The subject of this article appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Vorkuta is a prison in the town of Vorkuta in Russia. It is featured in the level Vorkuta in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

History

1945

Viktor Reznov under the command of Nikita Dragovich was sent to Vorkuta after Dragovich betrayed him on a mission to find a weapon called Nova 6. Reznov was forced to watch Dragovich use the gas to kill his closest friend Dimitri Petrenko. Reznov destroyed the Nova 6 shipment but was captured and sent to Vorkuta for killing fellow Russians. Reznov would spend the next 18 years there.

1961

in 1961 a CIA operative named Alex Mason was assigned to kill Castro but was forced to stay behind to ensure Woods, Bowman and Carlos' survival and is captured by Lev Kravchenko and a Cuban solider. Mason then discovers that Castro was still alive. The real Castro handed Mason over to Dragovich where he would put Mason in Vorkuta for the next 2 years

Between 1961 and 1963

Between this time Mason befriended Reznov. Mason was experimented on by Dragovich's Nazi scientist Steiner, they would attempt to program him to kill US president John F. Kennedy. However, Mason had a resistance to their programing. But Reznov as Mason's friend was able to reprogram him to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner. Reznov also told Mason the story of Dragovich's betrayal and the death of Dimitri Petrenko in 1945.

1963

In 1963 Mason and Reznov came up with a plan to escape Vorkuta. They made eight steps to this operation:

  1. Secure the keys.
  2. Ascend from darkness.
  3. Rain fire.
  4. Unleash the horde.
  5. Skewer the winged beast.
  6. Wield a fist of iron.
  7. Raise Hell.
  8. Freedom.

They also had the assistance of Sergei Kozin. But Sergei gave his life to help Mason get to the controls to open the main door's. Mason then grabbed a minigun and they pushed through Vorkuta. But tear gas stopped them. Everyone else was killed but Reznov and Mason got out on bike's. They then hijacked a truck and found a train. Mason jumped to it and made it. Mason then told Reznov to do the same, but Reznov told him that freedom was not for him and lead the pursuing truck's away from him. Reznov was soon killed after.

1968

Agent's Hudson and Weaver later discovered that Mason had been brainwashed in Vorkuta as Mason went to Rebirth Island to kill Steiner against order's. Though Mason believed Reznov killed him but Hudson later told Mason that he was brainwashed and Reznov was in his head. And that Mason was meant to kill Kennedy but Reznov changed his programing.

Trivia

  • It's possible that Nevski of Reznov's squad is the Vorkuta Prisoner because they sound and look very similar.
  • This level was most likely an allusion to the actual Vorkuta Uprising, which in real life occurred in July 1953. The camp was closed in 1962, whereas the events in-game occurred a year after. However, due to Reznov mentioning in his speech that the mines were owned by Dragovich, it may be possible that the property of Vorkuta was secretly bought and re-opened by Dragovich and Kravchenko shortly after its officially-stated closure.
