Yuri Zavoyski (Russian: Юрий Завойский) is a character mentioned and heard in the Dark Aether story of Treyarch's Zombies mode. He is mentioned in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in intel on the map Firebase Z, and is heard in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 through an audio log for the map Ashes of the Damned.
Biography[]
Yuri Zavoyski was a Soviet scientist that worked on the concept of a weapon known as the Generator Khaosa Zavoyski-45 during World War II, but whose efforts never came to fruition. Many years later, in 1968, Yuri worked in collaboration with Anton Gersh in the development of Project Thunder - a space program that encompassed the assembly and successful launch of a Soviet rocket - at the Zarya Cosmodrome.
One day, at the request of Gersh, Yuri was doing inventory and describing a mysterious book he had found amongst the research materials when he began hearing the voice of the Warden. Though initially surprised and wary of him, Yuri was manipulated by the Warden's words of appeasement to pursue his own vision and to sabotage the launch of the Project Thunder's rocket - Project of which Gersh was spearheading.
After having heard the voice of the Warden, Yuri became progressively more insane, secluding himself from his colleagues, losing a lot of weight, and appearing "twisted and cold". On the day of the sabotage, a cosmonaut named Egorov[1] noted that Yuri had "real madness in his eyes" and that "something or someone took hold of him". The sabotage he enacted on the rocket made it so that the entire Cosmodrome would be transported into the Dark Aether, and everyone who was working inside the Cosmodrome would ultimately be killed by Dark Aether creatures.
His whereabouts after this event are unknown, though a burned ID of him could be seen attached to an unknown person's scrapbook page.
Legacy[]
At some point, the Dark Aether and Ex-Requiem crews visited the Cosmodrome and used Yuri's lab to concoct a potion that would let them be able to hear the Entity's voice clearly. They then proceeded to use the controls in the comms room to launch the rocket that was still stationed there, thus releasing all of the lost souls from the Cosmodrome.
Trivia[]
- The act of Yuri becoming insane after having picked up a diary and having heard the voice of the Warden is mirrored by his Aether Saga counterpart, as the Yuri in that timeline had also began hearing a voice when he picked up and started to read through a diary.
- According to a voice line from Nikolai Belinski, it his hinted that he and Yuri are from the same universe ("So. Rumors that Zarya Cosmodrome vanished were true...").
