The Type 97 ShinHōtō Chi-Ha is a medium tank used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II and featured in Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts. The standard Type 97 Chi-Ha appears in the game files of world at War but is unused.

Call of Duty: World at War[]

These Tanks can be found in the levels "Little Resistance" and "Hard Landing". In "Little Resistance", the player uses artillery strikes to destroy them or the Ray Gun if Miller has it. In "Hard Landing", the player fights them face to face when they reach the airfield with the M9A1 Bazooka, Marines, Rifle Grenades, M4 Sherman tanks and the Triple 25. They fight three more tanks when the player captures the airfield in a counterattack battle.

Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts[]

The Type 97 ShinHoTo returns in Final Fronts as the Type 3 Chi-Nu tank and can found in "Betio Airfield", "Codename: Forager" and "Typhoon of Steel". At Betio, a tank attacks Miller and the Marines outside the radio station but is destroyed by a F4U Corsair. Serval destroyed tanks can be found outside the Japanese HQ. When Miller takes the HQ, three tanks counterattacks with the support of Banzai Chargers. They are all destroyed by Miller using a Bazooka and some more planes preforming bombing runs. On Saipan, a few destroyed Japanese tanks are found at the end of the level and two working tanks help support the Japanese counterattack but are again destroyed by Miller using a Bazooka. On Okinawa, a destroyed tank can be found at the start of Typhoon of Steel and another destroyed one is found at the bottom of the stairs near the end of the level.

Health[]

The Tank can take two shots from a M9A1 Bazooka in both games. It can take around five shots from Rifle Grenades in World at War. It can also be destroyed by the Triple 25 anti aircraft gun in "Hard landing". A ShinHoTo tank in Solo/Co-op can be destroyed by M4 Sherman tanks, rocket strikes and F4U corsairs in a single hit. The Ray gun only needs a few hits to destroy a tank.

Trivia[]

  • The Type 97 was originally planned to appear in World at War multiplayer mode[1] equipped with an MG42 mounted machine gun. It would have appeared at least on the cut map Beachhead.
  • The Type 97s in "Hard Landing" have ghillie suit-like camouflage on them, however in "Little Resistance" and all of Final Fronts, the tanks are khaki coloured.
  • The tank was referred as a Type 95 Ha-Go in "Little Resistance".[source needed]
  • These tanks can be destroyed using the Ray Gun found in "Little Resistance".
  • In World at War, these tanks would have likely appeared in the cut multiplayer game modes Tank War and Survival.
  • In World at War Final Fronts, when the tank is hit once by a Bazooka, the player can see white smoke coming out of the engine.
  • In World at War Final Fronts, when the turret is destroyed, it glitches into the base of the tank and if the turret was moving while getting destroyed you can still hear it move despite it not moving.
