every Monster respawns a few minutes after being killed, allowing multiple teams of players to eliminate them. Completing at least 5 challenges will reward the players with the "Bloody Mess" BAS-P Weapon Blueprint.
The Butcher[]
The Butcher can be found in the Hell dimension accessed through Nightmare Portals on various altars found around Al Mazrah and Vondead, attacking operators and summoning zombies. When eliminated, the Butcher will drop Souls, Killstreaks, and 3-Plate carriers.
Swamp Creature[]
The Swamp Creature can be found in the Mawizeh Marshlands in Al Mazrah. At least one Swamp Creature can be found in the water. Offering the Golden Tiara will spawn 3 more Swamp Creatures, when the last Swamp Creature is eliminated it will drop Equipment, Souls and the Prized Golden Tiara.
The Pharaoh[]
The Pharaoh can be found inside a sarcophagus in the Excavation area near Oasis in Al Mazrah guarded by several possessed Al-Qatala soldiers. Upon inserting 10 Cursed Skulls into the sarcophagus, it will open and the Pharaoh will come out. When eliminated, the Pharaoh will drop Field Upgrades and the Haunted Box if killed in Battle Royale.
The UFO[]
The UFO can be found over the sunken ship off the coast of Sawah Village in Al Mazrah. It will spawn after destroying the three anomalies that come out of the blue energy ball. When eliminated, the UFO will drop a sphere, which can be brought to a portal on the sunken ship. Doing so will reward the players with several 3-Plate carriers, Field Upgrades and Self Revive Kits.
The Ghost Train[]
The Ghost Train replaces the Passenger Train traveling around Al Mazrah. The train cars leading to the locomotive are trapped with several Claymores, Proximity Mines and Inflatable Decoys. Several Supply Boxes and Crates can be found inside the locomotive, as well as a safe located at the foot of a statue. The Heart of the Train can be retrieved from the statue's hands.
Evil Spirits[]
Evil Spirits can be found around Al Mazrah, appearing as jumpscares when looting Supply Boxes and Crates. The Ghoul can be found in Al Mazrah City, the Witch in Al Malik Airport, the Specter in Al Bagra Fortress, and the Reaper in Al-Safwa Quarry.
Easter Eggs[]
Several Easter Eggs could be completed while playing on Vondead.
Witch's Book[]
In the far left side of the Graveyard, there was a mausoleum which featured a book laying on top of an altar. Interacting with the book would light up the interior with bright green light. The player would then need to enter the windmill next to the Stadium. The windmill would light up while being surrounded by a bright green star. The interior would also light up shortly after the player entered.
Inside the windmill, the "Witch's Stick" SO-14 Blueprint would appear floating above the ground. The player could collect the blueprint allowing them and every player in their team to unlock the blueprint permanently.
Chess Board[]
Near the Museum, there was a large-scale chess board missing a Black Knight piece. The chess piece could be found in four different locations in the garden and parts of the Museum. Once the piece was found, the player would need to aim-down-sight to active it. The piece was activated when its eyes became bright red. The player would guide the piece back to the chess board, however the piece would move only if the player, or any member in their team, didn't look at it. However, if the piece moved too fast and touched the player, it would stun them before teleporting back to its original place.
Once the Black Knight was put back into its place on the chess board, the center part of the board would light up and rewarded the player with loot such as Cash, Bloodseeker Grenade, and Haunted Box. Completing that Easter Egg also rewarded the player with the "Checkmate" Weapon Charm.
Daily Login Rewards[]
There were a set of 10 Daily Login Rewards that can be claimed over the span of the event.

- When spawning in the night version of Al Mazrah, the date is Day 666, 3:01 while in Vondead the date is Day 666, 23:58. The "Day 666" is a reference of Number of the beast.
- The Monsters can perform Finishing Moves on players.
- When destroyed, the UFO will also drop an alien corpse item named "Ultra Secreto", and worth $100,000. This item is a reference to alleged alien corpses shown to the Mexican Congress in September 2023.[2]
