Thrashers (referred to as "mutated zombie" in-game via Trials of the Ancients, Thrashers by the characters) are large, heavily mutated enemies that appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops III on the Zombies map Zetsubou No Shima. They are the results of experiments by Division 9, in an attempt to create a new breed of soldiers to deploy to the front lines.

Thrashers are formidable foes in any situation. They are able to emit toxic spores that cause the player cough and to not be able to sprint or fire weapons for several seconds. They also have a very powerful melee attack, which can down the player in one hit without Juggernog, and two with (brings the player to red instantly from full health in one hit, often downing if the player was already scratched). When injured, they enter an "enraged" state where they glow red and have increased aggression, running much faster. They also possess an ability to dig underground and pop up next to players if no one is close enough to them.

Although they mutate from normal zombies, they are equivalent to Margwas and Panzersoldats. As such, Thrashers are immune to Nuke and Insta-Kill.

Thrashers will additionally devour nearby zombies to regenerate if injured, regaining the spores on their bodies. They will also devour any downed players in their path in co-op. The Thrasher must be killed to free the downed player to revive them. This specific mechanic is required to earn the achievement, In Belly of the Beast. Thrashers will not devour players when playing solo.

Thrashers can only be killed by shooting and popping the spores on its body. There are several methods available to deal with the threat they pose effectively:

  • Thrashers primarily spawn when a fully grown fungal spore (identified by a distinct darker orange base where it is attached to the wall, and a prominent smoky aura) comes into contact with a nearby zombie, causing it to mutate into a Thrasher. It is highly advised to keep the wall spores at bay by shooting them every now and then before they reach this stage, to decrease the amount of Thrashers ever appearing. Thrashers will still spawn naturally as rounds progress, so be prepared to deal with them despite preventative measures.
  • The buildable Gas Mask is very important, as it protects against the spore clouds created by wall spores the player will be shooting at, and the ones created by Thrashers themselves. While the Gas Mask doesn't deal damage, it is excellent protection against an otherwise hazardous situation where sprinting and firing weapons are temporarily disabled due to coughing from their spores.
  • The KT-4 is very potent against Thrashers, as a fully charged shot is capable of killing them outright after a few seconds of them flailing.
  • The Skull of Nan Sapwe Vaporize attack will kill Thrashers very quickly, albeit slightly slower than normal zombies. This is most useful if one has a Trial requiring the player to kill one without it becoming enraged, which is not possible with the KT-4.

A Thrasher will always spawn when opening the Bunker unless the zombie mutating is killed immediately. Thrashers are also quite likely to spawn while "cleansing" the third and fourth skulls in order to obtain the Skull of Nan Sapwe. Thrasher heads can be shot off, but they will still keep full combat capability. Doing these specific headshots is another possible task for the Trials of the Ancients.

It is possible to spawn a friendly Thrasher that will attack zombies instead of players, by infecting a zombie using a specific hidden spore in the map. It is located on a wall to the left of the entrance of the test subjects room in the bunker. In order to reveal it, the player must use the Skull of Nan Sapwe's Mesmerize attack on the wall. After doing so, the player will be able to see the spore behind some branches, but will still be unable to shoot the spore. To remove the branches, the player must shoot them with the upgraded KT-4, the Masamune. In the Easter Egg, it is revealed that the Original Timeline Takeo has mutated into a Thrasher while held captive in his cell, and he must be battled to reverse the mutation and be cured.

Appearance[]

The Thrasher is a heavily mutated zombie with spores all over its body. It has a mutated arm and some branches on its other arm. It is grown out of the ground, as its body has a substantial amount of moss and roots on it. They possess a second "mouth" on their torso that they use to devour other Zombies or downed players in co-op. When spawning, Several roots spawn out of the ground, and encase the zombie, bringing it below ground, and it soon emerges as a Thrasher. After it is killed, the cloud from the spores linger for around 10 seconds, making it a possibility for another Thrasher to spawn if other Zombies walk into it. causing a domino effect if not careful. Additionally, more than one Thrasher may spawn at a time, similar to the Panzersoldat in Origins and Der Eisendrache.
